6. Short Papers / Notes
• 4 ACM 2-column pages vs 10 for full papers
• Tech Notes category in UbiComp 2001-03
• New: Papers + Notes judged by the same PC
and at the same PC meeting
• Interspersed in proceedings with full papers
• Referenced simply as “In Proceedings of
UbiComp 2008”
• Presented as a shorter presentation in main track
• Benefit: increase # of papers in single track
7. ACM Press vs. Springer
• Springer proceedings have been removed from the
“SCI list” (rating system for Korea, Japan, etc.)
– Using Springer may be detrimental to local submission
and participation
• UbiComp 2008 will be in-cooperation with the ACM
(SIGMOBILE accepted; SIGCHI, SIGWEB,
SIGSOFT pending)
– UbiComps in the past have had in-cooperation status
• Proceedings will be published by ACM Press
• No financial tie to ACM other than for proceedings
production (finances managed by Sungkyunkwan
University) … for 2008
8. Electronic and/or Paper?
Motivation to move to electronic proceedings:
• Reduce lead time from >6 months to 3 months
• Get research in front of the community more
quickly
• Promote UbiComp’s active, dynamic atmosphere
Potential Changes:
• Electronic version [only] at conference
• Paper version available some weeks later
• Move deadline from March/April to June (?)
9. Venue Proliferation
• HotMobile
– 9th ACM Workshop on Mobile Systems and Applications
– Napa, CA, 26-27 February 2008
• IEEE PerCom
– 6th Int’l Conf. on Pervasive Computing and Communications
– Hong Kong, 17-18 March 2008
• Pervasive
– 6th Int’l Conf. on Pervasive Computing
– Sydney, 19-22 May 2008
• MobiSys
– 6th ACM/USENIX Conf. on Mobile Sys., Apps. and Services
– Breckenridge, CO, 10-13 June 2008
• Mobiquitous

– Philadelphia, PA, 6-10 August 2007
• LoCA

• UbiComp
– 10th Int’l Conf. on Ubiquitous Computing
– Seoul, 21-24 September 2008
10. Affiliation
• We can reconsider requesting ACM sponsorship in 2009
• “ACM UbiComp” only if sponsored, “UbiComp” otherwise
• SIG(s) must financially underwrite the conference to be
ACM sponsored, separate finances for in-cooperation
– Removal of financial risk currently taken on by local organisation
– 18% fee added to expenses by ACM, covering admin services etc
• Proceedings can be published by the ACM if in-
cooperation with at least one SIG
• There exist other conferences which maintain independent
steering committees and identities, yet are ACM-
sponsored, typically by >1 SIG
– MobileHCI, DUX, CSCW, UIST
– SIGMOBILE exec has indicated support for this approach
