BOARD CHAIR
Iowa Campus Compact (IACC) is a statewide association
of college and university presidents who are committed to
fulfilling the civic purposes of higher education by educating
students for active citizenship and building strong communities.
This is accomplished by integrating community service,
service-learning and community engagement opportunities
into student’s academic and co-curricular activities. IACC
provides members with events and programs that help to
build their capacity to institutionalize engagement.

“I believed then, and still do, that college
and university students have a great deal
of energy and enthusiasm that could be
productively utilized to meet community
needs. In addition, college students have
a great deal to learn by being active in the
community and being civically engaged.
Breaking out of the campus “bubble”
provides learning opportunities where
they can integrate their traditional
learning on campus with experiential
learning opportunities that can add value
to their education.”
Dr. Fred Waldstein, Wartburg College faculty
member and Iowa Campus Compact founder
“Iowa Campus Compact has
expanded my understanding of
the unique role that colleges and
universities play in the personal, civic,
and cognitive development of students.”
Cheri Doane, Director of
Community-Based Learning
at Central College and Iowa
Campus Compact founder
“Service-learning is a critical component of
undergraduate education. It help students
learn about themselves and what it means to
be a productive member of a community. Iowa
Campus Compact is a great vehicle for moving
higher education forward in multiple areas of
curriculum both collectively and individually.”
Les Garner, former Cornell College President
and Iowa Campus Compact founder

I am pleased to share this report with you. This document
captures the great work Iowa Campus Compact has
accomplished in the last ten years and highlights what is to
come. It has been my honor to serve as chair of the IACC
Board of Directors. The engagement work happening at all
levels on our campuses across the state is truly admirable.
I look forward to our continued work together as we build this
coalition to engage students as citizens and build communities.

4. Beginning in Fall 2013, Iowa Campus
Compact (IACC) is offering a unique
opportunity for faculty interested in
public scholarship, engagement and service-
learning. Fellows will receive ongoing training
and professional development in engaged
scholarship and teaching over the course of
a year and receive a stipend to implement
a service-learning or other engagement
project on their campus. The 2013-2014
program will be led by Senior Fellow,
Drake Unversity Professor Sally Beisser.
“I am excited for the challenge of uniting
faculty scholars from different Iowa
colleges and universities to recognize
and advance collaborative efforts to
build a culture of service-learning on
campus,” said Dr. Beisser. “This is a
unique opportunity to see the community
as a setting to serve, confront issues
and ideas, and reflect on the impact of
volunteerism to serve the greater good.”
Faculty interested in developing and
expanding their engaged scholarship
practice from all disciplines and
professional schools at IACC member
campuses are eligible to apply each year.

Also beginning in Fall 2013, each
member institution of Iowa Campus
Compact (IACC) will have the opportunity
to nominate two students to serve for an
academic year as Iowa Campus Compact
Civic Ambassadors.
Ambassadors will participate in leadership
development and networking opportunities
and receive support for planning civic
engagement and/or service opportunities
on their campuses. This new program is
designed to create student ambassadors
for Iowa Campus Compact and civic
engagement on member campuses,
capture the student voice for Iowa Campus
Compact in our planning processes and
enhance the leadership skills and civic
engagement understanding of students
engaged in service.
