2. Reinforcement
The process by which a stimulus increases
the probability that a preceding behavior
will be repeated.
3. Positive Reinforcement
A stimulus added to the environment that brings
about the increase in a preceding response.
Example: A father gives candy to his son after he
picks up his toys.
4. Negative Reinforcement
An unpleasant stimulus whose removal leads to an
increase in the probability that a preceding
response will be repeated in the future.
Example: Class is boring so you doodle on your
paper or fall asleep.
5. Punishment
A stimulus that decreases the probability
that a previous behavior will occur again.
6. Positive Punishment
Punishment that weakens a response through the
application of an unpleasant stimulus.
Example: Getting a speeding ticket and having to
complete 48 hours of community service.
7. Negative Punishment
Punishment that consists of the removal of
something pleasant.
Example: Taking away your kids car keys for being
home after curfew.
