motor and balance problems, and behavioral problems such

Studies and Reports
o The estimates from Alzheimer's Disease International
(ADI), a non-profit campaign group predicts that
dementia cases worldwide will triple by 2050. As per
the report, 44 million people worldwide have dementia
currently and the number is expected to reach 76
million in 2030 and 135 million by 2050. The
projected number of people with dementia in 2050 is
now 17 percent higher than ADI estimated in the 2009
World Alzheimer Report.
o According to a study in the Journal of the American
Heart Association, dementia risk might rise for older
women with heart disease. The study observed 6,500
U.S. women aged 65 to 79 who had healthy brain
function. It was found that those with heart disease
were 29 percent more likely to experience mental
decline over time than those without heart disease.

Treatment

changes in thinking, day-to-day function and behavior
associated with each type. Treatment of dementia depends
on its cause. Most types of dementia are progressive
and cannot be cured. However, there are treatments that
may temporarily improve symptoms. Treatment options
may combine pharmacological and non-pharmacological
approaches:
o Medications such as Cholinesterase inhibitors and
Memantine
o Physical therapy
o Occupational therapy
