3. LENGTH
This earthquake lasted nearly 4 whole minutes and killed
approximately 131 people.
At a magnitude of 9.2 it is the second largest earthquake ever
recorded on Earth just behind Chile’s earthquake at a
magnitude of 9.5.
4. DAMAGE
Most of the damage occurred within the area of Anchorage, 75
miles from the epicenter.
The 60-foot tall control tower at Anchorage International Airport
could not brave seismic activity.
5. ELSEWHERE IN THE STATE
Most towns near the Prince William Sound, Kenai Peninsula, and
Kodiak Island areas, especially the major ports of
Seward, Whittier and Kodiak were strongly effected by a
combination of seismic activity, subsidence, aftermath tsunamis
and earthquake-caused fires.
6. CANADA
• A 4.5 ft (1.4 m) tsunami wave reached Prince Rupert, British
Columbia, just south of the Alaska Panhandle, just three hours after the
earthquake.
7. CALIFORNIA
Twelve people were killed by the tsunami in or near Crescent City,
California, while four children were killed on the Oregon coast at
Beverly Beach State Park. Other towns along the US Pacific Northwest
and Hawaii were damaged. Some Damage to boats reached as far as
Los Angeles.
8. AFTERMATH
There were thousands of aftershocks for three weeks. In the first day alone,
11 major aftershocks were recorded with a magnitude greater than 6.2. 9
more occurred over the next three weeks. It was not until more than a
year later that the aftershocks stopped.
9. IN CONCLUSION
• This earthquake was the 2nd worst earthquake ever recorded on earth.
• It killed nearly 150 people.
• It destroyed many businesses and houses.
• One of the worst recorded natural disasters in the U.S.
