Processes and Methods Involved in Undertaking Communication Questions: 1. What is a Communication? 2. Who are involved in a Communication? 3. Why is it important? Communication As A Discipline Communication - Is an academic discipline examining communication between people. Human Interaction - Is regarded as a basis on which interpersonal relationships, groups and teams, organizations, communities, and cultures are constructed. - Is aimed at developing knowledge about interactional processes and communicative behavior - Focuses on contacts and bonds between people, both in private and public contexts, and both face-to-face and mediated through various communication technologies. The focus on professional expertise in communication is: interpersonal relations, small group processes and organizational communication, as well as social, contextual, and cultural factors, impacting communication behavior, communication technologies, media, administration, politics, and cultural move. Communication Setting, Methods, Processed and Tools Settings of Communication (Sampa Elias, 2017) - - Refer to the physical surroundings of a communication event which may be made up of the location where the communication occurs, environmental conditions, time of the day, or day of the week, as well as proximity of the communicators. (Alberts, Nnakayama & Martin 2007) Process of Communication - Accounts for what happens between the source of the message and the recipient, - It is the skills employed in giving and receiving information and conveying our ideas and opinions to those around us. Methods of Communication Involve the: - Verbal such as the sound, tone of the voice, and language. • Aural like listening and hearing • Non-Verbal which may be through facial expression and body language • Written Non-Verbal which may be through facial expression and body language • Visual like the signs, the symbols, illustration and picture Tools in Communication - Include all that we use in both communicating with others and interpreting the information received from others. - They range from the language in all forms, from the tone of voice to performing, reenacting, storytelling, interviewing, television, telephone/cellphone, movie radio, photographs, digital and social platforms and the internet. 5 communication settings that find application in the discipline of social science According to: Sampa Elias (2017) 1. Government Setting - It is an instrument through which the will of people of a particular state is expressed, formulated, and carried out. - Relies on mass media to disseminate public information and propaganda. 2. Private Sector Setting - Refers to organizations operating businesses in the country which are involved in providing public services in the form of creating employment opportunities for the people but are not considered as a government. - Operates the basis of investments and profits 3. Civil Society Setting - - Refers to non-gov

Running head: LEADING CHANGE 1 LEADING CHANGE 3 Leading Change: An Analysis of the necessary leadership strengths to implement Kotter’s Eight-Step Heart of Change Introduction When someone is asked to think of a great leader and the strengths that individual posses, there are many different descriptions that may come to mind. The research conducted by Gallup Scientists which was reported in Strengths Based Leadership by Tom Rath and Barry Conchie, suggests four main areas to describe leadership strengths: executing, influencing, relationship building, and strategic thinking which have thirty-four total combined sub-descriptors (24). As change is becoming a common practice among all businesses around the world, we must find and utilize these strengths in all leadership teams. A Social Identity Theory of Leadership Michael A. Hogg School of Psychology University of Queensland A social identity theory of leadership is described that views leadership as a group process generated by social categorization and prototype-based depersonalization processes associated with social identity. Group identification, as self-categorization, constructs an intragroup prototypicality gradient that invests the most prototypical member with the appearance of having influence; the appearance arises because members cognitively and behaviorally conform to the prototype. The appearance of influence becomes a reality through depersonalized social attraction processes that make followers agree and comply with the leader’s ideas and suggestions. Consensual social attraction also imbues the leader with apparent status and creates a sta- tus-based structural differentiation within the group into leader(s) and followers, which has characteristics of unequal status intergroup relations. In addition, a funda- mental attribution process constructs a charismatic leadership personality for the leader, which further empowers the leader and sharpens the leader–follower status differential. Empirical support for the theory is reviewed and a range of implications discussed, including intergroup dimensions, uncertainty reduction and extremism, power, and pitfalls of prototype-based leadership. Over the past 25 years social psychology has placed relatively little emphasis on the study of leadership. This is probably associated with the well-documented decline during the 1960s and 1970s of interest in small group research, the associated ascendency of social cognition, the European emphasis on large scale inter- group relations, and the “outsourcing” of small group and leadership research to organizational and manage- ment departments (for historical overviews, see Abrams & Hogg, 1998; Hogg & Abrams, 1999; Jones, 1998; McGrath, 1997; Moreland, Hogg, & Hains, 1994; Sanna & Parks, 1997). In recent years, however, the social identity perspec- tive has begun to provide an integrative conceptual fo- cus for a revival of interest among social psychologists in group phenomena and for a dynamic linkage of social cognitive and intergroup processes (Hogg & Abrams, 1999; Moreland et al., 1994). This has generated social identity analyses of a diverse range of phenomena (e.g., Abrams & Hogg, 1990, 1999; Capozza & Brown, 2000; Ellemers, Spears, & Doosje, 1999; Hogg & Abrams, 1988; Robinson, 1996; J. C. Turner, Hogg, Oakes, Reicher, & Wetherell, 1987; Worchel, Morales, Páez, & Deschamps, 1998) and has provided a social cognitive framework for social psychology to reexamine leader- ship as a group process.
