12. Two Types of Standards Development
Individual method
• Participants are “individuals”: i.e., people
• Individuals represent themselves
• Each individual participant has one vote
• Ballot groups are made up of a minimum of 10 individuals
• Ballot group participants must be IEEE-SA individual members
Entity (Corporate) method
• Participants are “entities,” i.e., companies, universities, government
bodies, etc.
• Designated representative and alternate represent the entity
• Each entity has one vote
• Standards project initiation requires 3 entities to commit to
membership and payment of appropriate dues
• Entity sends representatives to participate in standards development
meetings

13. IEEE-SA Corporate Program
What is it and what does it do?
– Allows entities to be involved in the SA as
members
• Industry, academia, government, non-profits,
organizations
• Broad-based and diverse global membership
– Gives industry a direct voice in IEEE Standards
Association key programs
• Ensures your business interests are heard and
represented
• Through standards development
• Through governance (IEEE-SA Corporate Advisory Group)

15. IEEE-SA Corporate Program
How can industry benefit from the corporate
program?
– Influence technology development
• Incubate new technologies, standards and related services in a rapidly
changing environment
• Shape the direction of technology and its market place applications
– Drive the development of corporate standards to stay competitive
• Gain advanced knowledge by engaging in corporate standards projects
– Network with global thought leaders
– Other benefits
• Unlimited balloting on IEEE corporate standards
• Complimentary individual IEEE-SA memberships
• Discounts on all IEEE standards
• Access to consensus incubation activities like Industry Connections
• Global exposure through identification on IEEE-SA website
– See http://standards.ieee.org/develop/corpchan/general.html
Dennis Brophy - CAG Overview - IEEE P1904.1 SIEPON Seminar - April 2012 15
16. Industry Connections (IC)
What is it and what does it do?
– Efficient, economical environment for building consensus
– Produces "fast-track" materials, such as proposals for standards, white
papers, peer-reviewed specifications, guides, position papers and other
specialized tools
– Incubate new standards and related services
– Hone and refine thinking on rapidly changing technologies
– Can bridge the gap between standards development and market
adoption
– See standards.ieee.org/industryconnections
What are the benefits of the Industry Connections
program?
– Minimal overhead time & expense to begin collaborative work
– Flexibility to decide best/preferred path(s) forward and outcomes

18. IEEE Standards Education
Recognizes the importance of standards in meeting technical,
economic, environmental, and societal challenges
Knowledge of standards can help facilitate the transition from
classroom to professional practice by aligning educational
concepts with real-world applications
IEEE Standards Education Portal
– http://www.standardseducation.org
– Focal point for delivery of information on education about
standards, with free content
• Case studies and tutorials
• Student application paper information
• Glossary of standards terms and acronyms
• Information on continuing education at conferences

21. IEEE-SA Patent Policy and Activities
IEEE-SA’s patent policy is consistent with patent policies of ISO,
IEC, and ITU and most other SDOs
Designed to balance
– Needs of those implementing a standard
– Rights of intellectual property owners of technology necessary to
implement that standard
IEEE-SA’s patent policy contributes to
– Transparency earlier in process
– Confidence in commitments
– Global applicability
Patent-related activities with other organizations, including
– Memorandum of Understanding with European Patent Office
(EPO)
– Ongoing discussions with other patent organizations
– Speaker at European Commission events in 2010 & 2011
