4. EARLY MUSIC CAREER
Michael Jacksons music career began with the record label Motown. His band The
Jackson 5 became Motown’s best selling group.
The genre of their music was very diverse ranging between: Rock and Roll,
Rhythm and blues, soul music, disco, funk and pop rock.
Some of their hits include: ‘ABC’, ‘The love you save’, ‘Ill be there’, ‘I want you back’.
The initial target audience was African Americans, although as they grew in
popularity and racial barriers began to break The Jackson five and Motown started
to hit mainstream, their target audience was now extremely broad.
5. SOLO CAREER
Michael Jackson became an extremely
successful solo artist with his second solo
album ‘off the wall’ released in 1979. It
featured a blend of pop and funk with
tracks such as "Don't Stop 'til You Get
Enough and, ‘Rock with You’. With this
album his music became more commercial
and synthetic, as opposed to the youthful
organic sound he was previously producing.
Michael Jackson became more known as the ‘King of
Pop’ once his career took off as a solo artist.
6. Late career
Michael Jackson’s greatest
achievements include: multiple
Guinness World Records; 13 Grammy
Awards, as well as the Grammy
Legend Award and the Grammy
Lifetime Achievement Award; 26
American Music Awards—more than
any other artist—including the "Artist
of the Century" and "Artist of the
1980s"; 13 number-one singles in the
United States during his solo career,
more than any other male artist in
the Hot 100 era; and the estimated
sale of over 400 million records
worldwide.
Evidently Michael Jackson’s
campaign was one of the
greatest music campaigns
of all time. Michael Jackson
is one of the few artists to
have been admitted into
the Rock and Roll Hall of
Fame twice. He was also
inducted into the
Songwriters Hall of Fame
and the Dance Hall of Fame
as the first and only dancer
from pop and rock music.

8. How Keith Negus’s
ideas apply to this artist
Organic vs Synthetic
Michael began his career as an organic artist alongside his brothers forming the ‘Jackson 5’. As Michael
Jackson began to emerge as a solo artist in the 1970’s this organic, authentic image, began to shift to a more
commercial, synthetic image to appeal to a more world-wide audience.
Absent & present
When Michael Jackson was alive he was
constantly in the public eye. His whole
personal life was always broadcasted and
advertised worldwide. This made him seem
present to his fans as they were always
aware of what he was doing. However, due to
his immense popularity he was in fact
untouchable, to his fans. His fans could never
literally meet him; only in concerts which
only gave them the illusion that they were in
touch with him and his music.
12. Early music career
Calvin Cordozar Broadus Jr. better known by the name Snoop Dogg has been in the
music industry since 1992. Back then Snoop was discovered by the popular rap
group “N.W.A” by Dr.Dre. Since then all members of the group have had several
smash albums, especially Dr.Dre, Ice Cube and Snoop Dogg.
Some of his biggest hits in the late 1980s and
early 1990s include: "Nuthin' But a "G" Thang",
"Gin and Juice", "Who Am I (What's My
Name)?"
and many more.
13. CAREER AFTER N.W.A
Snoop Dogg was still extremely successful with his
career after N.W.A, he has had several platinum
songs. The most notable ones being “Drop It Like It's
Hot” and “Sweat”.
His music developed from exclusive hip/hop and rap
to a more commercial style.
As his popularity grew, he produced a more globally
popular sound, collaborated with pop artists such as
Pharrell Williams and Bruno Mars.
14. How Keith Negus’s
ideas apply to this artist
Organic vs Synthetic
Snoop dogg, like most rappers is a very synthetic artist. His image is a crucial part of his music career. The
gangster lifestyle is what makes him likeable by certain target audiences, like teenagers who aspire to have his
lifestyle.
Absent & present
Snoop Dogg is very much an ‘absent’ celebrity.
Similarly to Michael Jackson, Snoop Dogg is
frequently in the public eye as he has such a
strong and noticeable image, therefore he
appears to be relatable and present to his fans.
However, in terms of him actually responding
to things like fan mail and social media, are
very little. This makes Snoop Dogg an absent
celebrity. He also often leaves gaps between
releasing albums and singles which distances
himself from his fans more so than someone
like Michael Jackson.
