From Event to Action: Accelerate Your Decision Making with Real-Time Automation
March 2012 initial hearing aid fittings
1. Initial Hearing Aid Fittings
A hearing healthcare provider has
recommended hearing aids for your hearing
loss. Your options have been explained, your
aids chosen, and you are waiting to be
contacted when your hearing instruments are
ready. A wait time of 2-4 weeks can be typical
for customized hearing instruments and ear
pieces to come in from the manufacturer.
Many times you will not have that long of a wait, but it is good to
know that it is possible. Once your instruments are received by
the hearing healthcare provider, they will perform a maintenance
check and pre-program when possible. If you are wearing
standard stock hearing instruments, you may be fit and oriented
the same week as your candidacy is determined.
Your initial fitting and orientation appointment can be
approximately 45-90 minutes in length. It is good to bring a close
family member or friend to the orientation with you, especially if
you will be needing assistance with the use of your hearing
instruments. If your child is being fit, it is good for all caregivers
in the home to be present.
Your hearing healthcare provider will place the instruments in
your ear and determine if they fit well. The feeling may be initially
awkward, but you should not be in any pain or extreme
discomfort. Even if the provider notes a good fit, it is important
for you to alert them to any discomfort. You are the one who will
be wearing the aids, and it is very important that they are
comfortable to wear. In-the-drawer hearing aids are of no use to

2. you! Your provider may be able to make instant adjustments to
create a more comfortable fit.
Your hearing instruments will be connected directly or routed
wirelessly to a computer program. Although your provider will
have pre-programmed your aids, some adjustments may be
necessary. The aids will then be turned on. The sound will be
new, and may seem very loud. This is expected. However, if the
sound is uncomfortable beyond its newness or sounds distorted in
any way, let your provider know. Adjustments may be needed,
and information from the patient is even more valuable than
feedback from the computer program!
A schedule may be given to you to ease you into wearing your
hearing instruments. This adjustment period may be needed to
give your ears time to acclimate to all of the new sounds it is
hearing! However, if you feel that you do not want to stay on the
schedule provided, wear the aids more…never less.
You will then be guided through the use and maintenance of your
hearing instruments, including how to put in and remove your
aids. You may be asked to demonstrate your ability to complete
tasks related to your hearing instrument. Ask questions and make
certain you feel comfortable with handling your aids before you
leave.
Another appointment 1-2 weeks after your fitting will be
scheduled to check in on your progress and determine the need
for additional adjustments. Do not worry if adjustments need to
be made, it is typical for multiple adjustments to be made until
the aid is set perfectly for you. If you have issues with your
