The TBF is out in the streets again, spreading through public places and talking with the other arts in a
series of events that welcome the big book fair in town.

“THE BOOK IN OTHER WORDS”
Two days of book-related activities in town
TUESDAY 6/5/2014 & WEDNESDAY 7/5/2014
With a variety of activities and events, and as a result of a wider collaboration between bodies, groups and
people, “the book in other words” attempts to bring the book to unexpected sites and to highlight its
relationship with the public space:
The moving book kiosk, a small, moving, book-related kiosk stops at different places in the city and
promotes the idea of bookcrossing. With literature as a vehicle, a city with a rich literary history. Two
thematic walks, two routes in the city centre at various historical sites. Books in the courtyard: Thessaloniki
is left with few beautiful courtyards which could be of special use. We choose 4 of them in order for us to
welcome writers and their audience to a meeting with books. We offer readers a sightseeing tour regarding
the history of courtyards and their buildings and then writers read extracts from their books. Children and

books: In two of the future libraries of the city, Ms. Sofia Souparis organizes an original game of knowledge,
love and creation regarding books and a game of knowledge about the Thessaloniki Book Fair. A trip around
the world of Kavafy, a presentation of the facilities regarding the poetry of Constantine Cavafy. A different
sightseeing tour by Nana, the creators of the original architectural facilities based on the poetry of
Constantine Cavafy which will be hosted in the Stoa of Agios Minas. Information: www.parallaxi.gr

two ethnic groups that determined the culture of Istanbul and Thessaloniki, respectively. Eleni Dimopoulou reads
works of Panos Tzelepis. The musical group Taş Plak Kumpanyası accompanies reading with sefaraditic songs and
songs from Istanbul.

Domenikos Theotokopoulos Exhibition, on the occasion of the 400 years since his death including a chronology of
important moments of his life and work, as well as an exhibition with books regarding his work. In cooperation with the
Museum of Toledo and the Historical Museum of Crete [pavilion 13].

“Literary figures of Thessaloniki and the wider inland of Thrace and Macedonia”, by Yannis Vanides
Within the framework of the parallel action of Photobiennale of the Museum of Photography of Thessaloniki, the TBF hosts
an important record of literary figures of Northern Greece, including 212 coloured portraits from the edition “Literary
figures of Thessaloniki and the wider inland of Thrace and Macedonia” (Thessaloniki 2012).

COMICS FESTIVAL AT THE 11th TBF

The so-called 9th Art is particularly honored this year at the TBF. The specially fitted space, at pavilion 13,
will host publications of Greek and foreign creators as well as thematic exhibitions of comics, representative of
the modern Greek and international scene, while at the same time there will be discussions and workshops
addressed to children and adults.
EXHIBITIONS
"Les godillots" by Marko
Through the secrets of designing and publication of “Les godillots” comics, the original designs, sketches, the
scenario and drafts of the French comics designer Marko, there will be a presentation of the war everyday life
during 1914-1918.

Reframe: Narratives from Europe
Nine creators from Great Britain, Algeria and Turkey examine and present, through their comics, the cultural,
social and political dynamics between Europe and their countries. The exhibition is the product of cooperation
of three international comics festivals (International Comics Festival of Algiers [FIBDA], Istanbulles, Comica)

Celebrating 9th Art
Part of the exhibition Celebrating 9th Art, presented this year within the framework of Comicdom Con Athens
2014, aiming at underlining the universality of this type of art. The exhibition is organized by Comicdom Press
and the Hellenic-American Union, under the auspices of the Greek National Committee for the Unesco.

Part of the comics and illustration exhibition En Aithria 5, presented this year within the framework of
Comicdom Spring 2014, co-organized by Comicdom Press. The exhibition presents distinguished and new comics
creators.
Israeli Comics
Comics exhibition dedicated to Israel, the guest of honor country of this year’s Thessaloniki Book Fair. The
exhibition is co-organized by Comicdom Press and the Israeli Cartoon Museum.
 Mickey Shorts
Lovely short films with cartoons featuring Mickey Mouse, the diachronic and favourite character of young and
adults, will be screened during the Book Fair.
 Signings of international and Greek creators
During the Book Fair, at the stands of the participants at this part of the exhibition dedicated to comics,
international and Greek creators will sign copies of their work for the audience.
WORKSHOPS
Designing comics, with "Inkorrekt" group of creators
The only tools you need in order to design your own comic is paper, a pencil and… imagination! We’ll give you
the paper and pencil! Interactive workshop for young and adults would-be comic designers that will be open

The comics designer Michael Dialynas (Amala’s Blade, Woods) discusses and shares with the audience his
personal story about how he conquered the international comics scene.
17:30-19:00: Presentation - Conan: One Who Walked Alone
Yannis Kouroubakalis (Technical Manager of Comicdom Con Athens) is responsible for this presentation
dedicated to Robert E. Howard and his famous character, Conan. The tribute focuses on the transfer and
influence of the character regarding the comics and especially Greece, where he has thousands of fans.

11.00-14.00: From the drawing room to the bookshop...
On the occasion of the three-volume comics "Les Godillots" of the French creators Olier and Μarko on the First
World War, in this brief and descriptive workshop, we will have the chance to watch all the creative procedure
of the designing of comics step by step. From the initial idea and its designing until its digitalization and its
way to the printer’s to be bound. Presented by: Nick Dalabyras, philologist, radio producer, comics publisher

17:00-18:00: Workshop – Comics in libraries
Today, comics are one of the most widely spread means for the promotion of the love of reading. In public and
school libraries, around the world, there are daily, new programmes of use of the 9th Art. But what is
happening in Greece? Lida Tsene (Public Relations & Educational Programmes responsible at Comicdom Press)
coordinates this workshop which aims at recording and discussing how we can incorporate comics into libraries
and take advantage, in the most effective way, of this creative type of art. The workshop principally addresses
librarians and educators.
18.30-20.30: Discussion - Crowdfunding and Comics
On the occasion of the successful crowdfunding campaigns for the publication of Elysium Online and Panagia,
Chelidonou, the comics creators Ilias Kyriazis and George Tsiamadas, and the publishing director of Comicdom
Press, Ilias Katirtzigianoglou, discuss the alternative ways of financing of a comics edition through
crownfunding.
21.00-22.00 Presentation of the comics: «Les godillots» by the French Olier and Marko (BAMBOO
Publications) and “Charakomata” (“Trenches”) by Tassos Zafeiriades and Petros Christoulias.

15:00-16:00: Workshop – From Literature to Comics
How do we make a comic out of a literary text"? On the occasion of the recent publication of the graphic novel
of the famous short story of Marguerite Yourcenar, Panagia Chelidonou, the illustrator George Tsiamadas,
presents the creative procedure step by step.
17:00-18:00: Workshop – Constructing a Successuful Comics Scenario
The famous British comics writer, Peter Milligan, presents writing techniques of a successful comics scenario,
with examples of his previous and more recent work.
*The events, workshops and comics exhibitions will be hosted in the specially fitted “Comics Festival” Stand
at the centre of pavilion 13 (except for the presentation of “Les godillots” and “Charakomata” which will be
