Hanamatsuri Celebrations Elsewhere
Oxnard, Georgia: India; The birth of Buddha or Tathagata is celebrated in
India. Buddhist people go to common Viharas to observe a
rather longer-than-usual, full-length Buddhist sutra. The
usual dress is pure white. Non-vegetarian food is normally
avoided. Kheer, a sweet rice porridge is commonly served to
recall the story of Sujata, a maiden who, in Gautama
Buddha’s life, offered the Buddha a bowl of milk porridge.
Nepal: The birth of the Buddha is often celebrated by
Buddhists in Nepal for an entire month in the Buddhist
calendar. The actual day is called Buddha Poornima, also
traditionally known as Vaishakh Poornima. Although the day
marks not just the birth of Shakyamuni Gautama Buddha, but
also the day of Enlightenment, and Mahaparinirvana. But as a
gentle effect of West, the event of Birth is given paramount
importance. Nepal like India celebrates the birth of Buddha in
similar fashion with serving of Kheer, a sweet rice porridge,
and non-vegetarian food and the usual dress is pure white.
It is said that Buddha originally followed the way of
asceticism to attain enlightenment sooner, as was thought by
many at that time. He sat for a prolonged time with inadequate food and water, which caused his
body to shrivel so as to be indistinguishable from the bark of the tree that he was sitting under.
Seeing the weak Siddhartha Gautama, a girl named Sujata placed a bowl of milk in front of him as an
offering. Realizing that without food one can do nothing, the Buddha refrained from harming his
own body.

including celestial birds singing beautiful songs, Namu Amidabutsu
beautiful flowers, and a sweet gentle rain bathing
the baby Buddha. It is not necessarily the beauty
of the flowers, the sounds of the celestial birds, nor
the sweet gentle rain that fell, but the vibrant fact
that on this day was born the greatest of sentient
beings who became the Enlightened One, the
Buddha. Every year we celebrate our own
birthday. In our youth we are anxious to reach
“adulthood”, and in our old age we attempt to
cling to our “youth”. What is the meaning and
reason for celebrating our birth? Much of the
meaning of our own birth is often lost in the gifts
and the merriment. The celebration of our birth is
an expression of gratitude. This gratitude is
extended towards our friends, parents and to life
itself. This gratitude grows from an understanding
that our birth is the result of many people and that
our lives are intertwined with all others.
Understanding the Buddha’s teaching of
interdependency of all things will make it clear
that our birth is the result of many causes and
conditions. Realizing this we can see that our birth
is truly a rare and wonderful gift, and we have an
obligation to live out this life in accordance with
the teachings of the Buddha.
This obligation to live our lives out to the
fullest becomes even more striking when we look
at the symbolism and the significance of the
flower. The flower, as with all human beings, has Published by

5. Fujinkai Honors Keiro
On February 21, 2010, the Fujinkai ladies celebrated the New Year by also honoring
those over 80 years old or Keiro. Each person over 80 years was honored with sekihan
(mochi rice with azuki beans) or “happy rice”. Although the photos on this page may not be
very clear, all Keiro honorees (17) were happy to receive their sekihan—there were more
Keiro persons than younger persons. HOW NICE IT IS TO BE OVER 80 YEARS OLD!!
Jodo Shu is very grateful to all our elder members. The success of our Temple is due to the
hard work of all our members, including those who have gone to the Pure Land.
We need to take care of our elderly—it’s because of them and their sacrifices that we are
here. We need to learn from our elders. It is important that their knowledge is passed on
from generation to generation. Communication between generations is very important!
Each generation has experiences that could benefit each other. And as the song goes, WE
ARE ALL ONE FAMILY. DVDs, computers, ipods, air conditioning they can help us in our
daily lives but if some day we find ourselves without these electronics, can we sit around a
camp fire and sing songs or cook on the hibachi?
We also have some elderly members who are Keiro but who were unable to attend
because of transportation problems or physical health. Please don’t forget to come to our next
Keiro event! Younger generation, please bring your Keiro relatives! Some may be in care
homes or homebound but going to an outing to meet other Keiro people may make their life
happier, even if tomorrow they won’t remember today. Thank you.
