This week we begin our most significant writing, emphasizing themes . We have been practicing so we can get to this point, doing more of what historians actually do. As you know, historians do not memorize facts. They see trends throughout time, and use these trends to understand both the past and the present. A historical theme is a trend, presented as an interpretive thesis, but supported by evidence from several different eras instead of just one or two. A number of weeks throughout the semester, we have posted evidence from one particular time-frame or era on a Primary Sources Board, but our writing this week must include evidence from multiple eras. Yes - the work you do here may be considered as the outline for your final essay, so long as you are happy with your subject! Themes are narrow enough to have a point of view, even though they are broad enough to cover several eras. They show a repeating trend, rather than progress over time. One way to begin a theme is to focus on a topic area, such as fashion, sexuality, class differences, cloth-making technology, the role of philosophy, ways in which literature reflects society, sports, games, furniture design, domestic architecture, dancing, political conflict, holiday celebrations, religious texts, expressions of spirituality, mass communication - the possibilities are endless. Format For this assignment we start with a theme (in bold text), and use six sources in pairs with a topic sentence (in italics ) that covers them both. The format will be like an essay, with no numbers or letters: I. Historical theme II. Topic sentence that supports the theme A. Primary source #1 with explanation B. Primary source #2 with explanation III. Topic sentence that supports the theme A. Primary source #3 with explanation B. Primary source #4 with explanation IV. Topic sentence that supports the theme A. Primary source #1 with explanation B. Primary source #2 with explanation V. Brief conclusion Avoid problems with themes Here's a list of common problems to avoid for themes: • The progressive theme problem. The theme features advancement or improvement over time, when it needs to focus on a repeating trend. • The "throughout history" problem. The theme should not use phrases like "throughout history" or "across the ages". • The "and" problem. The theme should not try to cover more bases by using "and", unless everything in it is proven in every paragraph. • The "or" problem. The theme should not contain "or", which encourages paragraphs that focus on only part of the theme. • The so broad it's obvious problem. This is similar to the big, factual thesis problem. Writing assignment instructions (70 points): Create an outline with a theme and three topic sentences, each supported by two fully-cited primary sources from various Primary Sources Boards, with a brief explanation of how each source supports the topic. Primary and Secondary Source Comparison Assignment Instuctions and Rubric It is important that you be able to analyze sources that are both Primary and Secondary for this course and future courses. This assignment focuses on that skill. Tasks: 1 The following primary sources relate to this unit. Choose one of these primary sources and read it for at least 30 minutes or to conclusion. All primary documents are found at MyLabsPlus. Access MyLabsPlus from the Course Home page. Primary documents are found under the "Chapter Resources" for the chapter referenced after the document title. (Please note, none of the primary documents are found in the ebook itself or on the Internet. These are specific document excerpts.) 1 Machiavelli's The Prince - Chapter 11 2 "Renaissance Artists" - Chapter 11 3 "Letter from the "New World" by Christopher Columbus - Chapter 12 4 "The New Laws of the Indies for the Good Treatment and Preservation of the Indians" - Chapter 12 5 "Calvin on Predestination" - Chapter 13 6 Martin Luther, "Sermon at Castle Pleissenberg" - Chapter 13 7 Sir Thomas More, Utopia – Chapter 13 2 Find a secondary source (book, article, essay, etc) which discusses, explains, or comments on the issue or event in the primary source you chose. For example, if your primary source is Darwin’s writing on the origin of the species, you would look for a secondary source which comments on Darwin’s ideas (either positively or negatively). Read that secondary source for at least 30 minutes. 3 Compare the secondary source’s interpretation of the historical event or topic to the way that event or topic is presented in the primary source you chose. 4 Here are three questions you should answer while evaluating the primary source and secondary source documents you chose in essay format: 1 Who was the author and who was their audience? 2 What was the purpose of the document or motive for writing it? Does the writer have an obvious bias? 3 When was this document written, and what was the effect of the document on history, or (if it is the secondary source) how did the secondary source affect your view of this topic or event? 5 Summarize what you learned about the event from both the primary and secondary sources you chose. 6 Submit your completed assignment to the Dropbox by the scheduled due date. Primary and Secondary Source Comparison Assignment Rubric: Task Maximum Points Included bibliographic information at the end of the document for primary and secondary sources /8 Thoughtfully and thoroughly answered at least the three above questions in your evaluation of the primary and secondary sources /42 Summarized what you learned from comparing the two documents /25 Total /75 Josephine Smithe HIS 101 December 23, 2014 Primary and Secondary Source Comparison Lyrical Ballads The primary source selected for this comparison was Lyrical Ballads by Samuel Taylor Coleridge and William Wordsworth. This source was first published in 1798 and then republ.

Q1: Could Europe in 1550 be called a “new world”? Why or why not? Q2: Create a character for yourself who is on their deathbed in 1550 and looking back on their life. What structured their life and what changes did they witness? Be sure to think about where they were living and what class they belonged to. Q3: What changed early modern Europe more: art and ideas, war, or disease and environmental change? Q4: How did the Renaissance, European territorial expansion, and early religious reform demonstrate an urge to “purify” European society or return it to a golden age? Did this urge produce change rather than simple reform? ** There are 4 questions in total, each of the question should answer as essay format. The length of each question will be around 2/3 single space. As long as it has all the requirement from below. Try to use examples from the readings, discussing a specific person, text, or event helps (evidence!) provide a clear thesis statement in your introduction. A thesis needs to stake out your position and should be followed by a sentence briefly summarizing how you intend to prove it. Use at least three examples as evidence for your argument. Devote a separate paragraph (at least) to each point. All general statements need to be followed by specific examples or details to elaborate the point. You should offer a brief description of your example to establish the context for your analysis. Provide who, what, when, where, and how/why. You should explicitly tell me how this supports your argument. You should provide a transition to your next example by showing its connection to the current example. Ex: “The emergence of new religions in the early modern period most clearly demonstrates that it was a new world because [x]. In [date], [person] called for major reforms in the Catholic Church. [explain their reforms/ ideas]. [explain how this created something new]. [perhaps mention other reformers with similar ideas]. At the same time as these religious changes, [y] also created a new world in Europe.” *I have upload a word file that has the outline for the questions. You can use the information in the word file or your knowledge from early modern Europe. .

Reading Journal for World History Your journal includes reflections and observations on the reading. This is an opportunity to share your perspective on the topics you find most interesting. You may also want to share your insights on the type of questions historians address and how we attempt to understand societies. Starting with Chapter 2 you will notice a particular feature called “Sources from the Past”. Please use two or more of these sections each time you turn in your journal. Put the title of the document in bold so I will know which documents you read. For example, you might have read selections from the Epic of Gilgamesh or Hammurabi's Laws . Relate the document to the events in the chapter. I also encourage you to write about pictures, maps, or other features you find in the reading. You do not have to write about every chapter. Usually you get the best results if you take on one or two topics each time you turn in the journal. It helps if you label the topics. You may use any style, but please divide your writing into paragraphs. You can earn 50 points for two and a half solid pages (double spaced) of quality writing. You are welcome to write more and you can earn up to 60 points for each time it is assigned. I mainly consider how much you have thought about topics in the reading and how you use the documents or other evidence available in the chapters. Suggested Journal Prompts Here are some prompts that you might want to use: 1. What did you find most interesting or surprising (in a particular section)? How does the material relate to what you learned earlier, perhaps in other classes? 2. What trends do you seen in this chapter that have shaped the world we live in today? 3. If you did a movie set in the time period of this chapter, what would be the key elements in your movie? Tell how you imagine some of the characters, and what challenges they would face. 4. Describe the time span covered in this chapter. How does the span relate to key events? Why do you think the authors chose this span of time? Would you arrange it differently? 5. How might we understand the history differently from someone living in the time period? Do you think people will react to this chapter differently, depending on their cultural background? 6. When examining a document: What is the historical context? What do we know about the source? How can the document help us understand the society in that time and place? 16 hours ago Exam VI (Chapters 19-21 and Themes) Please choose four of the topics below. Write four essays, with about 1.5 pages of writing for each essay. Please also include one or more pictures with each essay. Please make sure you answer the questions in a clear and concise way, with short to medium sized paragraphs. You may use information from our course reading and also from the Websites and Videos section. The first four questions relate to Chapters 19-21. The last four questions relate to the course as a whole; ...
