A 43-year-old Elkton lawyer announced this week that he plans to file his candidacy for the
county Clerk of the Court on the 2010 ballet.
Derrick Lowe, a Republican, said he is anxious to start campaigning because he doesn’t have
strong name recognition despite living in Cecil County for seven years.
“Most people are probably more familiar with my wife,” he said. His wife, Dr. Elizabeth Lowe, is
a surgeon at Union Hospital and has deep roots in Cecil County.
Lowe, who grew up in Tennessee, earned his law degree in 2008 from Widener University Law
School and currently has a practice with Wanda “Cricket” Brown in Elkton. “I’ve been
considering running for clerk for awhile now,” he said.
Lowe gained familiarity with the clerk’s office and its staff during the year he worked as a law
clerk for District Court Judge O. Robert Lidums, finishing that task in March.
Lowe said he is confident that he has the tools to do the job and pointed to his education and
work experience in both business management and the law. He has a bachelor’s degree in
industrial technology and a master’s degree in business administration, in addition to his law
degree.
“I’ve got 10 years of automotive experience with Nissan in Tennessee where I focused on
quality and supervision,” he said. “I think I can bring fresh ideas to this position using my
business and legal background.”
Acknowledging longtime Clerk of the Court William Brueckman’s legacy, Lowe said the
incumbent has created and excellent staff in a well-functioning office.

2. “I do think I can tweak what’s in place and improve the efficiency of the process and the quality
of the product,” Lowe said. “I’m excited about running because I think there’s a lot of support
for me.”
His year as a full-time law clerk required him to deal daily with judicial files and staff, with
whom he said he already has a rapport.
“I’d just like to make the office better because even though it is a low-profile office, it has
constant dealings with the public,” said Lowe, who noted that everything from marriage,
divorce, real estate transactions, business licenses and law suits all go through the clerk’s office.
Lowe said electronic case filing will be coming in the future and he has experience in that arena.
Other records eventually will be transferred electronically, freeing up valuable floor space in
the clerk’s office, he said.
Jason Allison, another lawyer in Elkton, will be Lowe’s campaign treasurer and he said he’s in
the process of forming his election committee.
“I want to get started campaigning early,” he said. Lowe lives in Elkton with his wife, son and
daughter.
