6. Introduction to Fire Extinguishers
A Fire Extinguisher is an absolute necessity in any home or office. In
a fire related accident, It will end up saving your property or even
lives.

7. Introduction to Fire Extinguishers
A Fire Extinguisher is an active fire protection device used
to extinguish or control small fires.
Typically a Fire Extinguisher consists of a handheld
cylindrical pressure vessel containing an agent which can
be discharged to extinguish a fire.
Note: Small fires are measured approximately 3 feet by 3
feet. Examples of small fires include a table, public dustbins
etc

In your work area, you must be aware of the location of
Fire Extinguishers. This information will be very useful in
times of a fire related emergency
Also,
Fire Extinguishers should be placed in a place where it
is:
Easy to locate e.g. exit doors, potential fire prone
areas e.g. cooking areas
Not obstructed
11. Cause of Fires
Fire is the result of a chemical combustion reaction
Oxygen
Heat
Fuel
The combination of these 3 factors is often termed as the Fire Triangle
12. Cause of Fires
Breaking the Fire Triangle formula! – When you eliminate one
of the Three components that causes the fire, the fire will be extinguished.
Oxygen
Heat
Fuel
Fire Extinguishers are designed to remove at least one of these
elements so that a fire will die out.
14. Type of Extinguishers
Class A extinguishers can put out fires from
“ordinary combustibles” such as wood,
plastic or paper
Class B can put out burning liquids such as
petrol or oil
Class C can out out electrical fires
Class D extinguishes, designed to put out
burning metal
16. Method for putting out fires
With the appropriate extinguisher and using the P.A.S.S. steps,
you can effectively put out fires.

PULL the pin: This unlocks the operating lever
and allows you to discharge the extinguisher.

AIM low: Point the extinguisher nozzle at the
base of the fire.

Squeeze the lever above the handle:
This discharges the extinguishing agent.

SWEEP from side to side: Moving
carefully toward the fire, keep the
extinguisher aimed at the base of the fire
and sweep back and forth until the flames
appear to be out. If the fire re-ignites, repeat
the process.
