3. BigData is more than just using statistical analysis on large databases of
information. It’s an evolution in the way data-driven decisions are made.
“But we
don’t use
data to drive
decisions!”
“But we
don’t even
have SMALL
data!”

“Even if we
had it, what
would we do
with it?”
• Do your teams make decisions without analysing
the situation?
‒ In one study1 organisations with an analytical
orientation tended to have higher performance
than those that didn’t
‒ This is the difference between “we know it” vs.
“we think it”
‒ Robust decision making process = The mark of
a good professional.
• You don’t have a systematic process to capture
data relevant to your strategy?
‒ Time to develop a data management strategy?
• Do you feel that BigData wouldn’t impact your
business?
‒ BigData is one of those disruptive technologies
of our generation.
‒ Visualization technology is key for adopters of
BigData.

5. One interesting trend is the use of personal health monitoring apps.
Imagine if health providers could mine this information to deliver better
and more customised (patient-centric / citizen-centric) services

qualified to talk about BigData to you guys

BUSINESS SCHOOL
I am championing two MBA projects (assessed
coursework) that involve BigData.
I was trained in the use of BigData analytical techniques,
and used these in live projects.
I qualified as a Chartered Accountant – we are known for
our quantitative skills, professionalism and expertise.
I worked in Brunei’s IT industry for 3 years – so I
appreciate the environment

8. The 5 stages of analytical competition show how an
organisation grows into a best practice analytical organisation
5 – Analytical competitors
4 - Analytical companies
3 – Analytical inspirations
2 – Localized analytics
1 – Analytically impaired
• 1 Analytically impaired
‒ “What just happened?”
• 2 Localized analytics
‒ Not cohesive. Not integrated.
‒ “How can we improve the business?”
• 3 Analytical inspirations
‒ Begin efforts for integrated analytics
‒ “How can we extrapolate existing trends?”
• 4 Analytical companies
‒ Enterprise wide perspective
‒ “How can we use analytics to innovate?”
• 5 Analytical competitors
‒ Big results, sustainable advantage
‒ “How do we stay ahead?”

9. So where are we in terms of this framework?
I think a lot of local businesses may find themselves here in Stage 2.
5 – Analytical competitors

11. BigData demonstration using Tableau and a public data set
Data sets
Tableau
• 68m rows (natality)
• 164k rows (shakespeare)
• FYI Excel can access a
maximum of 1m rows
• One of my consulting
projects involved a dataset
of ~1m rows. It took us > 1
1 minute to build a report.
11
Google BigQuery
• Infrastructure as a Service
(IaaS)
• A tool to analyse billions of
rows in a highly scalable
fashion
• One of the most disruptive
Google technologies
• Leading provider of data
visualization tools
• Freely available version
“Tableau Public” can
analyse up to 1m rows.

12. To adopt BigData practices, start with the Strategy! Then align
infrastructure & human resources to the Strategy.
HR
Infra
Strategy
12
BigData presented by @izamryan
• Strategy – what is the core capability of your
organisation?
‒ Maximising profit per customer through
selling a portfolio of services
‒ Selecting, training and developing the next
generation of leaders
• Infrastructure – do you have systems and
processes in place to support the strategy?
‒ Do you track customer interactions?
‒ Which are your most profitable
customers? Least profitable? Why aren’t
they profitable?
• Human resources – are teams ready for a
data-driven decision making process?
‒ Do we have senior leadership’s support?

13. In Conclusion – I hope you have seen a little bit
of how big a game change BigQuery can be.
•
We should align
our strategy with
our infra & HR
We should
adopt a datadriven approach
to decision
making
•
Being able to
manage
BigData will
gain us an
advantage
