1. Photography and photo imaging
Photography is the practice of creating images by recording
light, either chemically by a light-sensitive material such as
photographical film or electronically by a image sensor. The
lens is used to focus the light reflected or emitted from objects
into real image on the light-sensitive surface inside a camera
during a timed exposure. The result in an electronic image
sensor is an electrical charge at each pixel, which is processed
and stored in a digital image file for display.
There are around 40,000 people working in photo imaging over
the UK. This particular industry has nearly 9,000 companies,
which are a mixture of sole trading and freelance
photographers.
2. Getty Images
Getty Images is a private publishing, media and web design
industry that concentrates on stock photography. They are owned
by Carlyle Group.
It is a supplier of stock images for business and consumers with an
archive of 80 million still images and illustrations and more than
50,000 hours of stock film footage. It targets three markets which
are advertising and graphic design, print and online publishing, inhouse design, marketing and communication departments.
The Carlyle Group is a public global asset management film
specializing in private equity and holds a revenue of nearly $86
billion and currently employs 87,000 people. Carlyle has
completed investments in notable companies such as Booz Allen
Hamilton, Dex Media, Getty Images, Hertz etc.
3. Magnum photos
Magnum Photos is an international Photographic
cooperative owned by its photographer members.
Fujifilm
Fujifilm is a public Japanese multinational photography and
imaging company. It has 35,000 employees and a revenue of
2 trillion. This company produces sale and serving of color
photographic film, digital cameras, color paper, optical
services, photocopiers and printers.
Fuji Xerox is a joint venture between Fujifilm and Xerox
Corporation of North America. Fujifilm bought Sericol Ltd. a
UK-based printing ink company specializing in screen,
narrow web, and digital print technologies in March 2005.
