The Rotary Club of Tooting in London, UK was chartered in 1930. They have had success with their Dictionary for Life program which provides primary school children with colorful USBourne dictionaries for free to promote literacy. Many Rotary clubs in the UK work with schools, helping pupils especially with reading and writing. Rotarians listen to children read and help them understand language, supporting teachers and helping pupils discover the joy of books.

PRESIDENTS MESSAGE
Hello Everyone,
This is a very exciting time for me, this being my first message to all of you (other than at Changeover).
The situation is still feeling a little surreal to me but I’m sure it will start to feel real…very soon!!!!!
Before we go any further I would really like to thank PP Penny for the great job she has done as
President over the past 12 months. She has worked really hard and has been an inspiration to me and I
would suspect, to many of you too. She will certainly be a hard act to follow.
I hope you all enjoyed yourself at Changeover Night. I had a wonderful time in spite of my nervousness,
and would like to thank all those who helped to make it the successful evening that it was. These include
Alan Jones, Wilf Van Emmerik; Gordon Scoble; and of course Penny Hill, who brought it all together so
well on the night. You should all pat yourselves on the back for the fantastic job that you did. The Dural
Country Club is a lovely venue and the room was just perfect for our function. All in all a great night.
On Monday night, the Board will be launching the new Club Plan. We listened to the ideas that were put
forward in the survey that many of you completed earlier in the year and have been planning an exciting
year ahead with which I’m sure that you will all be very happy.
I’m looking forward to seeing you all there at my first meeting as President.
Warm regards,
President Bobby Redman

VOCATIONAL
WHAT AM I UP TO NOW BOBBY REDMOND
Started in Banking as a teenager, then took up Nurse training and became a registered nurse, got married
and then joined the fashion industry as a buyer. Became a single mother and worked various jobs in the
hospitality industry to fit the timetable of child raising.
Remarried and immigrated to Australia where I took up a clerical job with Berger Paints in the Automotive
Paints division. This led to ever increasing responsibility with Berger and then with Repco, rising to State
Manager.
The call for a higher education beckoned and I enrolled at University achieving high standards and a degree in
Psychology. I then worked with children with various psychological problems and ultimately with my current
employer Independent Disability Services.
GUEST SPEAKERS - JASMINE CALLEJA & ANISKA BEADON IDS.
IDS established 1979, a NFP value based organisation with over 400 Serrvice users employing 120 staff and
covering the Hills District and out to Windsor and Penrith.
Targeted Clients all persons with a disability
We provide a service which encompasses all facets of care from Case Management thru to Accommodation
and respite.
We are currently launching a new project called “Umbrella” which is aimed at providing a purpose build
premise to provide emergency response support for people with a disability who find themselves in crises and
are unable to cope. Loss of parent is the single largest trauma faced.
This building will provide facilities to enable Assessment, Therapy, Intervention areas and offer advanced
care.
It is a large project requiring funding in excess of $1,500,000.00 and we are seeking assistance from
Business and community and Rotary to achieve our aim. Currently there are 800 individuals registered on
ADHC’s “Immediate need Register”
A Dinner dance has been organized for July 20 at Blacktown Leagues Club and we hope many Rotarians will
attend.

Rotary’s role in India’s success against polio draws global media coverage
The role played by Rotary International in helping India stop transmission of the wild poliovirus generated
strong media coverage worldwide. News of India’s milestone achievement of going one year without polio in
January garnered more than 100 media placements that featured Rotary, representing nearly 250 million
online visitors and a print circulation of over 10 million readers. Nearly 95 percent of the coverage of the
milestone – by the Associated Press, The Economist, Financial Times, New York Times, Reuters, and other
major media – mentioned Rotary’s leading role in the achievement.
In February, the BBC featured a news story that highlighted Rotary’s role in India. The BBC also carried
several news stories, blog posts, and Twitter feeds related to Rotarians participating in the country’s National
Immunization Days. India’s removal from the list of polio-endemic countries by the World Health Organzation
was announced at Polio Summit 2012 by Ghulam Nabi Azad, the country’s minister of Health and Family
Welfare.
Anticipating India’s milestone achievement, the RI Communications Group launched an aggressive
communications campaign to increase understanding of Rotary’s leadership role in the country’s success
against polio and the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, working with the GPEI partners, Rotary public image
coordinators, and others.

A Minnesota couple decided to vacation to Florida during the

Club Calendar spent their honeymoon 20 years earlier. Because of hectic
schedules, it was difficult to coordinate their travel schedules. So,
the husband left Minnesota and flew to Florida on Thursday. His
wife would fly down the following day.
The husband checked into the hotel. There was a computer in his
room, so he decided to send an e-mail to his wife. However, he
accidentally left out one letter in her e-mail address, and without
realizing his error, he sent the e-mail.
Meanwhile.....somewhere in Houston, a widow had just returned
home from her husband's funeral. He was a minister of many
years who was called home to glory following a sudden heart
attack. The widow decided to check her e-mail, expecting
messages from relatives and friends. After reading the first
message, she fainted.
The widow's son rushed into the room, found his mother on the
floor, and saw the computer screen which read:
To: My Loving Wife
Subject: I've Arrived
Date: 16 May 2003
Note: Apologies must be in to PP Graeme I know you're surprised to hear from me. They have computers
here now and you are allowed to send e-mails to your loved
Rohan by 12pm on Mondays so numbers ones. I've just arrived and have been checked in. I see that
can be confirmed for dinner. everything has been prepared for your arrival tomorrow. Looking
