“Be The Match in 2010”
Sustaining The Movement To Increase African American
Blood & Marrow Donors
2. The Facts
Blood & bone marrow matches are much more
likely to be found within the same ethnic group.
African Americans comprise only 2.7% of bone
marrow registrants nationally and 2.3% of blood
donors in the greater Sacramento region.
African Americans represent 8% of the total
population in the Sacramento region; 11%
nationally.
Therefore, African Americans in need of marrow
matches are at a disadvantage when compared to
Caucasian and Latino patients in California and
the nation as a whole.

BloodSource and Runyon Saltzman & Einhorn,
Inc (RS&E) in November 2009 to design and
execute a localized African American Outreach

achieving sustained results.

Targeting African Americans
6. The Barriers
Fear and a lack of understanding of the registry and
blood donation process.
A general mistrust of the medical community.
TUSKEGEE SYPHILLIS EXPERIMENT
Between 1932 – 1972 by U.S. Public Health Service
An experiment on 399 black men, all in the late stages of
syphilis.
Known cure found in 1947 but the U.S. STILL permitted the
experiment in order to see the effects in blacks.
RESULTS: 28 died from syphilis; 100 dying from related
complications; 40 of the wives became infected; and 19
