Ozone depletion from chlorofluorocarbons released into the atmosphere is a threat to both aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems as well as human health. The ozone layer normally protects life on Earth by absorbing harmful UV radiation, but chlorine released from CFCs destroys ozone molecules. This leads to increased UV rays damaging phytoplankton and aquatic organisms, impairing plant growth and DNA on land. In humans, higher UV exposure causes skin cancer, premature aging, eye disorders and immune system damage.
