Paninis.
What would we do without it. Went in
there to talk to the boss. The new boss
that is. As you know Ollie bought out
Angelo one year ago. Ollie’s broad
Scottish accent betrays his origin in the
west of Scotland but as with his wife Vera,
Vera’s sister Milly and Angelo he is of
Italian descent.
In fact all their respective parents
emigrated to the UK from the same small
village Picinisco near Monte Cassino. It is
now about 14 years since Angelo opened
up Paninis transforming what was a small
and dusty English bakers shop, selling
bread and pies, into the pavement café
we all enjoy.
Italian they all may be but the menus on
the walls show a keen insight into the
dietary habits of the locals. Eggs fried
poached or omeletted, bacon, ham,
beans, toast and sandwiches (and
Paninis) of all sorts and sizes. Not a
Gnocchi in sight but the best Cappucinos
in town.
Behind the glass counter are the girls.
Did you know they are all graduates?
Aliona is from St Petersburg has an
Economics degree and one day will
probably be the first female President of
Russia. She heard about this job through
her Godmother. (That was Lucy who left
Paninis at Christmas).
Agnieszka, also known as Bluey (the
eyes) is from Lubin near Wroclaw in
Poland about 100kms from the German
border. She studied Child Psychology.
Justina graduated in Law and
Administration. Amazingly enough she
also comes from Lubin though she had
to travel from Poland to Hadley Wood

qualified teacher and is from Rumania.
So next time you order some food just
bear in mind that you are dealing with
some very smart young ladies. There are
enough brains here to run John Lewis.
Mind you, remembering all the complex
orders is not easy. ‘Cup of tea love two
sugars, one coffee no sugar, two eggs
fried and bacon for me please, he’ll have
the same but poached not fried. Soft for
me. toast, brown please with butter. I’ll
have a few tomatoes as well. Oh and
ketchup. Thanks love. We’re over there’.
All managed calmly efficiently and
quickly. Keep it going Ollie and team.

HWA Car park.
For those of you not familiar with the
Hadley Wood Association Car Park it is
the parking area just past the Tennis
Courts in Crescent East. It is really for the
use of staff and other users of the Hadley
Wood Association.
However over the past few years it has
become clear that it is a useful parking
area for parents taking their children to
the Hadley Wood Primary school. The
Association has permitted this facility free
of charge on the basis that it is a help to
local parents.
Two problems have resulted from our
neighbourly attitude. Commuters have
started using the drive down to the car
park parking with two wheels on the
verge and thus converting the two way
access road to one way. No amount of
notices on these cars has stopped this
practice which has caused extensive
damage to the verge and endless
irritation to users. The other problem is
that heavy use of the car park has caused
its rapid disintegration only five years
after it was last resurfaced.
The Association under Graham Sharp
the Chairman has thus had to raise
£45,000, a big sum for what is basically a
village hall. Happily we have received a
grant of £10,000 from the Enfield Council
(please see the letter from Paul
McCannah) which has been a major help
and for which we are very very grateful.
Work will start in August during which
time the car park will be closed. Two
important issues remain.
How do we prevent commuters leaving
their cars there all day and how can we
make some modest charge to car
park users to fund the inevitable repairs
in about 10 years time? These issues
are under discussion at the moment
and we would welcome any sensible
suggestions.
Parking at the shops in
Crescent West.
It is clear that the current parking system
outside our shopping parade is not
helpful to retailers or customers. The
petition asking Enfield for help with a new
system collected 400 names and
addresses and was delivered to the
Council on July 17th.
Since then we have received their reply
stating that they received the petition and
will now endeavour to secure funding to
progress the surveys and consultations
necessary to introduce Pay and Display
at the shops. They point out that
obtaining the views of all concerned and
then designing the best possible scheme
is a lengthy and expensive process.
They also mention that the Council has
no free period in any of its on-street Pay
and Display areas and that currently
approved charges range from 30p for 15
mins to £2.40 for up to 2 hours. This
seems a positive and realistic response
from the Council and we look forward to
the consultation process.

Conversations with
Tom Adams. WW2 pilot
How often do you find yourself talking to
a humorous 91 year old who has flown
Tiger Moths, Hurricanes and Spitfires?
Rarely? Quite. I went to see him. Shirley
his wife of 60 years, sits by calmly
passing out the tea and cakes and
makes the (very) occasional correction.
Tom lived in Beech Hill Avenue, Hadley
Wood as a young man, eventually
leaving school and starting to train as a
surveyor in Fleet St. Salary £1 a week.
Then the war started. After a short spell in
the Home Guard (based in the Hadley
Wood Golf Club) he cleared his desk and
aged 19 years set off to join the RAF.
With 50 other hopefuls on August 18th
1941 he was summoned to Lord’s
cricket ground to experience the
traditional Medical Examination. (In those
days this involved sticking ones tongue
out and dropping one’s trousers). There

can’t be many people who can boast of
that experience in the hallowed Long
Room at Lords. He was then billeted
near the Zoo ‘rather appropriately” says
Tom, at the Air Crew Receiving Centre.
ACRC known to all and sundry as Arsy
Tarsy. At this stage of the war, America in
general and General Arnold in particular
had offered the British government
training programmes in America for
pilots. Preliminary training in the UK was
set up and Tom, amongst others, was
chosen. This meant going for basic
training at St Andrews in Scotland. “First
I was at the home of cricket and then the
home of golf” said Tom. “I did try playing
golf on the Old Course but golf balls
were five shillings each and I only had
three. Had to give up after three holes as
I had lost them all!” Whilst there they
were all given various injections and
vaccinations. One day they were being
marched about the parade ground ( at
40 paces/min) by a regular RAF corporal.
They had to shout out their numbers.
“Numbering off from the left” ordered
the Corporal. The squaddies responded.
ONE TWO THREE. The seventh chap
had a very high voice, SEVEN came out
in a penetrating falsetto. “ I thought you’d
been inoculated not castrated’ roared the
Corporal. Tom shakes with laughter
thinking about it.
Examinations were passed and Tom
was transferred to Wolverhampton for

actual flying training. Never having been
in an airplane in his life he started off in a
Tiger Moth with the instructor behind him.
Open cockpits and goggles. In January.
“Some of the lads who went on to fly over
Europe had never left their villages before
the war, never mind our shores”. Tom tells
me soberly. Seven hours in Tiger Moths
followed over the next three weeks and
he was deemed suitable for the American
course. Sailing to the USA in the Chateau
Thierry, Tom remembers the trip mainly
for being hungry.
Only two meals a day and no canteen.
Once there they were greeted by a large
Texan with a gun in his holster telling the
young Brits to do as they were told or
they would be shot.
“The Yanks had only been in the war for
three weeks at that stage and were
supposed to be on our side” says Tom
wryly. Eventually he reached Lakeland in
Florida to receive the promised training.
Three ten week courses in Stearman PT
17 biplanes learning to glide, deal with
mock engine failure and learning to get
out of spins (a deadly problem in those
early aeroplanes). The course lasted
nine months with 25% of the intake failing
the course. Not Tom. Next was Georgia
Alabama for experience in Harvard
Trainers alongside young American
trainees. The Americans had various
marching songs. ’Nothing can stop the
Army Air Corps’ they sang as they
marched. “Except the weather” sang the
Brits joyfully in response. Not that the
banter was one sided. How did you
navigate the planes I ask. “Just visually”
replies Tom. “The Mississipi was a useful
landmark” One evening off a week for
socializing.
Down in that part of America there was
much poverty especially among the black
community. Blacks had a low profile and
it was only in the last year of the war that
they started coming through as flyers.
“Hard to imagine or understand now”
says Tom “But that’s how it was in those
days” Tom passed everything including a
gunnery course and in 1942 was
commissioned as a Pilot Officer.
Anxious to see some action he was
disappointed to be sent as an instructor
to Greenville to teach new batches of
trainees in Vultee Valiants. “We called ‘em
Vultee Vibrators” chuckles Tom. Finally he
was sent back to the UK on the Queen
Elizabeth. Unescorted. This caused a
certain amount of consternation as U
boats were sinking a lot of Allied shipping
at that time.
All went well however and he was sent
to a centre near Shrewsbury on a final
training course before joining an RAF
squadron. Then to Egypt and Palestine
on the Capetown Castle and eventually
Poona for a course on liaison with the
Army, low level flying and jungle survival.
Finally he was moved to Burma where
he and the rest of his squadron flying
mostly Hurricanes were to harry the
retreating Japanese. “The Hurricanes
were fairly old and battered” grins Tom.
“We flew from Meiktelah south of
Mandalay”.
Their job was to support Allied troops
on the ground, identifying enemy
positions and photographing their
whereabouts. They were often rewarded
with bullet holes through their fuselages.
“What about parachute training?” I ask.
“No parachutes” says Tom. “Too close to
the trees. You really did not want to go
down in the jungle anyway. The Japs did
not like us. They took no prisoners”.
Tom’s squadron flew in pairs along the

6. the war was over. KL for a year then back
home.
Life changed. Living in Beech Hill
Avenue, tennis at the Hadley Wood Lawn
Tennis Club, golf at Hadley Wood Golf
Club, accountancy in Moorgate. In 1953
Tom married Shirley. They met at a party
in Camlet Way and celebrated their
Diamond wedding last month. I leave him
laughing and cheerful as always. “Come
back and see me soon” he says.

Older Women’s
co-housing
I posted information early this year on an
exciting pioneer development for those
interested in planning for later years. This
is the Older Women’s Cohousing
Community in Union St. High Barnet.
It will be the first community of its kind
in the country-that is run for and by an
older group of individuals signed up to be
neighbourly. Barnet granted planning
permission for this in April.
Now as tender documents are
prepared for the necessary demolition
and construction process we as a group
are looking for additional members-those
who can buy and those who are eligible
to rent.
Two thirds of the flats will be for
purchase and a third will be rented on
housing association terms.
All the flats will have balconies or patios
and are a reasonable size. We will have a
common room and guest room and will
share a large garden and vegetable
patch which we intend to work between
us. Completion of the project is set for
sometime in 2015.
Meanwhile we are recruiting. We have
held an information drop-in in June with
plans and a 3 dimensional model. You

Bonfire and Fireworks
Night 2013
After considerable thought and
discussion, it is with regret that we have
to announce that the Hadley Wood
Association will not be hosting Fireworks
night this year.
This decision has not been taken lightly
as we know how many of you in our
community enjoy this event and have
attended for many years.
There are two principal reasons for this
decision: First, as I know you will
appreciate, the administrative burden
in organising this event is considerable

long valleys lined by hills. They had to
keep beneath the cloud canopy in order
to see where they were and to observe
enemy activity. “Worst moment?” I ask. “It
was quite difficult to judge when to pull
up at the end of the valley” says Tom. “On
one occasion I had to pull up the plane
very steeply when the auxiliary fuel tank
which was in use was torn off. The engine
stalled immediately. Not a good
moment”.
That was Friday 13th July three weeks
before the war ended. He shows me his
Log book. One laconic report describes a
flight in a Spitfire. ‘Oil on windscreen
during inverted flight’ You wonder at the
skill of these young men keeping those
patched up planes in the air. Eventually
As you will all be aware, our Primary
school is quite little compared to most,
so you can imagine our excitement
when, on Thursday 4th July a group of
Year 4 children from Hadley Wood
School represented Enfield in the
Balfour Beatty sponsored London
Youth Games, which were held at
Crystal Palace National Sports Centre.
The London borough of Enfield was
one of 32 London boroughs who
participated in the games. We won our
right to represent our authority by
winning the All Enfield tournament
earlier in the term.
We are especially grateful to Chris
Hepworth from the Hadley Wood
Tennis Association and to the
Association themselves who allow our
classes to use the courts for their
lessons. It is obviously working very
well!
The Games began with a ‘round
robin’ box league tournament. Hadley
Wood played Fox Primary from the
borough of Kensington and
Westminster, New End Primary from
Camden and Birkbeck Primary from
Bexley. Hadley Wood successfully won
through to the next round and were
only finally defeated in the semi-finals.
Congratulations to Jasper Wax,
Reanne Gardner, Thadeus Hays and
Tallulah Miel who all played brilliantly
and showed great sportsmanship.
This was a fantastic opportunity for the
children and a truly memorable day for
all those who took part. Well done,
Hadley Wood School!

7. Recipe Book in Memory

As many of you know Sue and I ran our
Creative Cookery lessons together for
over 20 years. We always planned to put

recipes and in fact started one about 10
years ago but it was never finished.

even though the Hadley Wood
Association and our volunteers have
always risen to the occasion. In recent
years, however, the Health and Safety
requirements have increased
considerably both in terms of workload
and cost.
We have to arrange numerous pre
event safety checks and ensure
adequate marshalling and medical
support on the night.
All of this adds to the cost and
resourcing. Second, membership levels
have fallen over recent years and as
result the Hadley Wood Association’s
income. Our ability to support a firework
evening has therefore become more
challenging.
We appreciate that this may come as a
disappointment to you. We have not
ruled out returning to hosting the event in
future years if we are able to address the
concerns mentioned above.
The Association is here for the
residents of Hadley Wood but we need
your support if we are to be able to
provide such events in the future.

residents Michael Gavin (40) son Conor
(13) and Michaels father Martin (68).
These three generations of the Gavin
family took part in the Josie Reddington
Foundation Charity Cycle in Ireland
counties Mayo Galway on Saturday
June 2013. Starting and ending at
Bohola the route included Castlebar,
Westport Ballinrobe Claremorris, Knock
and Kilmagh.
Both Michael and his father
undertook the 100 mile bike ride while
son Conor did the 13 mile ride.
Altogether they raised over £950 for this
Foundation. It was Michael Gavin and
his firm MPG Ltd that in 2011 were
responsible for a major voluntary
project at Hadley Wood Primary
School, including installing several
planters, clearing the pond area and
laying several tons of shingle.
This made a huge improvement to
the school surroundings. It was a most
generous and community minded
gesture which has been widely
appreciated by the children at the
school, their parents and the staff.

From Councillor Paul
McCannah.
My ward colleagues and I have recently
been pleased to support Hadley Wood
residents to secure funding from Enfield
Council for two important local projects.
Readers will be aware that the community
playground has recently been
transformed from a rather run-down and
unappealing facility into a modern,
attractive and accessible facility for local
residents and their children.
This is the result of the tireless work of
a number of local families who developed
the vision for the new playground and
raised very significant sums of money
towards the renovation.
As part of their fundraising efforts the
parents approached my ward colleagues
and I to see whether we could secure any
funding from Enfield Council.
We were pleased to work with them on
this and delighted to be able to secure
£20,000 towards the costs of the new
playground.
Last month, working in partnership with
the Hadley Wood Association, we
secured £10,000 towards the cost of
resurfacing the car park.
The original bid for this was actually
submitted in 2012 but there have been
some legal issues which slowed things
down considerably.
However, we eventually managed to
resolve these satisfactorily.
The playground and the car park are
well-used facilities that help to make
Hadley Wood an even better place to live
and we hope that residents will enjoy the
enhanced facilities.

Letter from America
I have just been catching up with the HW
news. I was particularly interested in the
article about the Proms, especially the
anecdote relating to Carl Orff''s Carmina
Burana (I hope I've spelt that correctly!) I
remember enjoying the TV production
immensely and was highly amused when
the local paper referred to it in their TV
guide as Carmina Miranda.
An exotic Brazilian singer and dancer
who was very popular at that time was
called Carmen Miranda.
I also recall that one passage of the
catchy music was used as background
music in an advert for Old Spice After
Shave.
And a joke went the rounds about a
man who took his dog into a pub and
asked the bartender if he would give him
a free drink if he could prove the dog
could talk. When he agreed he asked the
dog to name a choral composer and it
gave a husky growl of orff.
The bartender wasn't impressed and as
they left the dog looked up dejectedly
saying maybe I should have said
Shostakovich”. I have wasted enough of
your time with my remniscences !

The new owners are the William Pears
Group. They own the Spires and the
Market. They are being very friendly and
are including all our Community Groups
in discussions. When we meet them we
are collectively the Chipping Barnet Town
Centre Strategy Board.
All we can announce at the moment is
that the planning applications have been
approved though we do not yet have a
timescale for the Market work. WPG have
promised a Press Release soon. If
anyone wants to look at the Market plans
they are on the Barnet Planning website.

Football Club
Hadley Wood Wingate FC’s prep-
arations for the season of 2013/14 are
almost complete. New kits have been
ordered, training schedule has been
finalised, new coaches have joined and
registration to the Watford Friendly
League is almost complete. The
football club will have 15 teams with
players ranging from the age of 7 to 13.
We will continue to train at the Finchley
Rugby Club and have our home matches
at Hadley Wood (7 and 9 a side). Last
season was a tough one, the endless
cancellation of training and matches as a
result of the weather affecting everyone.
We do hope that next season will be
better.
As a precaution we will be reserving
Astroturf pitches to allow training
sessions to continue as planned. The
first official match of the season will
start on Sunday the 8th of September
(prior friendly matches are planned).

Dog Show
It is always a joy to see people from all
across our community flock to an event
on a sunny day, and even better when
they bring their dogs with them!
Especially compared to last year when
the rains poured incessantly from the
dark skies and threatened the whole
event. Nothing stops Barnet dog lovers
though, a true pedigree breed we are!
Monken Hadley Church of England
School held their Summer Fayre and
Dog Show on the 13th July in soaring
sunny temperatures on Monken Hadley
Common.
It was an event shared by the
parishoners of St. Mary’s Church who put
on a very tasty ‘Cream Tea’ for those of
us who prefer a cuppa to a cold Pimms.
This was to raise money for Church
Funds. There was a cooling bar, a sizzling
BBQ and lots of stalls and activities for
the many children.
The Ice Cream van had a perpetual
queue and the bouncy castle never
stopped bouncing. The parents and
Friends of Monken Hadley ran a large
variety of stalls from Teddy Tombola to
Bottle Tombola, and there was plenty of
fundraising for great charities such as
Ghana Link.
Lets not forget the dogs. They came in
all shapes and sizes, from a puppy in a
pink pushchair to shaggy rescue dogs
and perfectly presented pedigrees.
Every dog was a winner, with rosettes for
all and prizes for many.
The competition made us all sigh with
admiration and laugh out loud at the
hilarious doggy (and human) antics!
The event was to mainly to raise money
for the school. Sadly the need for extra
funding for the very basics within every
school is becoming more and more
necessary.

11. The Friends of Monken Hadley have
been raising money over the last couple
of years to provide much needed ICT
equipment and new playground
equipment.
The children have been enjoying new
ways of learning using online sites such a
Mathletics. Parents are also benefitting
from regular blogs produced by the
children, giving us an insight into their
days at school.
Our day on Monken Hadley Common
was a truly British Summer Festival,
enjoyed by all the community. Our
grateful thanks to the many people who
volunteered and made this possible, from
school, Church, our neighbours and
sponsors, and the Monken Hadley
Commoners of course; for everyone’s
kindness and good spirit.
Days like this are happy days, to be
enjoyed, savoured and remembered
fondly, until next year!

Race for Life
This years Race For Life was run by several Hadley Wood Residents – one
of our group came 4th
A great achievement in addition to the £1730 raised for Cancer
Research. Next year we are aiming to have a 100 strong team, raise over
£10,000 and have 5 runners in the top 10 finishers! www.hwrc.me.uk
