During World War 1, many soldiers suffered from infectious diseases like influenza, trench fever, and typhoid fever. Medical camps were set up behind the front lines in buildings like factories and churches to treat large numbers of wounded soldiers. Doctors at the time had only brief medical training and were aware of basic hygiene. With many male doctors at war, women played a larger role in medicine and treatment of the sick during this period.
