2. LEAH HEWSON 2
In 2007, Leah Hewson began attending Dun
Laoghaire Institute of Art Design and Technology
doing the Fine art course in Visual Arts Practice. She
began her practice mainly through photography,
looking at the movement of water. During her Second
year Leah’s practice led her to engage with print,
immersing herself in her fear of spiders. During the
printing process she experimented with materials,
which saw the beginning of the use of wallpaper in her
work. Trying to develop a certain style the wallpaper
became a canvas for her to research Japanese film and
animation which then carried through into fourth year
where the concept of her art changed by becoming
fascinated by artists that create surreal and fantastical
worlds, like that of Ashley Bikerton, Mark Ryden and
Todd schorr.
The impact of the final image has always been an
important part in Leah’s practice. She achieves this
with the use of scale and colour which is an influence
from the bold colours of Peter Max’ work. After
completing her BA hons in Fine art, achieving a First
class Honors Degree Hewson is currently
collaborating with the ‘KTcontemporary’ gallery in
Donnybrook, Dublin producing work for sale and
commissions.

Artist Statement
I am interested in the boundaries between reality and fantasy. I want to
explore this space in relation to my own thoughts and imagination as
well as elements of the outside world.
By using a mixed media approach with paint, ink, markers and stickers
on wallpaper, i attempt to move from the mundane materiality of reality
into the realm of the fantastical, creating a multitude of alien and
mutated forms that are reflected from my own personal being and
construct a way of seeing that challenges common perception and
experience.
