Building a Better Grants Strategy Post-COVID

RSD4 summit at the Banff Centre Redesigning the charitable sector to answer the following system questions at micro and macro levels: - What would society look like of a charity X didn't exist? - What would the cost to a community be? - Can this be measured? - What would it look like if everyone had access to all the informaiton about the charities they were supporting? What info is relevant and what is noise? - Could we reduce the duplication in the marketplace? Could we create a marketplace? - Can charity data support urban planning and smart cities? Can we use this info to predict the next social issue far enough in advance that policy makers and solution creators have enough time to manage the issue? - Should we restructure the way that we incentivize donors beyond the charitable tax receipt and what about for-profit social impact investors, is there a way to incentivize their early-stage investments to encourage a social marketplace? - Can we change a funding model from financing problems to rewarding executives and managers for coming up with solutions that push the needle on issues?

Ministries and their consultants have invested heavily over the past decade or more in message development for fundraising appeals and in testing mail and e-mail concepts to determine which are likely to yield the greatest returns in each specific appeal transaction. While this has been successful, in the most recent economic downturn many ministries struggled to maintain levels of support even with well-tested appeals. Our work on behalf of several of these ministries suggests that one reason for this decline in support is that they had cultivated a group of donors who were characterized by high levels of transactional response but low levels of overall engagement with the ministry. In this analysis we explore patterns of engagement that we commonly see between donors and our ministry clients and share new tools for building and monitoring effective and sustainable engagement.

Loosely based on the quarterly earnings calls held by publicly owned companies, GuideStar's Impact Calls are the first steps in addressing new definitions of transparency: Timely—Impact Calls are held fewer than 60 days after the quarter's or year's end. Interactive—Impact Calls are meaningful discussions about what our results really mean. Participants have an opportunity to have questions answered in real time. Inclusive—Everyone is invited to our Impact Call. Comprehensive—Although we report on finances during our Impact Calls, we also address programmatic and operational metrics as well as our strategy. Finances are only one piece of a much larger picture when it comes to nonprofit impact. Our goal is not simply to report our results but to jump-start the sector’s conversation on how transparency is defined and conveyed across the sector.
