4. Old media - Web 1.0 . . . . . static websites with no interaction, text heavy content. Information was just fed TO viewers (Others – if you dare!)
5. New media - Web 2.0 . . . . is interactive websites, open comments allowed, conversations and social networking WITH viewers encouraged
36. Why would you use it? Access to a GLOBAL audience enabling many voices F R E E!!! (in most cases) Your ideas and messages can be shared & spread very quickly Can take on a creative life of its own Very high profile – the latest ‘buzz’ Portrays the human voice of your organization You want share ideas in progress and let others join in and help It may be messy – so be prepared to deal with this You are already clear in your aims, but open to contributions
37. Why wouldn’t you use it? Tracking sites can be time consuming – so have a clear plan Needs fast internet connection (ADSL / Fibre) – rural issues Can be intimidating if not used to using the internet / technology Fickle – constantly changing ‘current fashionable product’ Not there to be controlled – groups may take your message and rebroadcast it, so it is important to listen to the social networks Be prepared for your organisation to change how it works Looser control on organisation message and authorization - won’t work if your message is written in stone, not electricity Invest time in staff learning new skills and the time to make it an organizational habit

Twitter can be so much to so many. Can just be 140 character of banality and “just had toast for breakfast”, but to many people it is so much more. Hopefully the next half hour will show some good examples of more creative ways to use Twitter
Firstly a bit more background to Social Media / New Media / Web 2.0
Nothing more than to signify a difference between the way the Internet has been used since the early 1990s (Web 1.0 or the old web) and how it is being used now (Web 2.0) and the difference between printed traditional media and something newer.
Web 2.0 is a collection of tools, applications and changes in working practice that have enabled people in communities to become more connected, to network with their peers and to collectively campaign as force not possible before. It has enabled supporting organisations develop a new way of working with their members; getting the message to them faster by using new techniques (all the senses not just printed word) and has allowed members to directly comment on and influence the organisations direction. Social Media is a way of using tools and platforms running on the Internet to instantly collaborate, share information and experiences, or have a conversation ideas or causes we care about. It’s a world where anyone can be a publisher, a reporter, an artist, a filmmaker, a photographer or pundit …. even an activist or citizen philanthropist!

Twitter is about “What are you doing?” or “What’s happening?”
Twitter can be used in many many ways, there are no “rules” so its what works for your organisation. Learn from others. NAVCAnews is both a feed of new items added to the NAVCA website, but also other areas of interest found or RT’ed by the information / comms team
Follow lists other people have created A good way to discover other people / other orgs that you have missed but others have found You can add a Twitter account to a list with out following that person – great for “occasional” groups you’d like to keep up to date with
This is an innovative feed from Halton Voluntary Action reporting development worker outcomes. Much easier and showing instant results than completion of paperwork back in the office. As Twitter is RSS enabled (see later) these can easily be scooped up by other applications and become a case file. Database / Outcomes reporting providers are looking into this way of capturing information
This is an interactive feed from Telford & Wrekin CVS – although there is a lot of news coming out from the CVS its all being fed in manually (rather than an auto RSS feed). One tweet (scroll back), about their Christmas fair was picked up by the local radio station and the CVS invited to go on-air to explain more about the event. This CVS has done their local research to find out who else is Tweeting in the area and followed up the links with conversations – a great way to increase your presence. .
This is a (generally) automated feed of news from Merton VSC – but a great easy way for anyone or any groups already on Twitter to keep up with what is happening in the local area.
