2. ESSENCE Within ”Hapoel Katamon's” "Neighborhoods League" project, several football teams are being developed in various schools and neighborhoods in Jerusalem, mostly in areas where there aren't any active sports teams or other after-school activities. Although the project is an organized after school activity, it requests a minor amount of money from the child involved.
3. According to the main plan, the children, who are in the fifth and sixth grade, are entitled to two football trainings or one training and a tournament (Match days) each week.
4. Educational program Additionally, once a week a student from the “Hebrew university” comes to assist the program's children with their homework assignments and engages them in a social-educational activity. This part of the project is completely monitored and under the schools supervision.
5. Educational concept As the initiators of the project, we are aware of the difficulty of trying to create an interesting educational frame for children in these ages. Additionally, these children are mostly not interested in learning nor they receive the support and the help they are needed from their parents. As students, we are also aware of the importance of basic education and learning abilities in a young age in order to gain an ability to develop in the future. All of the children in the project are committed for an appropriate behavior and satisfying overall appearance as a condition for their participation in the project's football activities. In order to maintain this agreement, a constant connection is kept between the coach, the teachers, the team's tutor and also with the schools principals.
6. “MATCH DAYS” Every three weeks all the teams of the project are gathered together in order to participate in a "Match day”. During these "Match days" children from all over Jerusalem get together and play football. We put a big Emphasis on fairness, equality, tolerance and mutual respect without differences of race, color or religion. For instance, at the beginning of every match, both teams, players and coaches, shake hands as a symbol of mutual respect and honor.
7. Goals and targets The main goal of the project is to give a fair and equal opportunity for every child in Jerusalem to feet into a program in which he can develop himself as a pupil, football player and most important, as the next generation of Jerusalem and Israel. Furthermore , bestowing the project's children significant values and guiding them to avoid violence and racism of any kind, and to provide them a place to spend their time besides the streets.
8. This project is being administrated completely by volunteers, mostly students and other Hapoel “Katamon” Jerusalem’s supporters, who believe these children can become a key factor in Jerusalem's future.
9. ACTIVITIES DURING 2009-2010 On our first year of activity we proudly work with 7 teams in different locations in Jerusalem, planning to extend our project to 12 schools next year.
13. This project is a unique opportunity that allows children from different backgrounds and cultures to get together and play football.
14. This is a chance they would never had without this project.
