After analysing film openings from Supernatural
Horror movies it has strengthened my knowledge
and understanding , which will help and support
me when I produce my clip in the Horror genre.
Identifying different elements , such as:
Sound
Stock Characters
Typography
Key Narrative
Iconographies
Key Characters


Score and incidental music is a key element
to producing the genre movie, making the
film more thrilling and tense to watch
It also helps create suspense, which is vital in
any opening scene, as it entices the audience
and encourages them to continue watching.
As well as helping to create the right
mood/atmosphere

The main stock characters for this genre, are
ether protagonist attempting to rescue or
save the victim/s or protagonists which are
ether overpowered or in danger of a
supernatural occurrence.
Mise en scene helps establish the characters,
through the use of costume and makeup,
often representing the characters as
normal/ordinary to add a realist element to
the film.

Title sequences and credits are used ,
drawing the audience toward the words,
adding more tension, alongside promoting
the subjects who produced, distributed and
foundered the film.
Sound plays alongside the titles, as well as
transitions and animation, which adds
interest and draws in the audience. All in
which helping to enforce the Horror genre,
using colour such as red and dark back
grounds to link to the connotations.

The main narrative of this genre involves a
supernatural occurrence/being, such as a
ghost. Which is usually the antagonist,
harming and placing other stock characters,
such as the protagonist, in danger.
The film’s protagonist usually helps a victim
or investigates into the supernatural being,
even leading to rescuing others in some
cases.

7. Certain icons are used to help the audience
establish the genre of the film, such as;
 Weapons- knifes, guns etc.
 Blood
 Supernatural occurrences
Icons, such as the location also help establish the
genre of the film, for example the woodlands is
conventionally associated with Horror.
Aswell as the lighting, as I identified conventional
Horror movies have low key lighting, with dark
filters.

The key characters in a Supernatural Horror,
or any Horror for that matter, are the
antagonist and protagonist.
With the antagonist usually being a
supernatural being or danger to the
protagonist
The protagonist being innocent, vulnerable
and a victim to the antagonist.
However in some cases the protagonist may
be confidant, fearless and investigating the
occurrence.
