- The following tips need to be considered in the context or YOUR course: Audience Topic Objectives Outcomes etc.
- Moodle has so many features and options it’s easy to become over awed with them and start from a software perspective. Don’t do that! Know your tools but ALWAYs start from the learning perspective “What do I need to achieve here”. The selection of modules etc. becomes much easier then AND they are much more likely to be effective. Don’t put that cart before the horse…
- Open up massive new potential of your courses. Understand the functionality and match that to your need(s) it doesn't matter what the Moodle module is called that you use, so; Give activities names that reference their purpose in the course not their software name. Think outside of the box. Not: “Wiki for your reflections” – but “Reflective journal Not: Module 1 Assignment – but “Seaweed project submission zone”
- Careful! Noise not signal? Use HTML editor styles Keep it simple 3 - 4 consistent styles User headings
- Do you work with mind readers? Courses with lots of links and no instructions or guidance don’t help your learners much. Consider labels on the course page to help make sense of what to do. If you never meet them you can’t point to the screen and say click her when you get home tonight. Make your activity name links descriptive. Indent where useful to break up the page.
- This can be hard to achieve sometimes, but work at it. Keep labels SORT and CONCISE Use Folder / Directory resource if you have lots of files – 1 link, many files Consider non-standard Book module – 1 link, many pages.
- Do you feel like this?? Are you spending too much time creating/re-creating/updating materials in your courses? Still trying to get everything online in a PERFECT state before you go live? What are you learners doing? Could they be discussing/sharing/collaborating/researching/reflecting in online activities? Are these normally quick to set up? (Yes) Are they effective/challenging/thought provoking? (Normally, Yes).
- Moodle 2 has some great conditional activity options that can make course admin chores a thing of the past. Great! Use them where you can. Do you need to be flexible sometimes? Are you a professional teacher/trainer/facilitator/instructor who expects to be able to use their own judgement in managing a course? Be careful that you don’t tie things up to the extent that you lose the ability to flex to meet the needs of individuals or the wider group.
