A Guide to
Commencement

 May 15–17, 2009
Office of the President

To our 2009 graduates, families, and friends:
On behalf of all of us at The George Washington University, I offer congratulations
to our graduating students and welcome everyone to our Commencement
Weekend. In a variety of events and activities May 15–17, the University will pay
tribute to the academic and personal achievements of our graduates.
In separate ceremonies during the weekend, each school will host a celebration
that recognizes these achievements. Our all-university Commencement will
take place on Sunday, May 17, at 10:00 a.m. on the National Mall between the
United States Capitol and the Washington Monument (between Fourth and
Seventh streets).
Every effort has been made to ensure that we will be able to conduct
Commencement on the National Mall. At the same time, we have also carefully
planned for an alternative venue if situations beyond our control prevent us
from being on the Mall. This booklet will provide you with the information you
need for a successful and enjoyable Commencement Weekend, including details
regarding the alternative site and emergency information.
Commencement is the capstone of a student’s journey. It is also a tribute to the
many years of indispensable support and guidance each student has received
from family, friends, and teachers, beginning long before his or her arrival at GW.
I wish you all a weekend filled with pride and joy in successes achieved and
those to come.

Sincerely,

Steven Knapp
President

  • 1. A Guide to Commencement May 15–17, 2009
  • 2. Office of the President To our 2009 graduates, families, and friends: On behalf of all of us at The George Washington University, I offer congratulations to our graduating students and welcome everyone to our Commencement Weekend. In a variety of events and activities May 15–17, the University will pay tribute to the academic and personal achievements of our graduates. In separate ceremonies during the weekend, each school will host a celebration that recognizes these achievements. Our all-university Commencement will take place on Sunday, May 17, at 10:00 a.m. on the National Mall between the United States Capitol and the Washington Monument (between Fourth and Seventh streets). Every effort has been made to ensure that we will be able to conduct Commencement on the National Mall. At the same time, we have also carefully planned for an alternative venue if situations beyond our control prevent us from being on the Mall. This booklet will provide you with the information you need for a successful and enjoyable Commencement Weekend, including details regarding the alternative site and emergency information. Commencement is the capstone of a student’s journey. It is also a tribute to the many years of indispensable support and guidance each student has received from family, friends, and teachers, beginning long before his or her arrival at GW. I wish you all a weekend filled with pride and joy in successes achieved and those to come. Sincerely, Steven Knapp President
