Web Authoring: Protocols, Design
Conventions and Software
Introduction:
In this report I will be discussing about Web authoring, protocols, design conventions, and
software but around the topic we will be also be discussing how the internet works, what
principles and protocols the internet is built on, how to design a website and how to build
and host a website online.
Web authoring:
Web authoring is principally the designing of websites and is broken into three topics:
Protocols, Design Conventions and Software. In this report I will be looking at these three
aspects, explaining what they are and supporting my work with examples.
Protocols
Is another way of saying rules, which the govern exchange the data and information over the
internet. There are few main protocols we need to get familiar with one is Top level domain name,
domain name, URL and Domain name registrar.
Top Level Domain Names
The TLDNis the last sections of the URL which indicates the website or the location for example,
www.boots.pl the .pl indicates the code what country it is in which this stands for Poland. Another
one is what organisation code the URL is from for example, www.haverstock.camden.sch.ukthe .sch
stands for school and this is anorganisation.
URL
Uniform Resource Locator (URL), is the web address of a website for example www.boots.co.uk
when you click this it will take you straight to the website.
Domain name
Is simply the name of the URL but shorter with just a name for example, www.twitter.co.uk
and when you search it in google or a search box you will write the name for short twitter
and it will still come up.
Domain name registration
This is users or owners of their own website that wants to buy a domain name for example,
www.”mickie”.co.uk they would also buy the Top Level Domain Name would be .co.uk or wherever
the location the website it based at or .org if it was an organisation for example a charity.
Web page naming conventions
Websites are usually made of lots of different pages with different tabs and navigation bars with the
same URL on the website but with each contents of each different page within that website should
always have suitable names for each page for example,
Home page= www.boots.co.uk/homepage
Contacts us= www.boots.co.uk/contactus
Offers=www.boots.co.uk/offers
Design conventions
Designing a webpage takes a lots of planning and detail to make a successful and professional
looking one as possible in design conventions we will be looking at the rule of thirds, colour
schemes, fonts & text and the background.
Rule of thirds
Is an essential way of designing a webpage and it’s a rule that is used to the websites and layout and
composition of images. Example,
Websites and images can be divided into thirds: thee horizontal lines and three vertical lines. Where
the lines cross and meet into a small square are “Points of focus”. The eye is naturally drawn to
those positions usually the middle. A website that uses the Rule of Thirds are usually seen as visually
appealing to the eye and keeps the design of the page neat and professional.
As you can see here what attracts you the most is the middle and it is more appealing to the
eye.
Colour schemes
There three main different colour schemes that a website is designed with its important that the
designer think carefully of the colour of the webpage it sets out the tone and shows the nature of
the webpage.
Monochromatic
Monochromatic means one colour and it’s a Greek word mono means one and Chroma means
colour. This means using one colour but also using different tones, tints and shades.
Analogues
Colour scheme is one which uses similar colours. Analogous colours are located next to each other
on the colour wheel.
Complimentary
Colours are ones which are opposite, but from the eye works very well together. The colours are
always opposite each other on the colour wheel.
Fonts&Text
Fonts are critically important for a webpage in usability and visually there are two different fonts
Serif and Sans Serif.
Sans serif means it’s more bold and clear and has no flicks at the end of each letter like Serif will
have. In print, publishing and website design Sans Serif Fonts are used because they are clearer to
see.
Also colour and font sizes are important in designing a webpage it makes a big difference and the
title and subtitle of the webpage to show importance to show what your webpage is about and
breaks it down to make things easier for user to read on the webpage that’s why your text should
always be short and snappy for example your home page should have a short paragraph introducing
the webpage.
Backgrounds
Backgrounds on webpages are usually just images, single colours or patterns. Adding images can
make your webpage more pleasing to the eye but sometimes it’s hard to find the right size of image
to add because sometimes larger images can make it slower to add onto your webpage. Patterns are
always good but should never be distracting from your foreground and stopping the reader noticing
the main reason of the webpage. Single colour should always follow the colour scheme of the
webpage and make it easier for the user to read it.
Software
There are many different tools and software to make a website but the two main are,
HTML text editors
Is text based editors mostly people who are more experienced with making websites and the
software they use is notepad and on the notepad you will need to have a good knowledge of HTML
codes with these codes you can build a webpage for example
<p> is used to make a new paragraph: example – <p> text paragraph </p>
<br> is used to make line breaks between text: example – sentences<br>
And there are many more HTML codes and with these codes you can build a website but you can see
it visually yet but will be able to see how your text is set out.
Visual editors
Are software’s which does most of the job for you like programming but visually you will be able to
see how you build your website and software’s like these are Dreamweaver and Frontpage.
Conclusion
In conclusion this report has looked at several different aspects of Web Authoring, including
Protocols, Design conventions, Fonts and text, Background and software and more contexts within
those different aspects. These different things that I have learnt from this assignment have taught
me how the internet works and the way building a professional looking webpage. I can use this in my
own work because these things will help me make my own Super hero webpage which I’m doing
Storm from Marvel comic books and these things will help me by choosing the right theme/colour to
represent my superhero with images and patterns . Also the rule of thirds will help lay out the
pictures on my webpage and make it more pleasing to the eye. Lastly the fonts and text will help me
so I know what to use to make my webpage readable.
