- The blog of Law Technology News Editor Monica Bay. The Common Scold is named after a cause of action that originated in Pilgrim days, when meddlesome, argumentative, opinionated women who displeased the Puritan elders were punished by a brisk dunk in the local pond. Believe it or not, the tort lasted until 1972. Monica says the thought of those feisty women, not afraid of a little cold water, has always cheered me up and inspired me. Monica's blog certainly is feisty just like those women, with updates on legal technology news, and of course my favorite, the New York Yankees! The one thing I noticed and did not like is that there is no date displayed prominently so you know material is up to date, so I would ask the question just how current is it?
- Ben Stevens blog is devoted solely to using Macs in the practice of law. This blog focuses on two areas: (1) how Ben Stevens planned and implemented the move and (2) how he is using Mac software in his practice. Plus whatever else he might find interesting. This helpful resource is free, and joining is easy.
- Although this is billed as a social networking news site it contains hundreds of hidden tech gems. The website has scores of list aggregating hundreds of useful web tools, enhancements and utilities for websites, blogs, iPods, Gmail, Voice over internet protocol (VOIP), remote computer access, and many more. Founded in July 2005, Mashable is the world's largest blog focused exclusively on Web 2.0 and Social Networking news. With more than 5 million monthly pageviews, Mashable is the most prolific blog reviewing new Web sites and services, publishing breaking news on what's new on the web. Mashable will put your brand in front of the most tech-savvy early adopters, venture capitalists, entrepreneurs, influencers, Web 2.0 aficionados and technology journalists. - TimeBridge makes it simple to schedule a meeting with others. Just select a few dates for your meeting, and TimeBridge will send out emails to your attendees, asking them to indicate their availability on the TimeBridge site. Once everyone has responded TimeBridge schedules the meeting and sends out a confirmation email. The service also integrates with yoru Outlook or Google calendar.

- This is from the Annenberg Foundation, this web site monitors political advertising of presidential candidates to verify the accuracy of charges, facts and claims contained in the ads. It is eye-opening for sure! We are a nonpartisan, nonprofit "consumer advocate" for voters that aims to reduce the level of deception and confusion in U.S. politics. We monitor the factual accuracy of what is said by major U.S. political players in the form of TV ads, debates, speeches, interviews and news releases. Our goal is to apply the best practices of both journalism and scholarship, and to increase public knowledge and understanding. The Annenberg Political Fact Check is a project of the Annenberg Public Policy Center of the University of Pennsylvania. This WWW roadmap allows surfers to efficiently gain access to the far reaches of the net! - This amazing information aggregator is a quick and free way to find information about people. Not just contact information, but information about their business, career, etc. that can be found on the Internet. Not as complete as some fee-based services, but a great place to start any search for a witness, heir, or defendant! You can see I put my name in and two results came back and they are both actually me! They bill themselves as the premier business information search engine, with profiles on more than 45 million people and 5 million companies. ZoomInfo delivers fresh and organized information on industries, companies, people, products, services and jobs.

- I love this one and use it all the time when I am planning a vacation. It is one of the best websites to find up-to-the-minute travel information from fellow travelers. I especially like their "real-person" reviews of hotels, which have saved me and my husband from several traveling disasters, this includes reviews of cruises, cruise ships etc.
- TripIt acts as your personal travel agent, organizing your travel plans into a formatted itinerary. Just forward to TripIt the confirmation emails you receive from the airline, car rental agency, hotel, or other travel service -- TripIt will take all of the information and combine it into a fantastic looking itinerary, to which you can add maps, directions, photos, and more. TripIt itineraries are also easy to share with others. Anyone on LinkedIn will notice the use of TripIt by Pat Wagner among others. Though vacations are intended to be a time for creating a stress-free environment and enjoying some time off, they can quickly turn into another stressful situation. Most people will know what I mean when they remember the map shuffling, wrong turns and itinerary confusion. In other words, mass chaos! Though it is probably not possible to eliminate the stress of traveling, there are some effective tools that can help vacationers organize their travel information into a single, decidedly un-confusing plan. One such tool is a product called TripIt. All that the user has to do is provide a valid email address and choose a screen name and password. There is even an app for your iPhone.
- This is a great site for those of you with blogs or websites, Citebite allows you to link directly to a sentence or paragraph on a web page. Just paste the text you want to highlight into Citebite, and you will get a special URL that opens directly to your text selection and even highlights it. Your browser must have javascript for this site to work properly.
- You will not find a more interesting directory of Web 2.0 sites. The sites are displayed visually, but you can also select a particular tag (calendar, communication, wiki, etc.) to narrow down the choices. This is a great way to explore new and exciting sites. Today Go2web20 includes over 2,700 services and more are uploaded everyday. They also make sure to disable services that are no longer working and by doing this ensure a more useful and enjoyable experience when performing a search. They believe that this is a natural behavior and logical progress - not all the services that you see here will live forever, but they'll serve you for as long as they live
- CrossLoop is a free, simple way to easily share your screen with others, or vice versa. Once you have both downloaded the software, you can type in the other's access code to gain access to the others computer screen. This tool is great for viewing documents, diagrams, or other important legal materials; it is also good for providing "tech support" to those who need you to help them with computer problems. I can see a real use for this with elderly parents that might have difficulty knowing what to do and where to go on a computer or to even share photo albums and talk about the pictures as you are looking at them. CrossLoop opens up a whole new world of collaborative possibilities. People of any level of technical expertise can now remotely collaborate with others over the Internet. Many of the problems and frustrations associated with using computers can be solved if those who have the answer to a PC problem can quickly link to those who have the problem.
- Want to know when your iPod is due to be replaced? Just plug in your serial number and answer a few questions about its use, and this site will give you an idea of how much longer your iPod will last. The red arrow shows where you put your serial number in and then just click go!
- This online notebook is a great way to save and organize the information you find on the internet. You can highlight snippets or even whole web pages and save them to your notebook, which can be shared with others or printed out. My thought is this might be a great way to organize research projects. Customers use Zoho to run their business processes, manage their information and be more productive while at the office or on the go, without having to worry about expensive or outdated hardware or software. To date, Zoho has launched 19 different applications — from CRM to Mail, Reports, and Wikis. Zoho has received numerous awards, including an InfoWorld 2009 "Product of the Year" award, a 2008 PC World "25 Most Innovative Products Award" and a 2007 TechCrunch "Best Enterprise Start-up. Just supply a saliva sample and a check for a $399 (it has come down from $1000) to decode your DNA and unlock your distant family ancestry. Here is how it works, in four easy steps (not that I have done this): 1. Order a kit ($399 USD) from their online store . 2. Claim your kit , spit into the tube, and send it to the lab. 3. Their CLIA-certified lab analyzes your DNA in 6-8 weeks. 4. Log in and start exploring your genome.
- And no this is not me, although she appears to have red hair it is not my avitar! So you are ready to end your relationship but don't quite have the words? Just sign up at the site and answer a few questions. BreakupEmail does the rest, sending an email to your soon to be former significant other that will leave no question that the relationship is over. Break Up Email is a website for those of who are lazy, po'd, or evil enough to break up via email. The site, sprinkled with tongue-in-cheek comments, asks disgruntled soon-to-be exes to fill out a form describing reasons for the “dumping,” decide whether to stay friends, select a few one-liners, and vocalize whether they intend to ever see each other again. Options for breaking up run the gamut; from body odor issues to poor sexual performance to “I’ve lost that lovin’ feeling.” The final product sounds like it was written by a fourteen-year-old valley girl, but this most likely a target audience. The service is free, and the break up email is not sent directly from the site.
- This is a free, on demand Internet TV service from NBC and FOX which is meant to compete with YouTube when it comes to TV shows. It has really grown over the last year and now includes movies as well as TV shows. The movies are not real current and most I never heard of but that might not be saying much. You can see you pick from popular episodes, in the case of TV, or popular clips. There are also featured videos. The same is true for the movie side of it, popular movies, documentaries, you can see trailers and you do have the option to browse. You do have to create an account to use the site.
- I actually entered a search here for evergreen which you can see where I have the red arrow. Below it are the limericks that come up. If you wanted a limerick with a certain work this is where you would go to find it. There are more than 47,000 limericks at this site, the goal of which is to write at least one limerick for every work in the English language. They still have a ways to go as I did put a number of words in and got no results. It is fun and might be one of those things you use for a National Library Week quiz.
- And for those of you familiar with the jewelry this is not what I am referring to. This Pandora relates to music. You can get free customized internet radio from the Music Genome Project. When was the last time you fell in love with a new artist or song? At Pandora, they have a single mission: To play only music you'll love. - I do not know about the rest of you but when I buy something on the internet I really dislike passing over that "enter coups code here" and leaving it blank -- I wish I could get a discount on my online purchase. Now with RetailMeNot you can enter a coupon code at just about any retail site you visit. Just enter the name of the site (Amazon, Victoria's Secret, Papa Johns Pizza, etc.) and you will get a listing of recent codes that will give you discounts on certain types of orders. It is a great way to save money on your online purchases.
- This site is a must for the sports fanatic in our audience, yours truly definitely included! Just let RU watching this know where you live and your cable/satellite network, and the sports you want to follow. RUWT will notify you by email or text message of sporting events you won't want to miss, i.e. a no-hitter in the making, and upset of a ranked team, or an overtime nail-biter. I have seen quite a few of those between my Yankees and the Boston Red Sox! I did sign up and it was fast and easy.
