RELATIONS BETWEEN TURKEY AND THE NETHERLANDS, THE MAYOR OF AMSTERDAM IS
DELIGHTED TO INVITE YOU TO ATTEND THE WORKSHOP ‘HOW TO MAKE AN ART
FACTORY IN ISTANBUL?’
THIS WORKSHOP WILL TAKE PLACE ON MONDAYMORNING THE 15TH OF OCTOBER, AT
THE CLIPPER STAD AMSTERDAM WHICH AT THAT TIME WILL BE LOCATED AT THE
KADIKÖY TERMINAL ISTANBUL.
Workshop: How to make an art factory (=broedplaats) in Istanbul?

Target group - Turkish artists, cultural and creative entrepreneurs in all disciplines, politicians and
civil servants of Istanbul

Context - The workshop will be succeeded by the presentation of the Book ‘Art Bridges’ which
will be handed over to deputy Mayor of Amsterdam, mrs. Carolien Gehrels. This
ceremony will be chaired by mr. Cas Smithuijsen, executive director of the Boekman
Foundation.
What is this workshop ‘how to make an art factory in Istanbul’ about?
The workshop deals with the question what do creative initiatives need by means of expertise,
funding, networks and permits to develop a so called art factory by themselves. To get the support
needed in cities like Istanbul or Amsterdam it might be necessary to work out a vision why the
foreseen art factory will have added value for the city. From this vision one can distillate a program,
desired tenants, organization, construction plans and an estimation of costs and revenues. Based
on this plan one can indicate what contributions are needed by what stakeholder to make this plan
come true. The city organization can play a role in this. In Amsterdam a bureau has been set up for
this objective: Bureau Broedplaatsen (=art factories). This bureau, part of the city administration,
has contributed over the last twelve years to the emerge of approximately fifty ‘broedplaatsen’ in all

2. sorts everywhere in Amsterdam. Each of these broedplaatsen contain a mix of studios and
residence for artists, cultural and creative entrepreneurs and public spaces like resto/club or expo.
Our workshop points out how each stakeholder plays a role in the making of broedplaatsen in
Amsterdam. We want to do this by a combined presentation by a designer and cultural entrepreneur
mr. Dajo Bodisco who took the initiative to set up the Broedplaats ‘Krux’ in Amsterdam, and head of
the Bureau Broedplaatsen, mr. Jaap Schoufour.
By this presentation, Bodisco and Schoufour, show how such private public partnership in the
Amsterdam context, leads to results. The practical part of the workshop consists of input from the
audience whether in Istanbul the need for such art factories exists and how this can be facilitated in
the local context of Istanbul.
KRUX AMSTERDAM (director: Dajo Bodisco)
Initiated by four young designers, Krux is a 1500 m2 workspace in a former industrial area in the city
of Amsterdam.
Planned as an efficient tool to experiment, create and produce, the
space has been conceived following the image of a street in which
designers, artists and craftsmen share knowledge and tools.
With the ambition to be a platform to exchange locally and
internationally, Krux organizes exhibitions, events, lectures and
workshops. Dajo Bodisco, Erasmus Scherjon, Francois Dumas and
Gero Asmuth met in Eindhoven, where the two Dutch, French and
German graduated from the Design Academy Eindhoven.
With the Krux they manifest their vision of a social and professional
environment, materialized in a space where young creative
entrepreneurs self-produce, colaborate with industry, interact, gather
and take advantage of sharing costs and knowledge.
Bureau Broedplaatsen, City of Amsterdam (director: Jaap Schoufour)
Bureau Broedplaatsen (BBp) is part of the city administration of Amsterdam. On the basis of twelve
years of experience with creating art factories, BBp occupies a specific role and position regarding
the realisation of new art factories. BBp fulfils a facilitating role. Art factory initiatives, as
entrepreneurs, are themselves responsible for realising their art factories. Preferably, they search
for a site that inspires them. Subsequently, what they need to achieve their dream is specified in
consultation with BBp. This can remain limited to advice. It can also be more intensive, with the BBp

3. playing a guiding role by a step-by-step plan. It offers something to hold on to when transforming a
building into an art factory. The city authorities play an even greater role in the use of credit or
grants to cover the commercially non-viable component of property development. Each project is
unique in terms of its location, division of roles, involvement and outcome. BBp has a network in the
property world that includes housing corporations, investors, developers, local authorities and city
districts, enabling interesting buildings to be
tracked down and paired with those seeking
space.
The emphasis on taking responsibility and working
independently encourages resilience,
entrepreneurship and professionalism on the part
of the entrepreneur.
