Find an opportunity to demonstrate servant leadership in an organization or community through volunteering or serving others. Your goal is to serve the selected organization or entity for at least a total of four hours. Submit a summary (1-2 paragraphs) of your intended servant leadership activity for approval by the instructor. Include the name of the organization and contact information for the organizational leader. You will use this experience as the basis for the CLC presentation in Topic 4. You will need to take pictures during your service project experience for the presentation. You will also need to submit a “Service Project Consent Letter" signed by a representative of the organization. Consider the following quote from Robert K. Greenleaf as you complete the service project: "The difference manifests itself in the care taken by the servant-first to make sure that other people's highest priority needs are being served. The best test, and difficult to administer, is: Do those served grow as persons? Do they, while being served, become healthier, wiser, freer, more autonomous, more likely themselves to become servants? And, what is the effect on the least privileged in society? Will they benefit or at least not be further deprived." .

So, do you typically guess what would work well to connect with your neighbors? Maybe you stereotype the community and assume what they need? Well, if you want to connect in a real way to your neighborhood or city, you better start listening to your neighbors and build on their strengths to raise up local leaders for the long run. HSL 4850 Human Services Programs: Community, Culture and Intersectionality Final Professional Development Plan Part III The goal of the Professional Development Plan is to 1) analyze aspects of professional ethical conduct, 2) articulate a specific area & areas of activism, and 3) Develop a professional plan for your career in this area. Part III will allow you to focus specifically on your area of interest and explore agencies in your geographic area. You have a choice here. You can either: ➢ Analyze human services available in your geographic location (i.e., town/city) OR ➢ Analyze human services available in your geographic region (i.e., Central Illinois) that address a particular problem or issue of your choice (e.g., food insecurity, families, child welfare) *Clearly identify which option you are selecting at the beginning of this assignment. Develop a resource list of at least 15 programs that meet your criteria (either in your geographic area OR address a specific topic and are within a geographic region). For each agency, write a brief summary that includes name, population served/services offered, website or contact information, & a 1-3 sentence description of each (could be taken from their website). After you have completed the resource list, select one agency at which you might like to work and discuss it in more detail. For example, you could discuss the history of the organization, the clientele, the size of the organization and number of employees, or what a human services employee might do at the agency. This should be about a page and include discussion of at least 2-3 different areas (those listed or other areas of your choice). Lastly, describe your dream job in 10 sentences or less. Talk about what it is, why it’s your dream job, and how your education at EIU is preparing you for this role. Grading Rubric Assignment requirements (5 points) The assignment is no more than 3 pages of content, double-spaced, uses 12 point Times New Roman font throughout, has 1” margins, each section is clearly labeled with an appropriate heading. No points will be earned if these criteria are not present. Clearly identified the focus of the assignment (2 points) The student clearly stated which option they are completing (all human services in their town or human services focused on a particular topic in their region). Resource List of 15 Agencies (30 points) At least 15 agencies are identified and described in this section including name, population served/services offered, website or contact information, & a 1-3 sentence description of each. Social Policy Toolbox (see attachments) Also see attachments for an example of the instructors expectations. Community Policy Proposals You will be using the results of your Unit 3 Community Assessment assignment as the basis for this assignment. You have examined the social change and public policy environment of your home community by surveying the population demographics (taking into account gender, race, and sexual orientation, as well as varied nationalities and their social and economic status) and explored public sources of information in order to identify demands for social changes in businesses, non-profits, and government. These demands reflect the possible need for public policy development. Draft and present to your group two possible policy proposals that respond to the specific public demands you identified in your community in the previous assignment. (Due Sunday November 2) These demands may apply to businesses, non-profit organizations, or government. Utilize the document entitled, "Elements of a Standard Policy Statement," which is located in your Social Policy Toolbox, to guide your development of these proposals. Include a title for each proposal. Meet with your group during this week. Each member of your group will offer each of their public policy proposals for review. Acting in a collaborative capacity, offer suggestions concerning the public policy proposals of each of your peers and recommend to each presenter a primary policy that should be developed and used to complete the remaining project assignments. Write a 750-word written summary of your meeting(s) with your group, emphasizing these elements: (DUE NOVEMBER 8....I will try to provide feedback from the group for the summary once available) State the proposed policy on which you have decided, with the following: A descriptive title. Working with entire communities and organizations might seem overwhelming, due to the large number of people involved. Where do you begin? It might be a relief to know that the GIM is just as useful to social workers practicing at the macro level as it is for those practicing at the micro and mezzo levels. In fact, you begin the process in the same way with proper engagement and the appropriate form of assessment before enacting an intervention. Successful engagement and assessment depends on strong interpersonal skills, regardless of the level of intervention. In some respects, skills such as empathy, warmth, genuineness, and general rapport-building are the same for macro work as they are for micro and mezzo work—they just may be applied in a different way. In other respects, this level of intervention depends on additional skills not often identified as social work-related, including negotiating, mediating, assessing, and budgeting. How might you utilize these skills when engaging and assessing communities? A competent and successful social work policy practitioner is able to meld these skills. This is of particular necessity when the goal is social change. For this Assignment , review this week’s Resources. Refer to the community you selected for this week’s Discussion. Then imagine that you have been assigned to complete a needs assessment and identify potential resources for this community. You elected to interview key informants as one form of assessing this community. Consider who you would contact as a key informant for this community. Finally, think about how you might engage the informant to obtain the community details to complete your needs assessment. Assignment: (2- to 4-page paper in APA format). Your paper should include the following: A description of the community you selected A description of the key informants you would contact within that community An explanation of why you would contact the key informants you selected An explanation of the skills you might use to engage these informants to obtain the community details to complete your needs assessment and explain why you chose those skills. Discussion 1: Social Change, Leadership, and Advocacy Three core concepts are relevant to members of human and social services professions: social change, leadership, and advocacy. Broadly speaking, social change has to do with righting the wrongs in society; leadership means being a guiding force in fostering social and professional change; and advocacy refers to sponsoring or promoting such change. Because these concepts are intrinsic to human services professionals, it is imperative to explore each of these core concepts more deeply, evaluate their meanings, and consider how they are alike and different. To prepare: Review this week’s Learning Resources. Think about similarities and differences among the concepts of social change, leadership, and advocacy. With these thoughts in mind: By Day 3 Post a brief explanation of two similarities and two differences between each pair of concepts (i.e., social change vs. leadership, social change vs. advocacy, and leadership vs. advocacy). n this workshop, we will engage in open dialogue about the importance of drawing a line between a charity-centered approach to community service as opposed to a social-justice approach. Primarily, it is imperative that we begin by establishing a working definition of the word volunteerism to be used as a reference during our conversations and to foster a moment of reflection about our experience, thus far, as Bonner leaders. At the conclusion of this workshop, we should be able to walk away with a deeper understanding of the importance of ethical, social-justice centered community service.

Peer 1: David Jones The six core values of social work have ethical principles which are the ideals to which each social worker should strive to meet (NASW,2017). Service happens when a social worker uses his or her knowledge, values, and skills to help those in need. Social justice is when a social worker attempts social change on behalf of those who can’t help themselves (Gallina, 2010). Dignity and worth of the person is showing respect to each client regardless of their social situation. The importance of human relationships is seen by social workers in their efforts to advance, renew, and improve the well-being of families, social groups, and communities. Integrity is behaving at all times in a trusting manner. Competence is basically a social worker knowing his or her job and taking steps to improving their professional expertise (NASW, 2017). These core values relate to my field education experience, because all the above aforementioned characteristics and qualities emerged full surface, while interacting with clients. Ethics plays a major role in the learning agreement with my agency, one of the competencies is to Demonstrate Ethical and Professional Behavior. This is achieved through watching and interacting the employees at my field, and reviewing the NASW code of ethics. My current field placement has a supervisor, that monitors any ethical situations and/or ethical dilemmas. Garthwait, 2017 states that having a protocol or set of principles to use in this process is both necessary and invaluable. Ethical dilemmas are sure to arise, but as long as social workers are following the principles and practicing within their scope, harm to clients and self can be avoided. Reference: Gallina, N. (2010). Conflict between professional ethics and practice demands: Social workers' perceptions. Journal of Social Work Values and Ethics, 7(2), 1–9. Garthwait, C. L. (2017). Introduction to Service-Learning and Civic Engagement As we begin this journey together over the next eight weeks, it is imperative to understand the key concepts incorporated within the course, as well as the overall purpose of taking the course. As President John F. Kennedy has been quoted, “Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country.” Service-learning versus volunteering: Aren’t they one and the same? The correct answer is “no” as there are differences. Volunteering allows for activities which place the emphasis on the recipient. (Providing meals at the local homeless shelter places the emphasis on the recipient being fed for that particular meal.) Service-learning activities differ from volunteering in the INTENT involved. This intent with service-learning utilizes intellectual capacities which in turn address problems within the community. (There is a growing number of homeless individuals in the community – what activities can be performed to address this problem?) Following this example, we can see that service learning allows us to become an educated community member and problem-solver through serving and collaboratively reflecting on the meaning and purpose of the activities put into that service. The entire purpose of service-learning is therefore learning to grow in skills and knowledge because these assets are being brought to real-world problems. As we evaluate these skills, we need to have the understanding of civic capacity. This is knowing how to APPLY our knowledge and skills to the community challenges we are analyzing. This capacity is developed when we are able to look deeper at the connection between academic knowledge and experience. Putting each of these concepts together, service-learning, therefore impacts our community positively in order to address societal and political challenges, and generate the positive changes necessary for both individuals and within the system we are looking to change.Preview of Your Final Project Over the next few weeks we will be learning about service learning and investigating a community organization. You will begin to put this information together to evaluate the role of the community organization that you have chosen. You will support your ideas with the literature resources that you have found. You have three options in how you can present your final project: As a Paper Your paper should be creative and interesting, and demonstrate what you have learned. It should be a minimum of 5-7 pages in length and you will use APA style formatting with a title page and reference section. You should use Times New Roman, 12pt. font, double-space your lines, and set your page up with one inch margins (See the APA Template included in the Course Resources folder) As a Presentation Like the paper option, your presentation should be creative, interesting, and demonstrate what you have learned throughout the project. Your presentation should be 8 to 10 .

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO ORGANIZE FOR COMMUNITY CHANGE? WHY SHOULD YOU ENGAGE IN COMMUNITY ORGANIZATION? WHAT ARE EFFECTIVE STRATEGIES IN COMMUNITY ORGANIZATION? HOW DO YOU BRING ABOUT CHANGE THROUGH COMMUNITY ORGANIZATION? Throughout the Community Tool Box, our authors talk about different ways to improve our communities, and how to do all of the tasks, small and large, that make an organization work and work well. But broadly speaking -- how does all of this work? What are the overarching strategies that work to improve our communities? Why do some grassroots organizations fail, while others do great things and flourish? Throughout the Tool Box, we offer many suggestions of what we feel are "right" ways to approach community work, such as Our Model of Practice: Building Capacity for Community and System Change . Our belief in the equality of all people, for instance, or in the importance of individuals' efforts to improve their communities -- are not topics of specific sections, but make up the foundation of what we do. These beliefs and ideas are at the base of all of our work at the Community Tool Box. One such idea is that of community organization -- the idea that people can and should come together to talk about what matters to them, and then work together to successfully change their communities. As this idea is a common thread woven throughout our work, we'd like to use this chapter to make it explicit, and try to explore it more fully. So, then, on the following few screens (and in the next few sections) we'll do just that. In the remainder of this section, we'll give a general overview of community organization -- what it is and how you do it. We'll also give brief explanations of different ways of looking at community organization. Although all of the strategies we will discuss have quite a bit in common, it may be helpful to separate out and compare different approaches in order for us to look more clearly at our work. WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO ORGANIZE FOR COMMUNITY CHANGE? Community organizing is the process by which people come together to identify common problems or goals, mobilize resources, and, in other ways, develop and implement strategies for reaching the objectives they want to accomplish. As you can see, it's a big idea -- it's really a way of looking at all of the work that we do. Because of that, it encompasses many of the other ideas discussed in the Tool Box. For example, effective community organization will generally include: Gaining an understanding of the community. The first key step is learning what the community is like, and what is important to its residents. Generating and using power . There are many types of power; depending on the nature of your organization and your long term goals, your organization may have (or need) different types. Different kinds of power include: Political or legislative power -- for example, you could work to pass laws to make it more difficult for young people to get hold of alcohol.

A statement of the public entity for which the policy is intended. The beneficiaries of the policy. The human service outcome for social change. State which actors in the home community may play a constructive and active role to advance the policy process, and identify the actors or factors that may pose as obstacles to your proposed policy. State the key discussion points raised by your peers in support of or in opposition to your proposed policy. State your rationale for choosing the policy proposal. Assignment Requirements Summary Length: 750 words. Font and font size: Times New Roman, 12 point. Formatting: Present your paper in APA format. Your paper should include the following: A description of the community you selected A description of the key informants you would contact within that community An explanation of why you would contact the key informants you selected An explanation of the skills you might use to engage these informants to obtain the community details to complete your needs assessment and explain why you chose those skills. n this workshop, we will engage in open dialogue about the importance of drawing a line between a charity-centered approach to community service as opposed to a social-justice approach.

In this sermon Pastor Ryan Shannon introduces a new sermon series on the Book of Jude entitled, "The Acts of the Apostates". Apostates are the earliest "deconversion" stories of the New Testament. These are false teachers who rejected a truth that they once felt some affinity towards. They preached another gospel and posed a great danger to the early church. Like the first century, the 21st century church faces this same real risk. False teachers are often attractive, charismatic and incredibly positive in their message. But they reject the hard teachings of Jesus and offer a message that offers affirmation without correction. There is nothing sadder than someone who believes a lie and stakes their eternal destiny on that lie that our sin is something God winks at. In this series we will learn the importance of discernment coupled with a bold commitment to stand up, stand out and stand firm for the gospel.
