The Magna Carta was a charter of liberties issued in 1215 that limited the power of King John of England. It established that the King was not above the law and guaranteed rights of the church and nobles. While laws have changed, the Magna Carta influenced democratic legal systems today and some of its clauses on liberties, imprisonment, and justice are still in use in England and formed the basis for law in Canada as a former British colony.
