2 What’s Up
     • Habitat would like to thank Walt Ford and Susan Levanger for their generous and long term service. Ford has been the
home maintenance class instructor almost since the course was started and Levanger has been the Hammertime editor for
many years. They have both done an amazing job and we will miss them very much. Thank You!
     • Habitat would like to thank our amazing car donors and the cars they have lovingly donated to the local Habitat through
the years. Find out how you can donate an old vehicle today at www.habitatuc.org/habitat_car_donations.html.
     • Attention Soda Pop Drinkers! Recycle your “cans into keys” and help Habitat provide safe and affordable housing for
families in need in our community. Details and drop off locations at www.habitatuc.org/donate/gogreen.html.
     • Join our Cloud! Habitat for Humanity of Utah County has adopted a new texting platform called txtCloud that will allow our
local Habitat affiliate to keep you up to date on what is happening at the organization - including volunteer opportunities,
events, ReStore inventory arrivals, and much more! You will also be able to receive relevant offers and information from
approved community partners, helping the organization raise much needed funding for its local affordable housing mission.
We receive two cents from every text that is sent to you.
We would like to invite you to join Habitat’s Cloud. Using your phone, text UCHabitat to CLOUD or 25683. You will be
asked three questions - your zip code, your gender and the year you were born. You are now ready to keep up to date with
what is happening at your local Habitat affiliate and receive relevant offers and information from approved community part-
ners. We know your phone is sacred space. Spam is not allowed and you will not receive more than three text messages
daily. Check it out and see how it works - you may opt out anytime!
     • Check out Habitat’s FUNSAVER Site! Habitat for Humanity has partnered with VP Deals to get all the latest bargains on
local products/venues. Check out this week’s FUNSAVER specials at www.habitatucdeals.info. A portion of your “fun” pur-

     • Have you tested your home for radon yet? – Habitat is working with the Utah Cancer Action Network, Utah County
Health Department, and the Utah Department a Environmental Quality to encourage community members to test their
homes for radon. Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer, causing an estimated 22,000 deaths of year in the
United States. Habitat offers test kits at the Orem ReStore or online for just $6.00! Learn more at
          www.habitatuc.org/radon_awareness.html.
     • Need tools for your upcoming spring cleaning projects? Stop by Habitat for Humanity of Utah County’s tool lending
library and “check out” needed tools and lawn care items for free. The lending library, located inside the Habitat ReStore at
340 South Orem Blvd., Orem, is open Monday through Saturday from 10-6. An application and proof of residency are re-
quired. Look online at www.habitatuc.org for more information.
     • Save Money for Home Repairs and Maintenance – A new home maintenance fund has been established to help Habitat
homeowners save for future home repairs and maintenance. Homeowners now can pay a little extra ($10.00 or more) with
their monthly mortgage payment. The extra amount will be saved in an escrow like account and can be accessed for home
repairs and maintenance. To sign up or for more information, contact Kena at (801) 344-8527 or kena@habitatuc.org.

Home Maintenance Tips (March 2013 Marketwatch Newsletter)
How to Make Your Water Heater Last for Decades
The single most important thing whether your water heater lasts or dies prematurely is water heater maintenance and the
most important maintenance on your water heater is the “Anode Rod.” This rod protects your water heater from rust and cor-
rosion. It is recommended by professional plumbers that you have your Anode rod inspected every two years or have it re-
placed regularly every three to four years, depending on city water conditions and if you have a water softener or not. Once
the rod is depleted, the tank will start to corrode, and will ultimately cause your tank to leak. At this point, the water heater will

      up and energy loss.

                 SAVE ENERGY! (http://www.we-energies.com/)
                 Office
                 • Purchase efficient equipment. Look for Energy Star office equipment, such as computers, printers and fax
machines. They use less energy than standard office equipment.
                 • Don’t let the computer run all day. Only power on the computer, monitor, printer and fax machine when you
need them. Don’t leave them on after you’re finished working. Computers and other office equipment still use
                  energy in sleep mode.

Be Careful With Kids Around Water at Home
Water hazards can be found throughout just about any home, but parents can take a few precautions to help protect children
       from water-related injuries at home.
The Safekids.org website shares these safety guidelines for parents regarding water safety at home:
       • Always close the doors to laundry rooms and bathrooms.
       • Never keep water in large 5-gallon buckets at home; always empty them out, turn them upside down and store them out
            of reach of children.
       • Make sure that toilet lids are always closed and use toilet-seat locks.
       • Always completely drain the bathtub as soon as bath time is over.

       SAVING STRATEGIES (The Simple Dollar)

365 Ways to Live Cheap – Share Your Experience and Frugal Tips

It’s easy to find a long list of frugal tactics that work for a general audience.

You read through them, discard the majority of them that don’t apply to your life, and find the handful that is actually useful to
       you.
Wouldn’t it be nice if you had a personal frugal assistant who did this filtering for you, leaving you with just a few tips that actu-
ally made a big difference in your life?
You actually do already have this. It’s called your social network.
Your friends know where you live. They know where you work. They know what you enjoy doing. They know the things that you
like. You know the same things about them.
If there’s someone out there who’s going to be able to find a frugal tip that’s going to work for you and not bug you with some-
       thing useless, it’s a friend.

So, how do you get this trend started? You do it by sharing first.

Whenever you hear a frugal tip that seems like it would sync really well in the life of one of your friends, remember it and share
it. Tell that friend about the tip. Facebook is a perfect avenue for this kind of thing.

Don’t over share. Stick to the frugal tactics that you are sure will be genuinely useful and new to the person you’re sending the
tip to. Look for ones that really solve problems in their life, particularly ones that can be executed with minimal effort.

What you’ll find is that your friends will eventually begin sharing with you. They’ll look for tips that perfectly match your
situation and share them. Some of them you will have heard, of course, but when you get a tactic that just fits your life to a tee, it
       can be a tremendous help.

Even better, this type of exchange is a form of “money buddy,” which means you’re mutually encouraging each other to
remain frugal. A person who pops up every once in a while with a frugal tactic encourages you to keep thinking about it, not
just as a money-saving and life-enhancing methodology, but as a social one, too.

       Share, and share alike.

BE GOOD TO YOUR HEALTH (Total Fitness/Select Health)
             Quick Tips for Heart-Smart Cooking
To take good care of your heart, make sure you play it smart in the kitchen. Preparing and eating low-cholesterol,
low-fat meals can help you reduce your blood cholesterol level. By lowering your cholesterol, you can reduce your
chances of having a heart attack or stroke. The best way to keep cholesterol in check is to avoid foods high in satu-
rated and trans fat, which your body converts into cholesterol. Check food labels to avoid high-fat items. The
American Heart Association offers these tips for low cholesterol cooking:
             Meats
                  • Select lean cuts of meat, and trim off all visible fat before cooking.
                  • Broil rather than fry meats.
                  • Use a rack to drain off fat with broiling, roasting, or baking.
                  • Make gravies after the fat has hardened and can be removed from the liquid.
             Vegetables
                  • Include vegetables with every meal.
                  • Use liquid vegetable oils or margarines to cook vegetables, brown meats, and make pancakes and
                           waffles.
             Cooking
                  • Serve moderate portions.
                  • Try dishes where meat is not the primary ingredient.
                  • Replace foods high in saturated fats, such as butter, with liquid vegetable oil or soft margarine.
                  • Cook in a way that requires little or no fat.

  • 2. 2 What’s Up • Habitat would like to thank Walt Ford and Susan Levanger for their generous and long term service. Ford has been the home maintenance class instructor almost since the course was started and Levanger has been the Hammertime editor for many years. They have both done an amazing job and we will miss them very much. Thank You! • Habitat would like to thank our amazing car donors and the cars they have lovingly donated to the local Habitat through the years. Find out how you can donate an old vehicle today at www.habitatuc.org/habitat_car_donations.html. • Attention Soda Pop Drinkers! Recycle your “cans into keys” and help Habitat provide safe and affordable housing for families in need in our community. Details and drop off locations at www.habitatuc.org/donate/gogreen.html. • Join our Cloud! Habitat for Humanity of Utah County has adopted a new texting platform called txtCloud that will allow our local Habitat affiliate to keep you up to date on what is happening at the organization - including volunteer opportunities, events, ReStore inventory arrivals, and much more! You will also be able to receive relevant offers and information from approved community partners, helping the organization raise much needed funding for its local affordable housing mission. We receive two cents from every text that is sent to you. We would like to invite you to join Habitat’s Cloud. Using your phone, text UCHabitat to CLOUD or 25683. You will be asked three questions - your zip code, your gender and the year you were born. You are now ready to keep up to date with what is happening at your local Habitat affiliate and receive relevant offers and information from approved community part- ners. We know your phone is sacred space. Spam is not allowed and you will not receive more than three text messages daily. Check it out and see how it works - you may opt out anytime! • Check out Habitat’s FUNSAVER Site! Habitat for Humanity has partnered with VP Deals to get all the latest bargains on local products/venues. Check out this week’s FUNSAVER specials at www.habitatucdeals.info. Learn more at www.habitatuc.org/radon_awareness.html. • Need tools for your upcoming spring cleaning projects? Look online for upcoming classes at www.centralutahgardens.org/classes_events_concerts.aspx Home Maintenance Tips (March 2013 Marketwatch Newsletter) How to Make Your Water Heater Last for Decades The single most important thing whether your water heater lasts or dies prematurely is water heater maintenance and the most important maintenance on your water heater is the “Anode Rod.” This rod protects your water heater from rust and cor- rosion. It is recommended by professional plumbers that you have your Anode rod inspected every two years or have it re- placed regularly every three to four years, depending on city water conditions and if you have a water softener or not. Once the rod is depleted, the tank will start to corrode, and will ultimately cause your tank to leak. At this point, the water heater will need to be replaced. It is also recommended that you flush the tank one to two times per year to help reduce sediment build- up and energy loss. Make Your House a Healthy Home & More Environmentally-Friendly Too! (EPA) Compost organic matter such as food and yard wastes to be used in gardens and landscaping. SAVE ENERGY! (http://www.we-energies.com/) Office • Purchase efficient equipment. Look for Energy Star office equipment, such as computers, printers and fax machines. They use less energy than standard office equipment. • Don’t let the computer run all day. Only power on the computer, monitor, printer and fax machine when you need them. Don’t leave them on after you’re finished working. Computers and other office equipment still use energy in sleep mode. BE CAREFUL (MSN Health Living) Be Careful With Kids Around Water at Home Water hazards can be found throughout just about any home, but parents can take a few precautions to help protect children from water-related injuries at home. The Safekids.org website shares these safety guidelines for parents regarding water safety at home: • Always close the doors to laundry rooms and bathrooms. • Never keep water in large 5-gallon buckets at home; always empty them out, turn them upside down and store them out of reach of children. • Make sure that toilet lids are always closed and use toilet-seat locks. • Always completely drain the bathtub as soon as bath time is over. 4
  • 5. 5 SAVE STRATEGIES (The Simple Dollar)) SAVING STRATEGIES (The Simple Dollar) 365 Ways to Live Cheap – Share Your Experience and Frugal Tips It’s easy to find a long list of frugal tactics that work for a general audience. You read through them, discard the majority of them that don’t apply to your life, and find the handful that is actually useful to you. Wouldn’t it be nice if you had a personal frugal assistant who did this filtering for you, leaving you with just a few tips that actu- ally made a big difference in your life? You actually do already have this. It’s called your social network. Your friends know where you live. They know where you work. They know what you enjoy doing. They know the things that you like. You know the same things about them. If there’s someone out there who’s going to be able to find a frugal tip that’s going to work for you and not bug you with some- thing useless, it’s a friend. So, how do you get this trend started? You do it by sharing first. Whenever you hear a frugal tip that seems like it would sync really well in the life of one of your friends, remember it and share it. Tell that friend about the tip. Facebook is a perfect avenue for this kind of thing. Don’t over share. Stick to the frugal tactics that you are sure will be genuinely useful and new to the person you’re sending the tip to. Look for ones that really solve problems in their life, particularly ones that can be executed with minimal effort. What you’ll find is that your friends will eventually begin sharing with you. They’ll look for tips that perfectly match your situation and share them. Some of them you will have heard, of course, but when you get a tactic that just fits your life to a tee, it can be a tremendous help. Even better, this type of exchange is a form of “money buddy,” which means you’re mutually encouraging each other to remain frugal. A person who pops up every once in a while with a frugal tactic encourages you to keep thinking about it, not just as a money-saving and life-enhancing methodology, but as a social one, too. Share, and share alike. BENEFITS OF HOMEOWNERSHIP Stable, affordable housing may REDUCE THE FREQUENCY OF UNWANTED MOVES that lead children to experience disruptions in home life or educational in- struction. RESOURCES Have your taxes prepared for free! VITA is United Way of Utah County’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program. Anyone in Utah, Summit or Wasatch Counties with an income of $51,000 or below may be eligible to have their taxes prepared and filed for free by trained volunteers. Local volunteers are IRS certified and look for specific tax credits like the Earned Income Tax Credit. Volunteers help participants receive the best refund possible. United Way of Utah County’s VITA program is a part of a coalition with other nationwide financial institutions, nonprofit and government agencies and the “Earn It! Keep It! Save It!” program. Appointments are necessary and fill up quickly, please schedule as early as possible. Now through April 15, dial 2-1-1 to make an appointment or to find out more information about VITA. BE GOOD TO YOUR HEALTH (Total Fitness/Select Health) Quick Tips for Heart-Smart Cooking To take good care of your heart, make sure you play it smart in the kitchen. Preparing and eating low-cholesterol, low-fat meals can help you reduce your blood cholesterol level. By lowering your cholesterol, you can reduce your chances of having a heart attack or stroke. The best way to keep cholesterol in check is to avoid foods high in satu- rated and trans fat, which your body converts into cholesterol. Check food labels to avoid high-fat items. The American Heart Association offers these tips for low cholesterol cooking: Meats • Select lean cuts of meat, and trim off all visible fat before cooking. • Broil rather than fry meats. • Use a rack to drain off fat with broiling, roasting, or baking. • Make gravies after the fat has hardened and can be removed from the liquid. Vegetables • Include vegetables with every meal. • Use liquid vegetable oils or margarines to cook vegetables, brown meats, and make pancakes and waffles. Cooking • Serve moderate portions. • Try dishes where meat is not the primary ingredient. • Replace foods high in saturated fats, such as butter, with liquid vegetable oil or soft margarine. • Cook in a way that requires little or no fat. 6
