Investigating Science 2 is educational software that provides children from 11 to
14 of age to learn more about science principles. For me, the software has a more
educational feel to it because there wasn’t much enjoyment coming from the learning.
There were activities for the user to learn from but they were somewhat boring and not
motivating enough. If I was the one using the software, I would feel that the
introduction part for each topic was not very effective because it just made use of long
boring paragraphs and a voice over to read the text. It’s like being inside the classroom
having the teacher read her presentation slides. It’s not very interesting to learn from.
Though the activities were a bit colorful and exciting, it wasn’t able to catch my
attention because it just made use of normal assessment styles. Even children aged 11
to 14 would prefer playing educational games than read a bunch of paragraphs and
answer some exercises after each chapter.
Even then, the software managed to give suffice details and it would be useful in
a classroom setting because that way, the teacher would have something to liven up the
class even just for a little bit.
If I were to make a localized version of this software, I would probably arrange
the topics according to year level and it would be better if they were clustered together
under the same branch of science. Also, instead of having slides of lecture, it would be
better if there were animation of the actual happenings for the specific topic. That way
it would be more enjoyable and at the same time educational. It would also be better if
the modes of assessment were done together with the lesson, that way, they would be
able to learn from their mistakes and make the right choices.
