2. Advertising Industry
Advertising images are mainly used on billboards, in magazines, on posters and
on flyers. They can be straightforward deceptions of a product or model or they
could incorporate complex graphics. This type of photography uses the very
latest post-production techniques to show that the company is on the leading
edge. The idea for advertising through any of these sources starts off with the
client meeting with the photographer and both of them coming up with a brief
with is as tight as possible. By doing this is means that it reduces the risk of
surprises for the client when the final photographs are delivered. Here I have
shown a few examples of where photography has been used for advertising. For
example I have shown a poster for a McDonald's and Arimi Code advertising.

3. Fashion Industry

Fashion photography is mainly used to sell and promote different fashion
ranges, trends and new clothing seasons. This brings in the target audience by
using various images from different sources. You would mainly see fashion
photography being used in fashion magazines for photo-shoots which promote
and show the audience new trends that are occurring. The main fashion
magazines you would see this type of photography being used in are Vogue
and Elle. Another way that you would see photography in fashion being used is
for retail purposes promoting a certain fashion shop, this is usually seen on a
billboard. I have shown an example of Sebastian Kim’s work here; this is
something which is likely to be used in a well known fashion magazine like Elle
or Vogue as an advertisement. The audience would know this because this
image uses the logo for famous fashion brand Calvin Klein.

4. Music Industry

Photography is used a lot in the music industry for many different things. This includes things like
album covers, music videos, posters, gigs, festivals, promotional material, merchandise and also
via the internet on the band or artists website. They can also be used on other sites like social
networking ones. Photography is important in this industry as it helps to promote a band or artist
and gives information about them to their audience. This is done by using photography for things
such as tour posters, which tells their fans information about the different dates and locations of
the tour. As well as this, another way this is done is by using photography on an album cover. By
doing this it helps to promote the band or artist because it will be seen in various shops even ones
that don’t usually relate to the intended target audience. This means that the band or artist will
get recognised by more people. The internet is a huge part if how photography is used in the
music industry. It is more active than other industries such as fashion due to how music is now
based a lot more on the internet because of modern technology. Mick Huston does photography
for bands which would mainly help them with things like posters and website material.

5. Sports Industry

Photography in the sport industry is mainly used in the mass media. An example of this would be for
magazines and newspapers. You would see it being used in magazines like top gear for pictures of cars.
Magazines use it to promote different sportsmen where as newspapers use photos to inform the
public and give them information and stories uses pictures to capture their eye. This can also be used in
magazines but they only promote certain things where as newspapers don’t. Sport and match
programmes use photography in this industry for people attending football matches or other sport
games. A match programme would use photography by using photos of players and the management
team. These are used to give information to the audience and tell them things like the latest news on
the club. This type of media is less likely to promote using photography. Another way photography can
be used in this industry is in sport shops. Sport shops usually use photography to decorate their store
and their products that they are selling. Something this shops often do with photos is use a well known
sport celebrity to promote a new product. This gives them more of a chance to grab the attention of
their target audience by the celebrity capturing their eye. Bill Frankes is sport photographer that you
will most likely see taking action pictures at sport events for athletes .

6. Photo journalism

Photo journalism is a type of journalism that documents and shows historical and
current events happening all around the world. Its used in media like magazines and
newspapers because this is where news is broadcasted. Photos like these can also be
seen on media like the television on a news programme to give the audience real life
documentation of events that have happened or are happening.

7. Fine Art Photography

This type is photography taken from the photographers point of view. They can
imagine their own photograph and recreate it to make it aesthetically pleasing. There
is sometimes a meaning behind fine art photography which makes this type of
photography interesting because people can see in imagine in many different ways.
Photographers of this industry do not cater to briefs and do work for other companies
in the media, they exhibit their work in a gallery.
