09 10-12 plate tectonics
1. September 10, 2012
• EQ: How can the theory of plate tectonics explain
the effects of physical processes that occur on
Earth? S6E5e
• Learning Target: I can explain why the theory of
continental drift was not accepted by scientists.
• Start-Up: What layer of the Earth is also know as
the lithospheric plates?
• Agenda
– Start-Up Activities
– Vocabulary introduction (Notes)
– Complete foldable work
– Ticket Out: Foldable questionnaire
• Homework: Review notes/prepare for note check quiz
2. September 11, 2012
• EQ: How can the theory of plate tectonics explain the
effects of physical processes that occur on Earth? S6E5e
• Learning Target: I can describe how one theory explains
how the continents have moved over Earth.
• Start-Up: How does convection currents cause the
tectonic plates to move? (Write at least 3 sentences
explaining this process. Keep your journal to share your
answer.)
• Agenda:
– Start-Up Activities
– Notes
– Review Activity
• Homework: Reading comprehension activity
3. Remember:
The earth is very hot inside and a current of heat
flows from the core to the crust. The convection
current takes place in the mantle. This current
cools down as it comes closer
to the surface of the earth. As
it rises, it cools and descends
to the inner earth. There the
temperature increases and the
current rises again. This goes
on and on.
4. September 12, 2012
• EQ: What is one hypothesis that explains the
continents’ movement? S6E5e
• Learning Target: I can explain the theory of plate
tectonics..
• Start-Up: Describe one piece of evidence that
support the theory of plate tectonics. (Keep your
journals to check your answer.)
• Agenda:
– Start-Up Activities
– Notes
– Activity
– Ticket Out (quiz)
• Homework: Draw Pangaea and current-day Earth.
5. Sample Answer
• The same fossils found on different
continents help to support the theory
of continental drift.
6. September 13, 2012
• EQ: Where does the force come from that can
move a tectonic plate? S6E5d
• LT: I can describe the theory of plate tectonics.
• Start-Up: Could earthquakes be a result of
tectonic plates moving?
• Agenda:
– Start-Up Activities
– Notes
– Textbook work
• Homework: Write a summary about continental drift theory.
8. September 14, 2012

the effects of physical processes that occur on
Earth? S6E5e

changing position continuously as they travel
across Earth’s surface.
• Start-Up: Describe how India became part of the
Asian continent.
• Agenda:
