2. • Inputs
• Land: I need an office building as well as a place to do printing
and publishing
• Labor: Writers, Artists, reviewers, editors, and maintenance
workers for machines.
• Capital: Money to start business, rent space, and hire workers.
I will create the premier Atlanta
Comic book publishing company
3. More than “marvel”ous, They’re
Stupendous!
This business will be a corporation. The decision is based on the
ease in raising capital that corporations bring. I will sell stock in the
company to get the initial investment to start the business.
4. Hypothetical location
• A possible location for my business would be this
office building in Atlanta. It has a large studio for the
printers, and rooms for office space.
• It is 6,750 square feet and costs 1,400,000$ to
purchase.
5. Resources
Item number Cost (est.)
Printer 2 20,000
Editor 3 225,000 per year
Artist 10 500,000 per year
Writer 5 250,000 per year
Printer supplies (ink etc.) 1 year supply 10,000
Total 1,005,000
Capital for this initial investment will be paid for by selling
company stock
6. Licensing
• I need to apply for a business license and
register with the city
• The building will also need to be insured.
• New intellectual properties such as characters
and story lines need to be copyrighted.
• Contracts need to be written for writers and
artists regarding company ownership of their
creations
7. Demographics
• Like other smaller, independent comics publishers I
would focus less on the traditional “children”
demographic and more on the “Urban Young Adult”
market of men and women around 18-30 years of age.
• Atlanta is a great place to have such a business as we
have several yearly conventions for this group such as
“Dragoncon” and “AWA” (Anime Weekend Atlanta).
8. Market Structure
• The Comic book industry is mainly a oligopoly; it is dominated
by two companies, DC and Marvel. However, this is not to say
that smaller independent companies, like mine, cannot
become part of the industry.
• Companies like “Image” and “Dark Horse” have entered the
market and have, especially in recent years, achieved a large
level of notoriety.
• Like these smaller companies I would play to niche consumers
who want more specialized stories that cannot be found in
the works of the industry giants
