The connotations of REPLAY attracts the audience with its relation to music, the idea of replaying the readers favourite music over and over, and also the magazine is replaying the best music news for the reader. Also the repetition of the red at the start of the title and again at the end, can also be associated with the word REPLAY. Evaluation – Question 1. The use of eye contact draws the audience, the direct contact of the eyes make the readers feel more involved with the magazine, and the personal relationship between the reader and the cover star becomes stronger. The use of the Gutenberg Diagram draws the readers eye straight to from the title at the top down to the bottom of the page. These two areas are the strongest areas in the eye line of the reader, which means key words that the magazine wants to stand out should be placed in these areas to fully impact the reader. The left bottom hand corner is the weakest corner of the magazine, making it the most common place for such things as the barcode and price. The use of the active white space around the elements of the page suggests motion and activity, making the cover appear alive, and therefore attracts the audience. The use of consistent text throughout the front page creates familiarity with the reader and also makes the cover appear professional. The use of consistent colour, the red, black and white also creates themes and familiarity for the readers. The offset position of the main cover image, makes the right hand side of the page off balanced with the left. The heavier image on the right draws the audience attention straight to the image. This helps the magazine to attract audiences in as the cover artists somewhat helps to sell the magazine more successfully. The use of emphasis words such as ‘now’ and ‘many more’ shows the audience that there is something within this magazine that’s not expected, something special. The emphasis on these certain words help the audience to be drawn in. They create points of interest.
The use of columns within the article makes the page well presented and neat for the reader to understand. Also the quotes from the article draws the attention of the reader in. The use of the different colours of text also makes the article appear well organised and more appealing to the reader. The contents is organised into sections of the magazine, with page numbers in order of appearance, which makes it easier for the reader to find what they want quicker and easier. Also it makes the page seem well presented and organised. Again the eye contact of the main image draws the audience in, and makes the reader feel more intense about the article. The continued font from the front cover gives the reader familiarity and gives the magazine a continuous look that’s associated with it. The editors letter is a tool used for the magazine to address the reader personally, and inform the readers of what they’ve done to make the magazine better for them.
Evaluation – Question 2. The target audience for my magazine is young adults aged 15 +. My magazine is targeted for the less stereotypical image of youth, and represents those who are interested in the more indie and edgier side of music and culture. This is represented through the magazine with the use of such colours repeated such as red and black. Instead of using primary, younger colours such as a blues, pinks, yellows, the magazine is automatically represented to an older more sophisticated audience, but also not to mainstream, which the magazine is targeted at and created for. Evaluation – Question 3 Since my magazine is based on the style of Q magazine, the distribution company for this genre of magazine would be best for my magazine. The company know where the best places for the distribution of this magazine, and where the sales will be best. Using established distribution companies is useful when establishing a new magazine as they know where the best places, such as news agents, supermarkets and how to market the magazine successfully through the media and also the internet. The distributors in this case are Seymour.
Evaluation – Question 4. My magazine is targeted at a typical demographic for a modern day music magazine. The magazine main focus is first and foremost, music, artists, events such as gigs and festivals and the latest music news. To find out the typical conventions that readers expect from magazines, I created a questionnaire asking about their preferences, styles and how they would like to be represented throughout the magazine. Using my product research I found out that the typical audience for this genre of magazine prefer artists such as Oasis and Matalica compared to such artists as Madonna. This represents the less conventional type of audience that the magazine is representing. Also, when asked what sort of articles the readers would prefer, such things as Upcoming Coming Music Events news is more popular than interviews and general music information. The research helped a great deal in choosing the style of magazine and how the magazine would appear to the audience. Evaluation – Question 5. To attract the audience I used simple generic conventions to draw the audience’s attention. The image used, and the way the cover star is styled, represents the genre of the magazine. This particular imagery helps to draw the audience in as they can relate to the image on the front especially particular styles and people. The use of consistent text font keep the style consistent and recognisable to the audience. Throughout the magazine the style and presentation of the audience is kept the same, making the audience become familiar with the magazine. However, the font is stylised to represent the serious yet fun side of the genre.
The font has an impact on the reader, without being forceful to the audience. The type of linguistics used are there to grab the attention of the reader, words such as ‘latest’ attract the reader as they are keen for the most up to date music available to them at the time. The article uses quite formal language throughout, making the interview factual for the reader, which gave them an insight into the artists life. However, the language was not to complicated for the audience to understand and comprehend. Evaluation – Question 6. During the process of constructing the magazine the use of Photoshop was vital for the making of the magazine. Therefore, I learnt how to manipulate certain images to achieve a certain style for the magazine. Original Image. Edited Image. The use of lighting images makes them appear more appealing to the audience as it stands out more. Also the removal of blemishes, darkening areas to accent them, and also the smudge tool makes the hair and skin appear more natural, and untouched.
Any images used have a huge impact on the way the readers view the magazine. The eye contact of the model also draws the audience in and with the slight lean forward of the positioning of the cover star, draws the audience in. The use of black and white photographs also has an impact on the audience has it attracts the attention of the audience, and also makes the image appear older than it actually is, also having a certain impact on the audience, as old fashioned aspects is not generic in a modern music magazine. Evaluation – Question 7. The use of a practice Ancillary Project helped to establish what conventions works, and what conventions had to be handled in certain ways. The topic, a college magazine, also gave a chance to work with the Photoshop techniques that were to be used for the final draft. The media aspects were put into action such as the Gutenburg diagram. The front cover of my college magazine was a simple layout with features typical of a college magazine. The use of effects such as colour, and shadows helped me find out that certain aspects draw more attention than others.
