Read the following passage and mark the letter A , B, C or D on your answer sheet to indicate the
correct word for each of the blanks from 61 to 65 .
Different regions have different rates of population growth, but in the 20 th century, the world saw
the biggest increase in its population in human history due to medical advances and massive increase
in agricultural productivity made by the Green Revolution.
In 2000, the United Nations estimated that the world’s population was then growing at the rate of
1.14% or about 75 million people per year. According to data from the CIA’s 2005 - 2006 World Fact
books, the world human population currently increases by 203,800 people every day. The 2007 CIA
Fact Book increased this to 211,090 people every day. Globally, the population growth rate has been
steadily declining from its peak of 2.19% in 1963, but growth remains high in the Middle East and
Sub - Saharan Africa. In some countries there is negative population growth, especially in Central and
Eastern Europe (mainly due to fertility rates) and Southern Africa (due to the high number of HIV related deaths). Within the next decade, Japan and some countries in Western Europe also are
expected to encounter negative population growth due to sub - replacement fertility rates. Population
growth which exceeds the carrying capacity of an area or environment results in overpopulation.
Conversely, such areas may be considered under - populated if the population is not large enough to
maintain an economic system.

A. massive increase in agricultural productivity B. medical advances
C. Both A and B
D. the Green Revolution

D. 203,800 people every day
63: Negative population growth in Central Europe is mainly due to …………….
A. low fertility rates
B. low mortality rates
Page 4/6 - Code 182
C. high fertility rates
D. the high number of HIV - related deaths
64: The word peak is closest meaning to………………………………………
A. number
B. average
C. smallest
D. highest
65: Which of the following sentences is NOT true?
A. In 1963, the world’s population grew at the rate of 2.19%.
B. The Middle East has the lowest rate of population growth.
C. In 2000, it was estimated that there were about 75 million people every year.

correct answer to each of the sentence from 66 to 75 .
Harvard University, today recognized as part of the top echelon of the world’s universities,
came from very inauspicious and humble beginnings. This oldest of American universities was
founded in 1636, just sixteen years after the Pilgrims landed at Plymouth. Included in the Puritan
emigrants to the Massachusetts colony during this period were more than 100 graduates of England’s
prestigious Oxford and Cambridge universities, and these university graduates in the New World
were determined that their sons would have the same educational opportunities that they* themselves
had had. Because of this support in the colony for an institution of higher learning, the General Court
of Massachusetts appropriated 400 pounds* for a college in October of 1636 and early the following
year decided on a parcel of land for the school; this land was in an area called Newtown, which was
later renamed Cambridge after its English cousin* and is the site of the present - day university.
When a young minister named John Harvard, who came from the neighboring town of
Charlestown, died from tuberculosis in 1638, he willed half of his estate of 1,700 pounds to the
fledgling* college. In spite of the fact that only half of the bequest was actually paid, the General
Court named the college after the minister in appreciation for what he had done. The amount of the
bequest many not have been large, particularly by today’s standards, but it was more than the General
Court had found it necessary to appropriate in order to open the college.
Henry Duster was appointed the first president of Harvard in 1640, and it should be noted that in
addition to serving as president, he was also the entire faculty, with an entering freshman class of four
students. Although the staff did expand somewhat*, for the first century of its existence the entire
teaching staff consisted of the president and three or four tutors.

correct word for each of the blanks from 76 to 80 .
Probably the most important factor governing the severity of forest fires is weather. Hot, dry
weather lowers the moisture content of fuels. Once a fire has started, wind is extremely critical
because it influences the oxygen supply and the rate of spread. Forest type and forest conditions are
also important factors. For example, fire is more likely to occur in conifers than in hardwoods; slashcovered or brushy areas are especially hazardous because the rate at which combustion consumes fuel
is proportional to fuel volume and surface area.
Some fires are caused by lightning; others are caused by people. Those caused by people may be
accidental or intentional (incendiary). The causes of fire in the United States show large regional
differences. In the Rocky Mountains more than 70 percent of the fires are caused by lightning,
whereas incendiary fires amount to only about 1 percent. In contrast, more than 40 percent of the fires
in the South are incendiary, whereas lightning causes only 1 percent.

D. An analysis of factors related to forest fires is followed by an argument against the causes of

Different regions have different rates of population growth, but in the 20 th century, the world saw the biggest increase in its population in human history due to medical advances and massive increase in agricultural productivity made by the Green Revolution. In 2000, the United Nations estimated that the world’s population was then growing at the rate of 1.14% or about 75 million people per year. According to data from the CIA’s 2005 - 2006 World Fact books, the world human population currently increases by 203,800 people every day. The 2007 CIA Fact Book increased this to 211,090 people every day. Globally, the population growth rate has been steadily declining from its peak of 2.19% in 1963, but growth remains high in the Middle East and Sub - Saharan Africa. In some countries there is negative population growth, especially in Central and Eastern Europe (mainly due to fertility rates) and Southern Africa (due to the high number of HIV related deaths). Within the next decade, Japan and some countries in Western Europe also are expected to encounter negative population growth due to sub - replacement fertility rates. Population growth which exceeds the carrying capacity of an area or environment results in overpopulation. Conversely, such areas may be considered under - populated if the population is not large enough to maintain an economic system. 61: The world’s population increased the most in the 20th century because of…... A. In 1963, the world’s population grew at the rate of 2.19%. B. The Middle East has the lowest rate of population growth. C. Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B , C or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct answer to each of the sentence from 66 to 75 . Harvard University, today recognized as part of the top echelon of the world’s universities, came from very inauspicious and humble beginnings. This oldest of American universities was founded in 1636, just sixteen years after the Pilgrims landed at Plymouth. Included in the Puritan emigrants to the Massachusetts colony during this period were more than 100 graduates of England’s prestigious Oxford and Cambridge universities, and these university graduates in the New World were determined that their sons would have the same educational opportunities that they* themselves had had. Because of this support in the colony for an institution of higher learning, the General Court of Massachusetts appropriated 400 pounds* for a college in October of 1636 and early the following year decided on a parcel of land for the school; this land was in an area called Newtown, which was later renamed Cambridge after its English cousin* and is the site of the present - day university. When a young minister named John Harvard, who came from the neighboring town of Charlestown, died from tuberculosis in 1638, he willed half of his estate of 1,700 pounds to the fledgling* college. In spite of the fact that only half of the bequest was actually paid, the General Court named the college after the minister in appreciation for what he had done. The amount of the bequest many not have been large, particularly by today’s standards, but it was more than the General Court had found it necessary to appropriate in order to open the college. Henry Duster was appointed the first president of Harvard in 1640, and it should be noted that in addition to serving as president, he was also the entire faculty, with an entering freshman class of four students. Although the staff did expand somewhat*, for the first century of its existence the entire teaching staff consisted of the president and three or four tutors. 66: The main idea of this passage is that A. What is today a great university started out small B. Harvard University developed under the auspices of the General Court of Massachusetts C.
