The discussion on criminalisation of aviation incidents and accidents shows the concerns about the intrusion by law enforcement in the all-important effort to enhancing safety in aviation. It also reflects a tendency to use “criminalisation” as the epitome of misdirected and unwarranted activities by the judiciary and to argue that the safety domain should be further protected from any action by the prosecution. Invoking real or alleged criminalisation of aviation incidents or accidents as a justification for protective legislative action does not really work. What is needed now is an equilibrium between two equally relevant goals: aviation safety and the administration of justice. The EUROCONTROL Just Culture Task Force has now developed a Model Policy for National Prosecutors based on UK and Dutch precedents that introduces voluntary restrictions for the types of offences that would result in a criminal investigation after a serious incident or an accident. This and other initiatives to establish a true Just Culture will be further discussed.

Intra-vehicular wireless sensor networks (IVWSN) is a promising new research area that can provide part cost, assembly, maintenance savings and fuel efficiency through the elimination of the wires, and enable new sensor technologies to be integrated into vehicles, which would otherwise be impossible using wired means, such as Intelligent Tire. However, there are currently no detailed models describing the UWB channel for IVWSN making it difficult to design a suitable communication system. We analyze the small- scale and large-scale statistics of the UWB channel beneath the chassis of a vehicle by collecting data at various locations with 81 measurement points per transmitter-receiver pair for different types of vehicles including the scenarios of turning the engine on and movement on the road. Moreover, the close interaction of communication with control systems, strict reliability, energy efficiency and delay requirements in such harsh environment containing a large number of reflectors operating at extreme temperatures are distinguishing properties of this network. We investigate optimal power control, rate adaptation and scheduling for UWB-based IVWSN for one Electronic Control Unit (ECU) and multiple ECU cases.

The technical university Berlin is located in Berlin with campus locations across the city. The locations Ernst-Reuter-Platz, Severingelände/PTZ, Kaiserin-Augusta-Allee, Wedding Hum-boldthain, Wedding Seestraße, Steglitz-Zehlendorf and Campus EUREF were analyzed in re-gard to available mobility options such as local public transport and micromobility sharing ser-vices. It was concluded that it is in some cases not possible to travel from one location to anoth-er in the time available between two courses. To determine the need for an own micromobility service operated by the TU Berlin, university members were surveyed. Within the scope of this thesis, the term micromobility refers to light vehicles for personal transport which are permitted for road transport in Germany and are currently used in sharing services. This includes: • Bicycles • Pedelecs • E-Scooters (footbikes) • larger E-Scooters (electric motor scooters) The analyses and survey revealed an existing need and interest in the use of an own Micromo-bility service at the TU Berlin.

This technical presentation is focused on the usability gap of the Geospatial Reference Information compiled and published by the SDIs. We present a case study on Land Occupation databases which use an object-oriented data model following the INSPIRE technical specifications. In this case the usability gap consists on the object-relational impedance mismatch. This happens when an object-oriented data model has to be stored in a relational database. We performed a computational experiment for testing if there are any benefits in storing land use (LU) and land cover (LC) data in a document store database. In this experiment we used the LU/LC database of Spain (SIOSE). The results show that there are some benefits in terms of throughput capacity and response times. Based on these results we propose some opportunities for achieving even better results. This experiment was performed using the dockers containerization technology, so the experiment is completely reproducible in less than eight hours (it took weeks to prepare the experiment) by executing a few lines of code. As a suggestion, the dockers technology could be used as a way for sharing GRD databases with companies and advanced users willing to use this data for research or business. This research is going to be continued in a research project starting in 2017 and funded by the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness.

There are many ways to reduce the risk of cycling accidents, such as building separate cycling infrastructure, increasing the visibility of cyclists and reducing the speed of cars where cyclists and cars share the same road. The SAFECYCLE project, which is co-funded by the European Commission – DG MOVE, took a different approach. It investigated how ICT can be used to increase the safety of cyclists. This is newsletter #3, the final newsletter of this research project that was finalized in November 2012. Check out more publications and presentations on www.safecycle.eu

In the thrilling conclusion to 2023, ransomware groups had a banner year, really outdoing themselves in the "make everyone's life miserable" department. LockBit 3.0 took gold in the hacking olympics, followed by the plucky upstarts Clop and ALPHV/BlackCat. Apparently, 48% of organizations were feeling left out and decided to get in on the cyber attack action. Business services won the "most likely to get digitally mugged" award, with education and retail nipping at their heels. Hackers expanded their repertoire beyond boring old encryption to the much more exciting world of extortion. The US, UK and Canada took top honors in the "countries most likely to pay up" category. Bitcoins were the currency of choice for discerning hackers, because who doesn't love untraceable money?

Created by Mozilla Research in 2012 and now part of Linux Foundation Europe, the Servo project is an experimental rendering engine written in Rust. It combines memory safety and concurrency to create an independent, modular, and embeddable rendering engine that adheres to web standards. Stewardship of Servo moved from Mozilla Research to the Linux Foundation in 2020, where its mission remains unchanged. After some slow years, in 2023 there has been renewed activity on the project, with a roadmap now focused on improving the engine’s CSS 2 conformance, exploring Android support, and making Servo a practical embeddable rendering engine. In this presentation, Rakhi Sharma reviews the status of the project, our recent developments in 2023, our collaboration with Tauri to make Servo an easy-to-use embeddable rendering engine, and our plans for the future to make Servo an alternative web rendering engine for the embedded devices industry.
