Editor's Notes
In my presentation today I will be discussing obesity among children today.
So you may be wondering why is this topic so important. Due to a person being overweight there are a lot of things that can happen to a person whom is obese. If you are obese you can die because you are very unhealthy and overweight. You can also get diabetes or other things.
On the American Academy of child and adolescent psychiatry website they believe that genetics, biological and cultural actors are the cause of obesity. If one parent is obese there is a 50% chance that the child will be too. But if both parents are obese there is a 80% of the child becoming an obese adult. Some children become obese because they have low self-esteem, don’t exercise or eat unhealthy foods.
On the American Academy of child and adolescent psychiatry website they say that obesity is excessive amount of body fat. When a child weight is 10% or more higher than what is recommended for their height and body type.
On the centers for disease control and prevention website they have put together data from 2005 and 2006 about people whom are overweight. As you can see as you get older there are more and more people becoming overweight. Being overweight can start off when you’re a child and may only get worst as you become an adult. On 2005 and 2006 there were 11% children who were between the age of 2 to 5 who are overweight. And 15% of children between the ages of 6 to 11 who are overweight.
Parents should feed their children a little more healthy. They should not feed children as much fattening foods and should give them more fruits. Deborah Kotz wrote “It’s never too early to be heart smart” said that parents should feed children reduced-fat milk, set meal times, and let children play outside for an hour instead of letting them sit at the television for a long time.
A child who is obese will tend to miss more days in school because of students who are bullying them because of their weight. Students become shy and depressed. They may not do there homework, causing low grades or not that very interested in school or playtime.
Schools have so much healthy foods in it that motivates students to eat anything that want. Schools have vending machines that have snacks and soda that children can eat. Not to mention teachers who give students candy in class for doing their work.
In schools there should be less junk foods in the vending machines. There also should be less soda and more orange juice or healthy snacks in the vending machines. Teachers should inform students more about the risk of being obese.
If the rate of obesity continues there will me more obese children in the future, more studies on obese children. There will also be more reasons why obesity is ocuring and more ways to try to stay healthy.
So remember being obese is not a fun thing. You can die from obesity and have trouble breathing. You should eat more healthy foods, fruits, and vegetables. You should drink water and milk. And exercise or even play outdoors at least an hour each day. Since you know about obesity you should inform more people about it.
