The advantages of BTE hearing aids (those that fit behind the ear) are numerous. Not only can they deliver more amplification than smaller devices, they are generally suited to all degrees of hearing losses---from mild to profound. Additionally, behind-the-ear devices are suitable for children and adults alike. They are much easier to handle, especially for those with arthritis or other dexterity problems, than the smaller hearing aids that require a custom made ear mold designed to fit inside the ear canal.

New BTE Hearing Aids Are Powerful While Being Cosmetically Appealing
1. New BTE Hearing Aids Are Powerful While Being
Cosmetically Appealing
The advantages of BTE hearing aids (those that
fit behind the ear) are numerous. Not only can
they deliver more amplification than smaller
devices, they are generally suited to all degrees
of hearing losses—from mild to profound.
Additionally, behind-the-ear devices are suitable
for children and adults alike. They are much
easier to handle, especially for those with
arthritis or other dexterity problems, than the
smaller hearing aids that require a custom made ear mold designed to fit
inside the ear canal.
However, for many years hearing aid users have been more prone to select
smaller devices in an effort to hide the fact that they wear hearing aids.
Cosmetic concerns consistently trumped the obvious advantages of the
behind-the-ear style…until recently that is. With the introduction of open fit
and receiver-in-the-canal hearing aids, the purchase of BTE hearing aids is
on the rise.
Open fit hearing aids are smaller than traditional behind-the-ear devices
and, instead of being coupled to the ear with an ear mold, they have a thin,
clear plastic tube that sits inside the ear canal. They are very discreet, and
because the ear canal is not entirely “filled” with an ear mold, occlusion (that
talking in a barrel feeling) is eliminated.
