Mold Testing Kits - Determine The Type And Level Of Mold
Exposure
Molds are a common view at homes that are
situated in locations that receive rains
throughout the year. Hence to remove mold,
all what is required is an onsite inspection.
There are few merits of performing such an
activity. Some of the advantages include
finding out hidden molds in places like
closets, cabinets, cavities and furniture. With
the help of an onsite microscope the surface
susceptible to molds can be easily tested.
Remediation recommendations can be tailor made according to situations. In figuring out damp
areas, a moisture meter can be used. For receiving an air sample people think of purchasing
mold testing kits. The kits are known as settle plates or gravity plate tests. The gravity plate is a
petri dish having a nutrient base. When the petri dish top is removed the spores that float settle
inside the plate and start to grow on the gel at the bottom. After some days the mold becomes
visible and can be identified. This particular kit is not known for its accuracy since it is unable to
figure out light spores that are unable to settle down for at least four to eight hours. If the petri dish
is exposed for one hour then spores like Aspergillus and Penicillium may not be counted.
Also the aforesaid test kit may not work for testing Stachybotrys for some reasons.
Stachybotrys spores are sticky and they do not become airborne like other spores. These kinds
are not easily tested. They require glossy and sticky tape to be touched on the surface that is
suspected of having molds and thereby sending the tape to a testing service for examination
through a microscope.
Tape testing can be done on any suspected surface without mold being visible. The surface that
is getting tested may be clean in actuality but may be consisting of molds in the surface. The
mold resembles grapes in appearance and is a common mold spore. There are varied
laboratories and even home mold inspections by professionals who test the surface and
provide information relating to mold being present on the suspected surface.
