Halong Bay in the Quang Ninh province of Vietnam, about 100 miles east of Hanoi, is on the
short list of finalists for possible New7Wonders of Nature, a global campaign to elect the
official new seven wonders of nature. The seven will be named on Nov. 11. Halong Bay has
nearly 2,000 limestone islands — many of them hollow, with massive caves. There are
several operators offering up excursions on the bay, but Emeraude Classic Cruises says it
offers up something a little different.

Emeraude offers up a four-course dinner inside one of these caves during its annual Wine
and Dine Cruise.
This year, the cruise departs May 14 and returns the next morning. The cruise's $245-perperson price tag includes breakfast at Hanoi's Press Club, champagne, a seafood buffet, and
tapas and wine tasting before dinner in the cave.

That's the scientific explanation of how the area was created. The myth is interesting too.
Legend has it that while the Vietnamese of generations ago were defending their land from
the Chinese, dragons were sent from above to help. Instead of fire, the dragons spat out
jewels that formed the various islands upon hitting the bay. After the land was protected
against the Chinese, the dragon family enjoyed being there so much that it stayed. The
location where the mother dragon stayed is now known as Halong.
