2. Questions 1 : The king’ s Elephant
Problem
Once upon a time the King of Siam asked his worriors
to measure the weight of an elephant. However the
weight of the elephant was too heavy to be measured
by the biggest weighting machine avaible. Help the
worriors to solve the problem.
3. Identify the problem
measure the weight of an elephant
the weight of the elephant was too heavy to be
measured by the biggest weighting machine avaible
Help the worriors to solve the problem
4. Draw the diagram ( chose strategy )
Cut the elephant into a part
Measure the weights of all parts of elephant
x + x + x + x + x = 5x kg ( Elephant )
7. Using Equations (checking answer)
Density = mass ( kg )
volume
Let says density of water = 1 kg per liter
Volume of water desplacement = 1000 liter
1 kg liter = X
1000 liter
1000 kg = x
8. Questions 2 : Abu Nawas’ Problem
In one of the stories in ‘One Thounsand and One
Night’. Abu Nawas would only allow any traveller to
fetch water from the only well in the desert after
solving the following problem:
The travellers were given a 3-liter container and a 5-
liter container. They have to measure exactly four and
seven litres of water using the above containers. You
are required to help the travellers solve the problem.
9. Identify the problem
The travellers were given a 3-liter container and a 5-
liter container.
They have to measure exactly four and seven litres of
water using the above containers.
Help the travellers solve the problem
10. Draw the diagram ( chose strategy )
5 liter container 3 liter container
Now, pour the water into a containers to get 4 liter and
7 liter using above containers.
11. To get 4 liters of water
( carry out the strtegy)
1 litres + 3 litres = 4 litres
4 litres + 0 liters = 4 litres
12. To get 7 litres of water
5 litres + 2 litres = 7 litres
4 litres + 3 litres = 7 litres
13. Using formula
Equations To get 7 litres
Lets say 3 litre – x Y+(y–x)=7
Lets say 5 litre – y Y+(5-x)=7
To get 4 litre To get the
(y–x)+(y–x)=4 answers, subsititue x and
2(y –x ) = 4 y into the equations.
14. Act the situation ( checking answer )
See carefully and try to understand ^_^
