Institutions
1. Conventions of institutions
There are a lot of companies involved in the production,
distribution and marketing of media text. These
institutions include:
Columbia
Paramount
Universal
DreamWorks
Metro Goldwyn Mayer
20th century fox
2. Columbia
Conventions of the institution Columbia include the logo being
set up in the sky with the clouds which connotes dreams,
heaven, celestial, beauty and imagination. The light beaming
out from the statue that looks like the statue of liberty connotes
that its โhigh upโ in the sky looking above the world showing itโs
the most important. This all displays a sense of achievement.
The bright light used symbolises freedom, God like, power,
dignity and strength. The colours used such as the blue in the
sky represent happiness and a positive feeling as well as the
yellow and white.
3. Paramount
Similarly to Columbia the logo is set up in the sky though its on top
of a mountain which symbolises the importance of it as its โhigh upโ
in the sky watching down. The colours used such as blue, white and
the surroundings of purple and light blues show the happiness and
signifies dreams, heaven and beauty. The mountain is โMount
Everestโ shows how โgreatโ and important the logo is as Mount
Everest is the biggest mountain. Light is being used to highlight the
certain elements of importance in this case the top of the mountain.
4. Universal
Universal eliminates power and storytelling as the place the
logo is set is literally โout of this worldโ which signifies that the
institution is very powerful and big as well as important.
Universal is the 4th oldest movies studio in the world which
explains why its set out of this world. The colours used such as
black makes the logo and the universe bold and stand out for
the audience to notice it immediately. The light used is beamed
at the title of the institution & world to show importance.
5. Dream Works
DreamWorks institution also is placed up in the sly surrounded
by clouds to signify importance as being high up above
everything. The moon also symbolises power as its out of the
world displaying strength. The colours used are all primary
colours like blue and white. The blue connotes heaven, dream,
celestial and happiness. The white title is a bold colour to grab
audienceโs attention and get them to recognise the title. The
light being used to highlight the certain elements of importance
such as the clouds and the title.
6. Metro Goldwyn Mayer
MGM is different from the other institutions as it uses a black
back ground with a lion and gold colour in the middle. The lion
represents power and strength and danger as that is what is
usually associated with a lion. The lion is placed in a gold crest
which displays power as the colour gold connotes rich,
precious, valuable, prestigious and wealth symbolising that
MGM is important and treated like loyalty and presented as
royal. The colour black is used to make the image and the crest
of gold stand out to the audience so they can recognise the
institution.
7. 20th century Fox
the 20th century fox title is set on a statue which symbolises
power and legend as statues are usually associated with
important people which shows that the institution is to be treated
as important and dominates the whole picture. The colour I
similar to MGM as it uses gold. Though it is also similar to
Columbia, DreamWorks and paramount as its tilted to the sky
shows that its up high displaying importance. The colour such as
gold represents power, wealth, royalty and rich. The colour blue
represents happiness, heaven, dream and beauty.
