9. The Power Cleanse
Millions of people know deep inside that they do not feel well, yet
their doctors say they are normal and that it is in their “heads.”
Normal may mean the tests came back within range, but that does
not make people “feel” better. Between the few that are doing well
and those that are hospitalized, millions of us are living in a state
of quiet desperation, aware on some level that something is not
right.
Can you think of one person in your life that is not suffering from
some ailment or another?
When was the last time you actually felt “truly” healthy?
We have accepted that half of the people in our lives are at risk for
heart disease and un-aware of the risk of cancer.
Does it not seem odd that the National Institute of Health (NIH)
currently predicts that one out of every two people in the US
already have some form of cancer?
Rates of Cancer in the USA
1,248,899 per year
104,074 per month
24,017 per week
3,421 per day
142 per hour
2 per minute.
9
10. What is going on?
It is time to face the facts. Our air, food, and water are not getting
better and we are not feeling any better. Like it or not, living in a
toxic environment is affecting your health!
It is estimated that as much as 11.8 billion pounds of chemicals
and toxic waste are dumped into the air, food, and water in the
United States alone every year.
On average every man, woman and child in the United States is
exposed to 47 pounds of every year that include many known
carcinogens.
It is time to take action!
The Power Cleanse was created to serve as a practical tool to
assist health seekers on their quest to feel better. Cleansing is a
well researched, cost effective and commonly overlooked method
that accelerates healing and re-tunes the body for rejuvenation.
We originally designed this program as a “take action measure” for
those that are ready to respond to the overwhelming evidence that
has linked toxin exposure, to the most common health complaints
and illnesses that are plaguing us today.
Cleansing is a simple, achievable answer for a common problem.
Rather than giving up and believing what you have been told about
your poor health it is time to feel the powerful results of a cleanse
for yourself.
This program absolutely works!
The principles of the Power Cleanse have been taught in
California, New York and the Asian Pacific since 2001. We have
witnessed thousands of people eliminate toxin-related symptoms,
come off medications and reverse chronic illnesses.
Experiencing The Power Cleanse teaches people the vital secrets
for establishing good health habits that lead to permanent weight
loss and a life that thrives while ageing gracefully. The Power
Cleanse is designed to deliver the benefits of a longer more
expensive program in just 7 days.
10
11. The Power Cleanse is a step-by-step proven method for healing
and detoxification. After you have completed 7 days of the Power
Cleanse you may want to go a little further. The system can be
expanded to 14 or 21 days depending on your needs.
This book is filled with vital information on the link between a
polluted environment and that “run down” out of whack feeling we
all have to a degree. Dr. DeAndrea will share the 7 most common
factors to assure that you will thrive and grow more successful in
health and ultimately wealth. In addition you get the gift of ancient
healing wisdom and the solution for living in a toxic world that will
enliven every one of the 100 trillion cells in your body. When your
cells are healing, you are happy and you feel alive!

subcommittee that the oral polio vaccine caused nearly all polio
outbreaks since 1961.

22. How to achieve the health you want:
_________ + __________ = RESULTS
There are two reasons to create health:
1) To avoid suffering
• Pain
• Surgery
• Medications
• Debilitation
• Debt
2) To live life more fully
In order to achieve these results we must learn one empowering
fact:
Either we pay attention or pay with pain!
Many of us choose to ignore our bodies. We, for some strange
reason, convince ourselves that suffering is necessary and that we
do not deserve to feel better.
We have become accustomed to accepting results we do not
desire, because of our “misguiding” beliefs. Our beliefs can act as
filters that either limit or enhance our healing potential.
22
23. What do you believe?
Why do you believe you get ill?
What do you believe makes you healthy?
Where did you get the health information you believe?
What would be the ideal “source” to study to achieve health?
“I need not wait for I have the power to choose.”

25. Iatrogenic Disease?
On July 26th, 2000 The Journal of the American Medical
Association printed a Johns Hopkins School of Public Health Study
that reported doctors were the third leading cause of death in the
United States after heart disease and cancer, with 225,000 deaths
per year.
12,000 from unnecessary surgery
7,000 from medication errors
20,000 from hospitals errors
80,000 from hospital infections
106,000 from drug side effects
These were only from selected hospital s and did not include
private clinics, nursing homes, or social welfare programs.
Our health care system is the third leading
cause of death in the United States!
25
26. The average US physician dies at 58 years of age!
Our health care providers focus all of their efforts on treating
disease, but few ever practice or understand the applied meaning
of health.
Is your Doctor the picture of health?
Is your Pharmacist the picture of health?
Does the Hospital seem like a good place to get healthy?
26
27. What is health?
WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION:
A state of complete physical, mental-emotional and spiritual well-
being, not merely the suppressing of symptoms through the use of
a drug.
A hospital is a place where the treatments attend to problems that
are physical in nature with very little focus on the mental or
spiritual aspects of the human being. In essence, we are suffering
because a problem cannot be solved by focusing on only one-third
of the solution.
What is the one most valued aspect of your health?
What are your three biggest health challenges in order of
importance?
1)
2)
3)
27
28. What is disease?
INTEGRATIVE MEDICINE DEFINITION:
Disease is the lack of “ease” in the flow of energy through the
body, the mind and the spirit. It is this disharmony that stresses
the natural state of balance and leads to sickness.
Medicine still focuses on disease, giving it a failure orientation or a
negative belief filter. It is easier to believe disease catches people,
rather than accepting that we have planted the seeds of illness, to
which we are all constantly exposed.
How are energy and health related?
Where energy flows harmoniously life is abundant. The factors
that shape your quality and quantity of life must support your ability
to make energy.
Where do we get energy?
Air – Oxygen
Water
Food – Nutrients
Toxin – Elimination

for proving that when cells do not receive these basic
elements they mutate and become cancerous.
It was found that when cells did receive these basic elements they
could live indefinitely!
What are the three most common causes of energy depletion that
lead to disease?

65. Breaking the cleanse
It is important for the week after the cleanse to treat your digestion
very delicately. We recommend staying on a plant-based diet for
at least four days. Stay with the smoothies for breakfast this
week. Mix up the rest of the meals. Have one cooked plant based
meal and one uncooked plant based meal each day. It is
important not to binge.
Try and incorporate moderation into your new eating habits. If you
are going to have animal products this week, we recommend no
more than four ounces a day.
If you want to continue to cleanse
If you completed the Level 1, 2, or 3 and feel strong, you may
continue on your current level for another 7 or 14 days or go to the
next level for the next 7 or 14 days.

68. The Power Cleanse
Almost daily, another fad diet is touted as the next remedy for the
crisis of obesity in America today. We would like to go on record
stating that this book does not represent the next fad diet craze. It
was not written to send throngs of people on yet another neurotic
search for misguided perfection, but to teach an age-old technique
that uses food for healing. Our goal is to explain some basic
guidelines that may be incorporated into any life-long diet
regimen. Each individual may learn fundamental concepts and
practices for self-healing, permanent weight loss and lifetime
wellness.
This book presents unadulterated truths about our ailing
environment and the present state of affairs in the health care
system based on our research–and we stand by it. We practice all
of the techniques that are presented. The information is taught
through a weekly program that empowers people to take healing
into their own hands. We give full credit to the holistic community
for giving us the confidence to bring this information to the public.
Taking responsibility for our own health, rather than relegating it to
the care of others, is increasingly a significant part of living a
healthy life. Many factors support this assertion. Based on
current data, it is conceivable that in our lifetime, this planet’s
population will double. Baby boomers will not necessarily be
guaranteed either Social Security or accessible and adequate
health care. As we write this book predictions are being made that
the health care system will need 3 trillion dollars in resources to
provide even adequate services in the next 5 years (U.S. Dept. of
Health and Human Services, 2001).
Current studies on medical outcomes argue for greater self-care.
According to a Johns Hopkins School of Public Health study
published June 26, 2000, Treatments prescribed by physicians
were the fifth leading cause of death in the United States after
cancer and heart disease, with over 106,000 deaths attributed to
drug side effects alone (Starfield, 2000). These are considered
conservative estimates since this was only a partial assessment of
the health care system nationwide.
We are concerned about the future of health care. It is easy to get
68
69. lulled into a false sense of security about what is considered
normal health. It is common to look around to friends and
immediate family to determine whether or not we are living well.
We all use what others say about their well-being as a gauge for
our own well-being. After all, if everybody around us seems happy
and healthy, everything must be good. Right?
According to the National Institute of Health, over half of all
Americans are at risk for developing heart disease and one in two
already have cancer. Let us restate that more tangibly. Look
around and count off the first three people you see. Of the three
adults or children you counted, according to the nation’s primary
health research center, one of these people already has some
form of cancer, right now!
You can do the math yourself. Somewhere near 110 million
Americans are expected to die of either cancer or heart disease. If
this is the case, are these “normal illnesses” really diseases or are
they plagues? One further question to consider:
Does it make sense that 80% of the industrialized world is taking
some form of prescription medication?
Does it make sense that I should be expected to have my first
heart attack by the ripe old age of forty?
Under proper conditions, the human body has the capacity to live a
disease- free life for 125 years. With clean air, food, water, plenty
of exercise, adequate rest, and a minimal level of stress, becoming
a centurion is a birthright. It was not uncommon, at the advent of
this century, to find many populations of people that lived simply
and achieved triple-digit ages
In the past 50 years, advances in the chemical industry have made
our chances of living disease-free as uncommon as coming home
from Las Vegas with a profit. Technology has simplified many
things since the crank-start Model T Ford, but we have paid for
them in drastic proportions. No better measure of our "debt to
convenience" exists than the immediate impact it has on the purity
of our air, food, and water. Consequently, it affects our body and
its ability to maintain optimum weight.
The human being is composed of elements found in nature that
69
70. are received from air, food, and water. In order to stay lean and
healthy, it stands to reason that the ingredients used in the
construction and maintenance of our bodies must come from the
best possible sources.
Our bodies are essentially a product of our environment. We are
extensions of the Earth.
According to the magazine Multinational Monitor published in 2003
over 11.8 billion pounds of chemicals and neuro-toxic waste are
dumped into the air, water, and food every year in the United
States alone. Many of these chemicals have never been tested to
determine the long-term effects on humans or the planet. This is
well-documented information that has never been reported in the
mass media. Just to clarify, those 11.8 billion pounds of toxins
works out to 24 pounds of chemicals for every man, women and
child on the North American continent.
Could regular exposure to small doses of over 70,000 known
chemicals throughout a lifetime contribute to sluggish metabolic
function and the medical conditions that are presently plaguing the
American public? Imagine a 24-pound jug of arsenic sitting on
your kitchen counter. Imagine it was your duty, in the interest of
convenience, to take a sip of this poison every morning before you
head off to work.
Does this sound too far fetched? Are these the ravings of a bunch
of health nuts? Do we seem a little overzealous?
70
71. About Our Nation's Water Supply
The tap water in 25 states across the nation has already been
designated “unsafe” due to high levels of arsenic. Every time a
person takes a shower in water that has not been filtered, they
draw enough moisture through their skin to receive a heavy dose
of several known contaminants, including arsenic. Showers
deliver poison in little sips.
Water is an essential ingredient for survival. The human body is
composed of 78% water. Water is the main component of the very
blood and plasma that carries nutrients through out the body. We
are very much a system of rivers and oceans contained within the
arteries and veins of our circulation. Likewise, it is the great
bodies of water that supply the fluid that will eventually fill our
forming tissues and bathe each individual cell in every organ.
In essence, we are a smaller version of the waterways that we tap
into for our daily supply of hydration. When the planet’s rivers,
oceans, and aquifers become contaminated, it stands to reason
that we will be poisoned.
– Over 100,000 miles of California’s ground water is considered
undrinkable.
– Every year, 7 million Americans are hospitalized for tap water
contaminants.
– Giving water to a baby from an unfiltered faucet can cause
sudden infant death syndrome.
71
72. Our Air
It is hard to read this kind of information and not feel a bit short of
breath. There is nothing like a nice clean breath of fresh air to help
relax and calm the nerves. Air is composed of oxygen and
nitrogen–two vital nutrients needed for the function of the human
body.
• You cannot live without oxygen for more than 5 minutes.
• Without oxygen, your body cannot metabolize the nutrients
acquired from food and water.
• Oxygen is the catalyst behind all cellular function and fat
metabolism.
• Oxygen is the driving force behind blood flow to the brain
and other organs. It is the concentration of oxygen available
in the air that determines how hard the body must work to
survive.
• When oxygen levels run low individual cells malfunction,
large amounts of metabolic waste are produced, we store
unwanted fat and whole organ systems fail.
For an average human being, the body optimally requires an
atmospheric oxygen concentration of 21% to function. However,
the oxygen concentration available for breathing in most major
metropolitan areas is only around 11 to 14%. This may not sound
like much of a difference, but it does represent a -one-third
reduction in oxygenation. In the hospital a person that receives a
third less than normal oxygen intake is considered hypoxic or in a
state of mild suffocation. The inescapable conclusion is that we
are being chemically strangled by polluted city air.
One of the most common causes of air pollution is the internal
combustion engine, found in most motor vehicles, which produces
carbon monoxide (CO). In the blood stream CO has a greater
affinity for hemoglobin than oxygen. Strangely enough, the human
body is fooled by CO molecules and mistakes them for very
magnetic oxygen molecules. For human beings exposed to
inordinate amounts of atmospheric CO, less oxygen is carried to
their brains and other organs. What impact does this have on us?
72
73. Is it possible that the body becomes more prone to obesity and
other illnesses simply by not having enough of its primary
nutrient? In 1956 Dr. Otto Warburg won the Nobel Prize in
medicine for proving that cancer cannot grow in a high-oxygen
environment.
Most cities in the industrialized world suffer from air pollution
caused by factories and automobiles. The average number of cars
in China is one for every nine people. In the United States there
are two cars for every person and that number is growing. Los
Angeles and New York rank in the top five most-air-polluted cities
in the world. Breathing the air in Los Angeles is equivalent to
smoking a half pack of cigarettes every day. Does this make you
want to lock yourself up at home and seal all the windows?
However, the Environmental Protection Agency has determined
that indoor air pollution is, in many cases, 100 times worse than
outdoor air pollution
Our homes and furnishings are manufactured in the most cost-
effective manner. Petrochemicals, synthetic textiles, and toxic
building materials are used in the construction of houses, cars,
furniture, and appliances. In addition, we use harsh chemicals in
our homes to clean, decorate, and ward off unwanted intruders.
Household cleaners, paints, polishes, and insecticides are made
with many carcinogenic (cancer-causing) chemicals. Most of the
ingredients have been proven to contribute to respiratory
problems, neurological dysfunction, chronic fatigue syndrome and
a lack of motivation. Many of these products have extreme
“caution” and “poison” warning signs on the labels.
Physicians are diagnosing a new set of illnesses with such great
frequency that whole new departments of medicine are forming in
major universities across the country to deal with these problems.
Chronic fatigue syndrome, sick building syndrome, and many auto-
immune disorders including AIDS, multiple sclerosis and lupus
have been linked to environmental causes. These and many other
conditions have been grouped into a catchall phrase known as
“Multiple Chemical Sensitivities”
The medical establishment seems to be becoming more aware
that the toll of living every day in a country where 40% of the water
is unsafe and where the air is so bad that it increases the risk of all
forms of cancer by 426 times the rate expected by the EPA. You
73
74. have to ask: Is this contributing to the health care crisis?
It is time to recognize that you have been part of an insidious
experiment that has been taking place without your consent.
Slowly, but steadily in the last 60 years, more and more new
chemicals have been created. Many have never been tested, few
are being regulated, and none have been studied to see what
would happen if they were dumped into our oceans and rivers.
Air and water pollution are enough to adversely affect our overall
state of health. However, perhaps the most significant cause of
disease is in our refrigerators.
We Are What We Eat!
Food, glorious food, so edible and scrumptious! It is a gift from
nature. Will we ever have a more intimate relationship with nature
than when we put it inside of us? Intimacy, as far as food goes, is
a good thing as long as the relationship is not destructive. Food
provides the building blocks for the human body. It provides
macronutrients in the form of carbohydrates, fats and proteins. In
addition, it offers us a very well organized way to get
micronutrients in the form of enzymes, vitamins, minerals, fiber,
antioxidants and other phyto-substances.
On the gross level our food seems very much unchanged. A
carrot seems to be a carrot and an orange an orange. However,
some subtle changes have taken place in the past sixty years.
Now different designations for food have created
misunderstanding, confusion, and controversy.
In recent years, the term “organic” has been springing up in
markets across the country, yet few people seem to really
understand the meaning or value behind this term. This term, in
addition to the label “organically grown,” is a designation that is
given to all foods that have been produced in accordance with the
“Organic Foods Act of 1990.” This act, passed in the state of
California, was put in place to label food that has been grown
without the use of chemicals, genetics or any other form of
scientific manipulation. It was put into effect in the United States to
assure that there would be some food that was free to grow as
nature intended. More and more people are becoming aware that
heavy chemicals, pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, acids,
insecticides, antibiotics, hormones, and genetic manipulation are
74
75. regularly used in the production and packaging of commercially
grown foods.
One crispy red apple may have any number of up to 36 different
chemicals used in the growing process that are not mentioned on
the label. Many of these chemicals are known carcinogens that
are not well regulated or adequately tested. Most of these
agricultural chemicals are used to deter insects. They work mainly
by interrupting the delicate nervous and metabolic systems of
insects while apparently leaving the fruits and vegetables they
protect alone to grow “normally.”
The problem is that these toxins irritate all nervous and cellular
systems. Even though only small amounts of these chemicals are
required to have the desired effect on insects, repeated exposure
to remaining toxic residues may have a cumulative impact on the
human system. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is
aware of this possibility and regularly collects random fat samples
from human cadavers to test for high levels of chemicals. In 100%
of cases, the EPA finds 7 to 10 known deadly chemicals collected
in the fatty tissue of recently deceased Americans.
This information is easy to read about, but it sure makes good
television. In 2001, Bill Moyers, a noted television investigator and
journalist, hosted a special called, “Trade Secret of the Chemical
Industry.” During this program he exposed many industrial
sources of poison and environmental contamination. He then
offered his own blood for random testing to determine whether or
not chemicals accumulate in the average human body. Mr.
Moyers’ blood was drawn and analyzed in laboratories at Mount
Sinai Hospital, a well-known university hospital on the upper east
side of Manhattan.
The results were astounding. A news reporter for most of his life,
with no previous exposure to deadly chemicals, Mr. Moyers had 84
toxins in his blood stream, many of which are known to cause
cancer. It was clear that he must have come in contact with these
toxins through the air, food, and water.
Use of potentially deadly chemicals is not the only source of
concern in terms of food cultivation and production. Seventy
percent of foods sold in supermarkets across the country are
genetically modified. Genetic modification is a biotechnology that
75
76. alters food at the molecular level using a virus and or bacteria to
mix the gene codes. A few of the many manipulative tactics
include crossing tomato genes with cucumbers, fish genes with
corn, and human genes with swine using live viruses.
The belief behind this technology is that scientists will be able to
control growth cycles and consequently increase crop yields to
feed the hungry. The problem is that not a single study has been
done to determine whether or not changing food at the genetic
level can harm humans. In addition, genetically altered food is not
labeled any differently than unmodified foods. The majority of the
population has been consuming chemically and genetically altered
food unknowingly. Many of us are the unwitting test subjects of a
genetic experiment fueled by commercial interests.
Genetic modification is a clever trick spearheaded by Monsanto
Pharmaceuticals and several other biotechnology companies.
These companies say their intentions are altruistic–to feed the
hungry–but the real motivation for genetically altering food is
greed. Once a food has been genetically altered, it can be
patented as a product owned by that corporation. Imagine a future
where the banana is no longer the collective property of human
beings, but of one company.
These biotechnology companies have the ability to engineer seeds
that terminate after the initial growth cycle. A farmer may use the
seeds to grow his bananas, but after harvest time he has to go
directly to that corporation to get more viable seeds. In essence,
genetic modified or GMO foods will give a few companies the
ability to monopolize the food market for generations to come.
In addition, genetically modified plants are altered to withstand
larger doses of chemicals and pesticides. This is a great idea as
far as pesticide and biotech firms are concerned, because it
enables them to sell more chemical products for food cultivation.
While there is little research that proves the safety and
amenability of gene-altered food, one thing is certain: chemically
resilient produce will expose people to far greater concentrations
of carcinogens in the coming years.
Unlike our relationship with air and water, we can control much of
our chemical intake by simply eating organically grown foods and
limiting our consumption of animal products. Over 60% of the
76
77. chemicals that we are exposed to are delivered to us through our
food, specifically from animal products. Simply put, animals drink
the same water, breathe the same air, and eat the same food that
we eat. They accumulate toxins in the same way from the same
sources that we do. Consequently, when we eat food from animal
sources we expose ourselves to a concentrated dose of toxins.
Upon learning of the reality of toxic exposure through simple
contact with air, food, and water it is not uncommon to find oneself
slipping into a state of confusion and fear. It might seem there is
nothing one can do to stay healthy. How do you separate and
protect yourself from the regular environment of daily living?
Fortunately, there are solutions. Each one of us has the power to
reverse the effects of life-long toxic stress. Additionally, if we are
willing to take responsibility for our personal environments, a
valued contribution is made to cleaning up the Earth. Our planet
will heal, one person at a time.
There is a 4,000-year-old healing technique that comes to us from
the ancient wisdom of Ayurvedic Medicine. Ayurveda is a healing
philosophy and science that does not separate the diseased
individual from the environment. It is a medical art originating in
India that uses the power of food to stimulate subtle physiologic
forces that have the power to reverse disease, effect weight loss
and rejuvenate the body.
The central practice in Ayurvedic medicine is the use of
detoxification to reset the body’s metabolic systems and focus
them on deep healing. The remarkable thing about this ancient
medical system is that it is highly intuitive and in many cases
people, including the authors, have happened onto this system
unknowingly while searching for answers to their own health
challenges.
The healing power in food is limitless. It makes sense that millions
of people are constantly in search of the perfect diet plan. Our
inner voice is always crying out to us that part of the answer to our
problems lies in our relationship with food. This program aims to
assist us in mending that relationship so that we may become
reconnected to the healing potential of nature.
77
78. The Power Cleanse
Ok, so now you understand a little bit about how diet and lifestyle
can create a toxic condition in your body. Making a few dietary
and lifestyle changes will help but the best way to get your body
functioning better and eliminating a lot of those accumulated toxins
is to do a complete cleanse.
What is a cleanse?
A cleanse is a technique that is designed to encourage the body to
remove toxins. Toxins are natural and/or synthetic substances
that accumulate in tissues and organ systems of the body. Eating
a diet high in cholesterol will lead to blockages in the arteries of the
heart. Similarly, mucus, other organic materials and inorganic
chemicals accumulate in various organs and tissues of the body,
causing waste removal systems to malfunction leading to serious
illness.
Why cleanse?
The exposure to toxic chemicals interrupts normal bodily function.
Pharmaceuticals, herbicides, pesticides, hormones, antibiotics,
heavy metals, pollution, preservatives, dyes, fillers, cleaners,
disinfectants and processed foods represent only a small
percentage of the substances that we are exposed to on an hourly
basis. After years of exposure to these agents the body can no
longer keep up with their elimination, so they get re-circulated back
into the bloodstream, damage the liver, and are stored in fats and
many other parts of the body.
As toxins build up throughout the body, disease silently develops.
The intestines acquire micro-ulcerations, acid imbalances, bacteria
and fungal overgrowth, lesions, hyper-secretion of mucus, and
many other problems. The liver becomes saturated with fatty
acids and as cells die, bile flow becomes inhibited making the
digestion of fats more difficult (so, no matter what you eat you gain
weight!). The kidneys develop sluggish filtration causing the blood
stream to stay acidic effecting overall body chemistry, immunity
and mood. As toxins accumulate at the cellular level the skin
becomes pale, wrinkled, and gray and loses its overall glow.
78
79. Eventually, disease advances damaging all organ systems of the
body.
When to cleanse
In a toxic environment, cleansing is a matter of survival. In order
to reverse serious illness, toxic accumulations must be removed to
encourage healing. A healing plan that disregards the use of a
serious cleansing technique may result in the gradual removal of
some toxins, but in most cases detoxification is extremely slow or
non-existent. The use of a proven cleansing technique can make
the difference between a progressive healing plan and endless
frustration. Cleansing catalyzes healing where medications, diet,
yoga, exercise and meditation often fall short.
A good cleansing routine should occur 2 to 4 times a year. As the
external world changes, so does the internal environment. As the
planet moves toward an environmental crisis it will become more
obvious that we are integrally connected to our surroundings. It is
self-evident that the world around us is in need of nurturing. The
greatest gift we can give each other is to heal ourselves. Now is
the time to cleanse. RIGHT NOW!
Where to cleanse
Cleansing is a challenging endeavor. Often, people finish a
cleanse with the feeling that something has changed within, that
life has shifted. It is important to find a nurturing environment that
is supportive of your challenges. If you can perform your cleanse
during a vacation or on weekends take the opportunity. If this is
not possible, it is best to pace yourself and clear space at home.
Turn off the TV, unplug the phone, light candles, burn incense and
spend some quiet time alone.
Do not involve individuals in your cleanse that are not supportive
or understanding of your need to change. A cleanse is a quest or
journey deep into the forgotten places within. In reality, only you
can fully identify with your healing process. A community or group
setting that is performing the same cleanse is most encouraging.
It's nice to know you're not the only one with the need to cleanse.
Stay close to home, rest and try to observe rather than interact.
Cleansing is a process of regeneration.
79
80. Who should cleanse?
In spite of common thought, not just anyone should jump into a
cleanse. All things that are challenging and life altering are
preceded by a calling or desire to rediscover the self. While
cleanses can be extremely healing, it is important to balance a
cleanse with periods of rebuilding and strengthening using other
techniques (i.e. yoga, meditation, supplements, etc.). Continuous
cleansing without a period of recovery will eventually weaken your
immune system and your integrity.
Sometimes during a cleanse there will be a "healing crisis." My
grandmother always said, " things usually get worse before they
get better." While on a cleanse, the body will purge. The release
of toxins will bring up physical and emotional trauma that will be
reflected in certain symptoms. A healing crisis can last as long as
an hour or a few days and often produces these symptoms:
• Fever-chills
• Headaches and other aches
• Fatigue-weakness
• Skin eruptions
• Emotional irritability
• Gas-bloating
• Temporary constipation or diarrhea
• Temporary loss of menstruation
• Yawning-dizziness
• Muscular tension
In most cases, it is important not to use drugs to suppress these
symptoms, but instead, to encourage the release of toxins from the
body. These symptoms are an expression of release and must
come out. After all, whether emotional or physical, a release may
not always be pleasurable, but it does lead to a change for the
best.
80
81. Cleansing is as much a personal as a planetary journey. We all
must eventually find our way back to health, if we wish to be
happy. Healing is just a matter of time.
How to cleanse
It is important to choose a cleanse that has incorporated some
element of balance and flexibility. Select a cleansing technique
that is not too extreme, but is also challenging. There must be
some degree of challenge built into the technique if it is going to be
worth your time. The most powerful life experiences involve a little
struggle.
There are many areas of the body that one can detox. The GI
tract, liver, gallbladder, skin, lymphatic system, lungs, and kidneys
are usually the organ systems in most need of a cleanse. The 7
day complete cleanse is a general cleanse that will catalyze
regeneration in all of these systems. It is a technique that does not
require expensive supplements, drastic diet changes or unusual
machines. This cleanse is challenging and is designed to work for
any body.
You may or may not notice immediate improvements. In some
cases, there have been total elimination of symptoms with just one
cleanse. Just keep in mind that internal healing may be taking
place even though there is no apparent external change. If you
make the effort to cleanse it will have an effect on your life.
Change is very often subtle, but profound
It is possible for anybody to attain greater health through regular
cleansing and detoxification. It is not possible, however, for every
person to expect the same results. Each of us has a set of unique
life circumstances that have a profound effect on the way we heal.
It would make common sense then to customize any health
regimen to suit ones individual situation.
Sometimes, an advanced program can hinder healing as much as
it may seem that it could help. Honoring ones ability is strong
medicine, be honest and choose the level that appeals to your
instincts. There are no trophies for cleansing!

medicine, but instead will interest his patients
in the care of the human frame,
in diet, and in the cause and prevention of
disease."

83. Power Cleanse
Plant Based Foods
For the week, it will be necessary to follow a 100% plant based
diet. A move toward organic plant based nutrients will naturally
reduce your exposure to toxins. A plant-based diet would include
all vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds, grains and sea vegetables. Try
your best to purchase organic (non-commercially produced) fruits,
vegetables and other packaged goods. Organically grown foods
contain 80-280% more vitamins, minerals and nutrients than
conventionally grown foods.
Conventionally grown foods are subjected to herbicides, pesticides
and other deadly chemicals. These chemicals are classified as
carcinogens. They are, to a large degree, the reason cancer is a
household word. A change in eating habits is the most powerful
step that anyone can take in the struggle to survive. This one
week plant-based diet will accelerate your body’s ability to remove
toxins.
Uncooked, Live or Raw Foods
Most cooked food is difficult to digest. The live food diet is
composed of uncooked plant based foods. All common fruits,
vegetables, and nuts can be eaten raw with the proper
preparation.
Live whole foods are abundant in the life giving enzymes, vitamins
and minerals necessary to optimize healing. Every single reaction
that occurs in the body requires the presence of an enzyme.
These complex proteins build the stage where every bodily
function is performed. Without them, the show won't go on!
Research has proven that enzyme deficiencies are the most
common factor that contributes to accelerated aging and disease.
When food is cooked to a temperature of 118 degrees or greater
50% of the proteins, 80% of the vitamins and 90% of the enzymes
are destroyed. Food that is denatured to this degree will make
digestion a chore. In fact, the body must use up its emergency
store of enzymes for digestion. Live food will restore your enzyme
banks and allow the intestines, liver and pancreas to get a long
83
84. overdue rest.
Eating live food may seem a little foreign, but as the days pass
your body will welcome the experience. Fruits and vegetables are
naturally very high in fiber and water. Fiber and water will lubricate
and sweep the intestines clearing the way for better assimilation.
Blending Fruits and Vegetables
Blended fresh fruits and vegetables are the cornerstone of the
cleanse.
Blending raw fruits and vegetable make them much easier for our
bodies to digest. We are able to absorb more nutrition from a
blended meal and our bodies use up less energy on digestion.
This saved energy can be used to help cleanse and heal the body.
When we consume a liquid diet the body responds with full healing
potential.
Hippocrates, the father of modern medicine said, "let food be thy
medicine and let medicine be thy food." A liquid diet is proof of the
powerful medicinal value in food. Blended foods are concentrated
with vital nutrients that will support the body's ongoing functions
while simultaneously allowing eliminatory organs to rest.
A liquid diet is a universal remedy for many common illnesses. All
animals instinctively abstain from eating when they are sick. Our
bodies intrinsically accept a liquid diet as a healing tool. Our
metabolism switches gears when we alter our intake of food. The
body will move into a catabolic (dismantling state) cycle to make
room for new growth.
The main purpose of the liquid diet is to accelerate detoxification
and promote healing. A liquid diet is essential during a cleanse,
because it accelerates the healing process by giving the body and
the digestion a rest.
The top ten diseases in the industrial world are conditions of over-
indulgence. A liquid diet will positively affect heart disease,
cancer, diabetes, arthritis, stroke, osteoporosis, hypertension,
asthma, ulcers, bronchitis, colitis and obesity.
Cleansing on a liquid diet is not a new healing technique. In the
past, people cleansed for reasons that brought them closer to their
84
85. divine nature. Moses, Jesus, Mohammed and Buddha all
cleansed for spiritual and health concerns. Socrates, Plato and
Hippocrates account the benefits of cleansing to promote mental
clarity. Deepak Chopra, MD, Albert Schweitzer, MD and Benjamin
Spock, MD all agree that cleansing is one of the most under
utilized healing techniques available. It is not uncommon for even
the most conservative physician to instruct their patients to abstain
from eating during an acute condition (i.e. the flu).
Cleansing is a multifaceted experience. It affects us emotionally,
creating an internal environment for the release of traumatic
issues. With each cleanse, personal values can change. Stressful
life events, addictions and obsessions can be alleviated by a
cleanse. During a cleanse it is not uncommon to release anger,
fear, sorrow or even experience intense euphoria. And many
people have had realizations that change their lives.
Physiologically, cleansing gives the liver and digestive system a
break. It allows the lymph system to flush and gives our cells a
chance to purge. Over all, it is an opportunity to clean house.
Mucus and toxic build-up is released during a cleanse to clear the
way for a more favorable healing environment. These are some
benefits of cleansing:
More Energy Deeper Sleep
Weight Loss Inspiration
Clearer Complexion Relaxation
Longevity
A rest from regular eating patterns enhances our appreciation of
food. The taste buds will become more sensitive and eating will
become more sacred. Most importantly, cleansing can be
undertaken by anybody at any time. There is no need for fancy
machines or expensive medications to complete a cleanse.
A healing crisis can arise during a cleanse. Dramatic emotions
may accompany the aforementioned cleansing reactions. These
emotions may come in waves as toxins are released into the blood
stream. Realizations are made during a cleanse that usually are
not appreciated under normal circumstances. Jobs, relationships,
and belief systems are often challenged.
Again, it is not wise to attempt a cleanse during the third trimester
of pregnancy. A host of toxins are being released from tissues that
85
86. can endanger the child. Here are some conditions that require
extra attention from your physician before cleansing:
Severe Cancer
Malnutrition
Congestive heart failure
Pre and post surgery
Cardiac Arrhythmia's
Coumadin therapy
Even a great healing tool can be harmful if not used judiciously.
These conditions are usually not an issue during a blended diet. If
you have any of these conditions please check with your physician
before proceeding with the program.
It is time to realize that healing happens from the inside out. Our
health is as much a function of elimination as it is ingestion. The
colon or lower digestive tract is a major organ of elimination. The
average colon is about five to six feet long and about 2 ½ inches
wide, yet the total surface area can cover a tennis court. The
colon receives waste products from the liver, throat, sinuses,
lungs, blood, and lymph system and must cope with any
undigested fecal matter.
A poorly functioning colon arises from a diet of cooked over
processed food, a stressful lifestyle and a lack of exercise. These
factors can cause symptoms of constipation, gas, hemorrhoids,
nausea, bloating, headaches and fatigue. During a cleanse, the
colon must work overtime to deal with the additional burden of
eliminating toxic waste from the tissues.
A colon that is clogged with undigested food, hardened stools and
toxins must be cleaned in order to rejuvenate the body. Enemas
are an optional part of this program, but may speed up the healing
process. An enema will clean the colon while exercising and
toning it. Enemas are an effective way to deal with the toxic waste
that has built up in the digestive tract through the course of a
lifetime.
Don’t expect others to be knowledgeable or accepting of enemas.
Our culture does not concern itself with things it can avoid “Out of
sight, out of mind.” This area of the body carries significant
cultural taboos, especially for men. If you are criticized for taking
care of yourself, realize that it comes from a place of fear and
86
87. ignorance. Enemas are used regularly as a healing tool in
European hospitals and have a history that dates back to Ancient
Egypt.
“Most of the diseases plaguing Americans could be avoided
by making changes in diet and lifestyle alone.”
-- Former Surgeon General, Everett C. Koop, MD

88. Frequently Asked Questions:
Will I get enough protein?
The American Dietetic association agrees that you can get enough
protein by eating a variety of fruits and vegetables over a 24-48
hour period. The World Health Organization suggests that 30-50
grams of protein daily is sufficient (this is about one heaping
tablespoon of protein powder
What if I can't get organic food?
Try your best. Visit some local health food stores and stock up at
the farmers markets. There are even home organic delivery
services. If it is still too difficult, rest assured that the cleanse will
be as profound with commercially grown foods. Scrub your
commercially grown produce in a full sink of water with the juice of
one lemon and 1 tablespoon salt.
Can I have a little milk?
Milk is an extremely inflammatory substance. It has proteins and
sugars that are foreign to the human body. Milk aggravates the
immune system and forces the liver to work harder. It is best to
avoid milk during a cleanse. Rice or soy milk is a better option.
Can I still work?
It's all right to work, but take it slow and pace yourself. A long day
of work will probably be more challenging. Remember that a
balanced life will be healthier long term as well.
Can children cleanse?
We suggest that a child who is capable of preparing their own food
can do a cleanse. It is difficult to attend to a cleansing schedule if
you cannot provide for yourself. If a child is fully motivated and is
willing take responsibility have them follow the cleanse to the best
of their ability.
88
89. What if I'm pregnant?
If you are not in your last trimester of pregnancy it is fine to
cleanse. A cleanse is a process of elimination. Most of the toxins
are spilled into the blood stream and can affect the child or cause
premature labor. Before or during the initial phases of the
pregnancy a cleanse can relieve morning sickness and other
complaints.
Why do I have to soak nuts for my morning smoothie?
Soaking nuts provides the water needed to activate the sprouting
process and remove the seed inhibitor. As these nuts sprout they
get softer and increase their enzyme activity level. They become
more digestible and less fattening. Cover the whole raw nuts or
seeds with purified water for 8 hours. Rinse thoroughly.
Refrigerate.
Are sprouts good for you?
Sprouting is a stage in the growth process of every plant. It is a
time when the plant is highest in vitamins, minerals and other
nutrients. Sprouts are very easy to digest. They are ideal for
people with weak digestion.
Will I be able to digest raw food?
Raw food is full of many digestive enzymes that aid in digestion.
Hard vegetables can be difficult to digest. Blending the food
increases the digestibility of vegetables, fruits, nuts and seeds that
is why we recommend the blended soups and the smoothies.
Will I get enough protein?
There is enough protein in grass to grow a 3,000-pound cow.
Vegetables are rich protein sources and can supply us with
enough protein for a healthy life. In any case, one week of raw
food will not cause a protein deficiency.
What if I am traveling?
Bring your blender and do the best you can do. Green juices
(cucumber, zucchini, celery, spinach, parsley are good substitutes
89
90. for the soups or smoothies. They do not have fiber, so it is
important to keep having as much blended foods as possible.
How do I break the cleanse?
It is always best to break a fast gradually. Moving from a smoothie
or vegetable juice, to a salad is a good pace. We urge a gradual
progression to break a fast. Try to work your way back into your
regular eating habits gradually. Be gentle in your transition back to
the diet you wish to follow. Binging may reverse some of the work
you have accomplished on this program.
What if I get hungry?
It is common to get hungry during the first three days. By day
three your body will adjust and become satisfied with the process.
Drink water to fight your hunger, it really works
There is a seven-day menu plan and recipes for each of the three
levels. It is not necessary to follow the menu as gospel. It is
meant as a guideline. There is no calorie counting on this program.
You can eat or drink all you want. You can have snacks between
meals as long as they follow the level you are doing. You can
create your own menu, but you must make 3 basic commitments:
1. Avoid all animal products (i.e. dairy, eggs, chicken, meat and
fish). Non-animal based alternatives or vegan items may be
substituted
2. Read ingredients carefully (avoid all chemicals, fillers and
additives).
3. Keep an open mind.
Most of us have been exposed to an unhealthy food, poor
elimination, antibiotics, chlorinated water, stress, and other
pharmaceuticals (i.e. steroids, aspirin, Motrin, chemotherapy, etc.),
which negatively effect pro-biotic organisms. In a couple of days,
you may notice some gas, bloating and/or diarrhea this is a sign
that unfriendly bacteria, yeast and viruses are being evicted.
Your body will be releasing toxins into the blood stream in an
attempt to purge these harmful substances. The liver is the
treatment plant for the body. Among other functions it produces
hormones, builds proteins, metabolizes sugar and converts toxins
into a manageable metabolic waste. The liver has been working
90
91. over time in an attempt to keep up with our toxic lifestyles.
The cleanse will seem to pass quickly if you focus on just the daily
regimen. Adjust the menu to suit your needs. Again, there are no
calorie restrictions. Enjoy the process and realize your body is
tuning itself. Sometimes, it takes time to hit the right notes.
Action is the food and drink.
