Fuzzy net works using a multidimensional view of data have become very popular in both business and science in recent years. Fuzzy net works for fuzzy purposes such as medicine and bio-chemistry1 pose several great challenges to existing fuzzy net work technology. Fuzzy net works usually use pre-aggregated data to ensure fast query response. However, pre-aggregation cannot be used in practice if the dimension structures or the relationships between facts and dimensions are irregular. A technique for overcoming this limitation and some experimental results are presented. Queries over fuzzy fuzzy net works often need to reference data that is external to the fuzzy net work, e.g., data that is too complex to be handled by current fuzzy net work technology, data that is â€owned†by other organizations, or data that is updated frequently. This paper presents a federation architecture that allows the integration of multidimensional warehouse data with complex external data.

Co-authorship is the norm in most branches of science. With an increasing number of individuals claiming authorship to the same article, however, it is less clear what being an author actually means; i.e. what contributions merit the authorship. In this paper I present the results of an analysis of author contribution statements published in Nature Neuroscience; the purpose was to investigate what type of contributions merit authorship, and what happens to the composition of the author team when it increases in size. I classified all tasks according to a scheme suggested by Davenport & Cronin (2001); core author tasks, middle layer tasks, and outer layer tasks. The results show that the largest share of authorship is core authors, but that a substantial share of the authors belong to the outer layer. An analysis of changes in the composition of author teams as they increase in size revealed that the increase in team size was mainly driven by an increase in middle layer authors, indicating a process of functional differentiation in author teams due to the increasing complexity of the work tasks.

Abstract: The rise of data science has been largely fueled by the promise of changing the business landscape - enhancing one's competitive advantage, increasing business optimization and efficiency, and ultimately delivering a better bottom-line. This promise reaches across sectors as machine learning methods are getting better, data access continues to grow, and computation power is easily accessible. However, because the practice of doing data science can be expensive, there is a danger that this so-called promise of data science may only be available to the most well-resourced organizations with sophisticated data capabilities and staff. For the past five years, DataKind has been working to ensure social change organizations too have access to data science, teaming them up with data scientists to build machine learning and artificial intelligence solutions that aim to reduce human suffering. In doing so, DataKind has learned what it takes to apply data science in the social sector and the many applications it has for creating positive change in the world. This session presents DataKind projects showcasing the wide range of applications for ML/AI for social good. From using satellite imagery and remote sensing techniques to detect wheat farm boundaries to protect livelihoods in Ethiopia, to leveraging NLP to automate the time consuming process of synthesizing findings from academic studies to inform conservation efforts and to classifying text records to better understand human rights conditions across the world to using machine learning to reduce traffic fatalities in U.S. cities, learn about some of the latest breakthroughs and findings in the data science for social good space and learn how you can get involved

Panel 1: Beyond the Construct: New Forms of Measurement This panel presents new views of what assessment can be and new species of big data that push our understanding for what can be used in evidentiary arguments. Marcia Linn, Lydia Liu from UC Berkeley and ETS discuss continuous assessment of science and new kinds of constructs that relate to collaboration and student reasoning. John Byrnes from SRI International discusses text and other semi-structured data sources and different methods of analysis. [A talk presented at Oak Ridge National Laboratory on October 15, 2015] We have made much progress over the past decade toward harnessing the collective power of IT resources distributed across the globe. In big-science projects in high-energy physics, astronomy, and climate, thousands work daily within virtual computing systems with global scope. But we now face a far greater challenge: Exploding data volumes and powerful simulation tools mean that many more--ultimately most?--researchers will soon require capabilities not so different from those used by such big-science teams. How are we to meet these needs? Must every lab be filled with computers and every researcher become an IT specialist? Perhaps the solution is rather to move research IT out of the lab entirely: to develop suites of science services to which researchers can dispatch mundane but time-consuming tasks, and thus to achieve economies of scale and reduce cognitive load. I explore the past, current, and potential future of large-scale outsourcing and automation for science, and suggest opportunities and challenges for today’s researchers. I use examples from Globus and other projects to demonstrate what can be achieved.

New learning technologies seem likely to transform much of science, as they are already doing for many areas of industry and society. We can expect these technologies to be used, for example, to obtain new insights from massive scientific data and to automate research processes. However, success in such endeavors will require new learning systems: scientific computing platforms, methods, and software that enable the large-scale application of learning technologies. These systems will need to enable learning from extremely large quantities of data; the management of large and complex data, models, and workflows; and the delivery of learning capabilities to many thousands of scientists. In this talk, I review these challenges and opportunities and describe systems that my colleagues and I are developing to enable the application of learning throughout the research process, from data acquisition to analysis.

Post 1: We all know that our era belongs to technology; we are very much depending on technology. Data is everywhere, for every second lot of data is producing around us. In order to handle all these huge data we are relying on information technology to make use of the data. Below are the most essential directions for the information delivery The Internet of things. Wireless communications and radio frequency identification (RFID) product tags will be used in every organization in the future days to track the physical objects (car parts, etc) as they are moving through the supply chain. Already Walmart started conducting large-scale trials with RFID with hundreds of its major suppliers. In future RFID replace the universal code (Langton 2004). As the usage of technologies are continuously increasing, so organizations will be able to track and they can remotely control the status of everything from the freshness of lettuce between the field and the store to the location of the hospital suppliers. Even though this technology is almost ready for prime time, most organizations are nowhere near ready to cope with making sense of such a large influx of information; this will be one of the biggest challenges of the future (Smith and Konsynski 2003). Networkcentric operations: The improvement of the standardizing communication network protocols such as network devices, high- speed data will provide to access the data to collect, distribute, create and exploit very fast. There are three critical elements which must be in place to achieve this goal: Sensor grids. Small sensor devices are connected to the computers to filter different types of data, highlighting areas and anomalies to which the organization should pay attention ((Watson et al. 2010). High- quality visual information. Along with all the sophisticated modeling and the simulation capabilities and the displaying the technology, high- quality visualized information will provide dramatically create better awareness about the market place, operations and the environmental impact. In order to handle all these huge data we are relying on information technology to make use of the data. Below are the most essential directions for the information delivery The Internet of things. Wireless communications and radio frequency identification (RFID) product tags will be used in every organization in the future days to track the physical objects (car parts, etc) as they are moving through the supply chain. Already Walmart started conducting large-scale trials with RFID with hundreds of its major suppliers. In future RFID replace the universal code (Langton 2004). As the usage of technologies are continuously increasing, so organizations will be able to track and they can remotely control the status of everything from the freshness of lettuce between the field and the store to the location of the hospital suppliers. Even though this technology is almost ready for prime time, most organizations are nowhere near ready to cope with making sense of such a large influx of information; this will be one of the biggest challenges of the future (Smith and Konsynski 2003). Networkcentric operations: The improvement of the standardizing communication network protocols such as network devices, high- speed data will provide to access the data to collect, distribute, create and exploit very fast. There are three critical elements which must be in place to achieve this goal: Sensor grids. Small sensor devices are connected to the computers to filter different types of data, highlighting areas and anomalies to which the organization should pay attention ((Watson et al. 2010). Typically in predictive data analysis challenges, participants are provided a dataset and asked to make predictions. Participants include with their prediction the scripts/code used to produce it. Challenge administrators validate the winning model by reconstructing and running the source code. Often data cannot be provided to participants directly, e.g. due to data sensitivity (data may be from living human subjects) or data size (tens of terabytes). Further, predictions must be reproducible from the code provided by particpants. Containerization is an excellent solution to these problems: Rather than providing the data to the participants, we ask the participants to provided a Dockerized "trainable" model. We run the both the training and validation phases of machine learning and guarantee reproducibility 'for free'. We use the Docker tool suite to spin up and run servers in the cloud to process the queue of submitted containers, each essentially a batch job. This fleet can be scaled to match the level of activity in the challenge. We have used Docker successfully in our 2015 ALS Stratification Challenge and our 2015 Somatic Mutation Calling Tumour Heterogeneity (SMC-HET) Challenge, and are starting an implementation for our 2016 Digitial Mammography Challenge.

In BC’s nearly-decade-old “new” curriculum, the curricular competencies describe the processes that students are expected to develop in areas of learning such as mathematics. They reflect the “Do” in the “Know-Do-Understand” model. Under the “Communicating” header falls the curricular competency “Explain and justify mathematical ideas and decisions.” Note that it contains two processes: “Explain mathematical ideas” and “Justify mathematical decisions.” I have broken it down into its separate parts in order to understand--or reveal--its meaning. The first part is commonplace in classrooms. By now, BC math teachers—and students—understand that “Explain mathematical ideas” means more than “Show your work.” Teachers consistently ask “What did you do?” and “How do you know?” This process is about retelling, not just of steps but of thinking. The second part happens less frequently. Think back to the last time that you observed a student make—a necessary precursor to justify—a mathematical decision. “Justify” is about defending. Like “explain,” it involves reasoning; unlike “explain,” it also involves opinion and debate. In order to reinterpret the curricular competency “Explain and justify mathematical ideas and decisions,” I will continue to take apart its constituent part “Justify mathematical decisions” and carefully examine the term “mathematical decisions.” What, exactly, is a “mathematical decision”? Below, I will categorize answers to this question. These categories, and the provided examples, may help to suggest new opportunities for students to justify.
