affected which genrethat person preferred. It
issaid that only women enjoy Romantic
Comedies(Romance), or “chick flicks”, and
men prefer Action-Adventure. Wewanted to
test if thiswasan accurateportrayal of gender
preferences, or if gender really madeno
differencein which genreaperson preferred.
4. Our population of interest was
teenagers aged 14-18, the general
high school age. We expected to find
that most males chose action films,
while most females chose romance.
Hypothesis:
Ho = Gender has no effect on the type of
movie you prefer
Ha = Gender has an effect on the type of
movie you prefer.
5. In our research we found that similar studies have been done before.
Fischoff, in 1994, did a study that revealed film preference to be consistent
with gender identity.
Results of the study indicated that the most popular film genres were, in
order of rank, drama, comedy, action-adventure, romance, and the
combined category of science fiction/fantasy.
Women’s films are not simply “romance” films – they are films in which the
story is told from the woman’s point of view, the woman is the clear
protagonist or heroine, or the story centers around women and women’s
issues.
“Men’s films” tend to focus more on action, sex (rather than romance) and
competition.

6. We gave the following survey to 186 students
during the four lunch periods in order to collect
data on their gender and movie preferences.

Because no one chose Documentary as their favorite movie

14. One problem we encountered was the fact that we did not survey enough
people, therefore our expected cell frequency was not high enough to run a chi
square test. If we were to change something in a follow-up study, we would
survey more people to be sure that we had enough. We would also survey
classes, instead of in lunch, because the fact that not all students have a lunch
could cause a bias. We would also be sure to survey and equal number of
males and females to ensure that the data is not skewed towards one gender.
